I think this song represents the multiple stages of life, hence “Merry Go Round of Life”. So when the music gets more slow at the end it symbolizes death and the old age, but in the start it’s all happy, so like being a child. You know what I mean?
But that would be a linear path, not a circle. The way I interpret the song is that it represents the constant cycle of happiness and melancholy that characterises life. The song sometimes gets slow and thoughtful to rise up once more a little later, showing that after low points in life, things eventually get better again.
My mom hired a pianist to play this song for my grandpa's funeral. I don't think my grandpa knows anything about the movie or anything about Ghibli Studio, but my mom thought it would be perfect. When the pianist played this song, there were a lot of mistakes near the end but I still loved it and I'll never forget it.

I love the way that this song seems to go through the stages of life, matching its name. At the beginning it’s a little slow and uncertain like a newborn child, then it starts to get more comfortable, playful, and even mischievous as if it were a young trickster. Then it deepens, making me think of first loves and heartbreaks. At the midpoint where it seems to start over is when they left their home to go make a life for themselves. It then repeats, if a bit differently, as they watched their own children grow up and leave. Then it went through stages of adulthood, with the aging and the love and the scary new territory. It’s the very end that gets me the most (apart from the beginning) with its sudden scary, intense bit and then a peaceful finish, like the fear of passing until you’re gone and then you realize it’s not so scary after all.... Anyway those were just my thoughts I wanted to share. Edit: Woah I had no idea people were liking and responding so much. Thanks guys, that’s pretty cool!
You're gonna want a long skirt, lots of flair so it moves well if you spin and lots of colours possibly hidden inside the flairing so they're only visible if you spin :-D...now I want to make that...
I always see a picture of white long skirt. Like lily of valley? It's not expensive looking however looking like it should be used when you're dancing with the tree? The one that emphasizes the beauty of nature.
I imagine a yellow dress with tons of layers that flows beautifully as you dance :) I never go for yellow when it comes to clothes but this song just feels like it
it makes me feel sad and happy at the same time.. sad that i will never experience such a beautiful world but happy because i got to listen/watch the movie and jealous and also saudade - bittersweet in a sense it truly is beautiful
This song sounds like how falling in love feels. Not just the bit where you're actually *in love,* but the realization, the dwelling on what that means, the ups & down, all of it. It's beautiful
What if people expressed their emotions by having music playing? Like as in an alternate universe where music plays quietly in the background or like in the movies. Imagine your sitting in a rocking chair knowing your time is up. You watch the sun come up as you then start to think about all of your memories as the music starts playing, the climax and all. Till the music suddenly starts to slow down. And then you take your last breath, smiling.
Reminds me of the Voidbringers from The Stormlight Archive. They’d attune to song befitting the mood and they’d all sing together in harmony; synchronized. They had a song for dying too
I don’t really show emotions very much but I play the cello and really enjoy it so much and I really dream of playing this but it doesn’t sound like it’s for cello it just expresses so much emotion in it It feels like it could be the background music to a ransoms persons life
I want this song to be played during my funeral, so that people who attend can leave with peace of mind, and to represent that life moves on like a merry-go round.
i actually got to watch the movie for the first time a few weeks ago and i swear the entire time i was like "i want him but i don't deserve him in ANY universe"
When you're a child, you enjoy the movie. When you're an adult, you both enjoy the movie and wonder how the Castle can avoid the laws of physics and gravity
one day, at least one person will find this comment. i just wanted to share something with the internet. this song in general just makes me think about life in a whole 'nother way. every time i listen to this, my heart sinks and just goes numb. it's mysterious, playful, and it just felt like i'm in the actual film. i've know Ghibli for as long as i could remember and everything about it is beautiful. i would like to thank you for the existence of these films. as time goes by, one thing's for sure, it'll never get old. if you're reading this, thank you.
Imagine actually living in howl's castle. You'd be able to smoke a fat one on top of a fricking moving castle while being in one of nature's most beautiful settings. That's a life i'd give anything for.
Hummed this to my cat before he died. Also hummed isabellas lullaby. He died June 23rd, 2021. I love you, Apollo. You made me so much more happy in this life even when I suffered from panic attacks.
Wow, you're gorgeous! I'd be in big trouble if we were together, cause you become more beautiful as I really look at you, and it's only been 10 secs. Peace out girl! Stay strong!
I feel happy listening to this masterpiece. On the other hand~ One Summer’s Day’ makes me reflect on life and think about how sweet my childhood was only to never be able to live those days again... remains only as a memory
The guy I’m in love with... this is his fav song. Never once have I played the piano in my life, I’ve only learned a bit of a song once. But no matter how much practice this’ll take, I’m gonna learn it. I have a piano in my basement, no judgment to myself, no negativity, and no doubts I won’t learn it. Wish me luck
Hate to say this, but it’s a reaaaally difficult song… I’m talking grade 7-8 level if you play the direct translation, so I definitely recommend finding an easier one! Good luck none the less!
To anybody who's reading this, I pray that whatever is hurting you or whatever you are constantly stressing about gets better. May the dark thoughts, the overthinking, and the doubt exit your mind. May clarity replace confusion. May peace and calmness fill your life. 💓
Pray not for people but take action to improve their lives, pray not for me but take action to make the lives of those who do not or cannot see this, help instead
After enjoying this song for many years, I've decided to write some lyrics that hopefully catches the meaning and purpose behind the song. You're welcome to change it to suit your own meaning, and maybe finish the rest of it off, but I tend to get so caught up in the harmony it would probably be rude to sing at all. [Starts at 0:10] Will you enjoy, the merry go round? Do you respect, its ups and its downs? As it moves slowly, your soul still lowly, can, you bring back your joy to your heart? (Joy to your heart?) Come and enjoy, our merry go round Never is lost, but needs to be found You'll understand that as it moves like a clock, It's meaning is yours to unlock. Come with and sing, its riddle that's told Your mind is young, but spirit is old. The people dancing, children are prancing, as they sing to the songs of our lives. It's never is shared, or sung as a praise, but all just know of its name. The song that's called life that is sweet and profound, but then, just went as it came. Oh why, strip us of our friends? (Bitterly, bitterly...) Why, give us bitter ends? But the merry go round just still happily goes on, spinning, like hands, of time. (No purpose, reason, or rhyme!) Come and enjoy, the merry go round Never is lost, but just needs to be found Hear cheer and laughter, tales of never after, but it's lights will still shine through the dark. [Leave this part silent to appreciate piano] [Continues at 2:58] "Care for a seat? It's known throughout town! Lifts you right up, and slowly back down! There's nothing simpler than in the way it moves, but brings all your joy to your heart. A chirpy tune, and seat like a horse! The ride is smooth, anything but coarse! It slowly spins, and moves you around, and then you'll see that it's its own work of art!" (I both cannot make anymore lyrics, and just love the song to much to put my thoughts over it by this point, and just let it sweep me off my feet, I hope you enjoy it, if you found this in the ocean of comments.)
+Turtle- Armpits I totally get your point, the whole magic and castles that walk on legs thing is awesome, but I think the time the movie tales place in is a really harsh one. But if you mean an other time, when there's peace, then I agree with you. That would be awesome.
Us gamers also have Sweden, C418. These pieces just turn into pure nostalgia for those who knew it for a long time. They just get stuck to the moment you first heard them.
Holland Kerr Indeed I will. When I grow up, I also want to be a seven foot tall terrifying monster with utility knives for legs, a skeletal arm, and, most importantly, metal mouth fingers to replace my bottom jaw. ^_^

(4:04) pov: it's the classical era, you're in a big fancy ballroom and everyone is waltzing to this song. you gracefully twirl your way to the middle of the ballroom. everyone's eyes are locked on you.
This melody is incredibly nostalgic to me. I used to have a music teacher I was kind of seeing as my father figure. For our last concert playing together we did this, it was the best performance this night. Now when I hear it I think of him and I can't help smiling. Too bad I didn't kept contact with him..
What a wonderful person he must have been. Go for it. Contact every person you think is still in touch with him. Look up his social media, his LinkedIn... You've got time. Do whatever you can to achieve it.
Realizing its called a Merry Go Round because they're in a time loop with Sophie going back to the past to tell Howl & Calcifer to look for her in the future

i can imagine so many scenarios while listening to this song. from falling in love to dancing in a ball room, and even an intense fighting battle happening. depending on my mood, i interpret this song as really gloomy or either very euphoric. seriously, this song has got to be one of my favorite songs ever. i love the way it makes me feel. sometimes the song makes me feel some type of longing for something, makes me feel like i’m in a fairytale walking on clouds, falling in love with a princess. for some reason, this song makes me feel anger as well haha. it’s fun exploring the comment section to see how other people view this song and i just thought i’d like to share my thought as well :)
I have a thing for fight scenes with abnormal soundtracks, and my favorite version of this is a massive fight backed with an incredibly peaceful and euphoric song. I love that trope.
@@YunayoChannel the fight scene I imagine is an older version with fencing like swords and revolutionary war type uniforms like 17-18 hundreds Royal clothing.
"Merry Go Round of Life" by Joe Hisaishi is an extraordinarily beautiful musical piece that evokes a deep range of emotions. The melody flows with grace and elegance, like a magical carousel that transports us to a world of enchantment and wonder. Each note is like a gentle spin weaving a story of joy and nostalgia. Listening to this song is like a reminder that life is full of twists and turns, moments of happiness, and moments of reflection, all wrapped in music that touches the heart and soul in a unique way. "Merry Go Round of Life" is a musical gem that will continue to shine in my music collection, taking me to a world of beauty and emotion every time I hear it.
This song reminds me of my wife, who is now passed. She had every studio ghibli movie(I got them all for her on her birthdays), she was so beautiful. All I can do is listen and cry now, but one day I will look back and smile. Together, we ruled the world.
Do you ever just want to erase the memories, feelings and emotions of the experience of watching a movie? Like u just want to watch a movie again, feel the magic running down your veins again.
i know exactly what you're mean,,, a part of me wants to just wait a good thirty years and see if watching it has the same effect because goddamn did it change me, the magic and beauty it brought into my life :-) ghibli films are a gift to this world
U should watch it with others that haven't :) I had my little brother first, then on the following month, I've convinced my mother to watch it, and honestly, I don't get tired of watching it over & over again; We all had experienced the same whimsical and magical feel of the carousel - it was a heart-warming evening ride as I got them along the journey
This song definitely feels like the theme to life for most of us. Ups, downs, loops and shit. Happy, sad, scary, mysterious, comforting. Even the repetition too mirrors life's own somewhat repetitive nature.
I can't imagine how much inspiration, heart, soul, creativity and musical genius it must take to compose the way Joe Hisaishi does. The world needs more music like this. Thank you so much Joe Hisaishi, I really consider you the greatest composer of all time.
It was a joke. Just a little hint that they can find some more beautiful music in all of the Classical eras. For instance, Andante Festivo by Jean Sibelius.
can we just appreciate how the ''resolve'' of the song is just a collapse like, after the masterclass in rhythm and order the instruments seemingly just fall down it's such a brilliant contrast and just goes unnoticed nobody talks about it
Of course it's emotional, nostalgic and so on...but no one takes care of the technical part? It's so well written and orchestrated, the counterpoint is flowing, piano and strings continuosly dialogue and mix together. That's really outstanding
this is the most powerful music that I’ve ever listened to. It makes me think about memories that I’ve never experienced, emotions that cannot be explained, happiness and sadness at the same time. Inner warmth, like is someone is embracing me and telling me that everything is going to be fine. after a stroke of sadness I can feel happiness and then comfort. can’t keep myself from crying and smiling every time I hear this music or watch the movie. truly terrific work
me tooo tbh this is the closest thing that can explain the different emotions i feel when listening to this. the thought of never experiencing something so beautiful is making me jealous, a forloned feeling but at the same time im grateful, because im happy that i got to watch the movie and listen to this beautiful piece of music really is beautiful.
lmao if this is the ‘most powerful piece’ you’ve heard then listen to more classical/ romantic pieces this is fairly weak in terms of texture and emotion xoxo
@@hannahm6152 I've listened to a LOT of classical music and this still tops my list. It's elegant, yet jaunty and fun, triumphant. As Maria said, it makes me experience happy memories I haven't even had yet. If this does that to me, yet other classical pieces can't, then idk what to say to you mate :)
I hate the way hayao miyazaki films and soundtracks make me feel. after watching his films, i always feel so empty and ask myself what the heck am i doing with my life. There's like a feeling of a hole in me. ughhh its like i got to know the characters and their life and then suddenly they're gone........the films aren't amazing in plots, but just the way the character lives their life and go through a journey, at the end, i feel so empty. listening to the soundtracks make me think about life....which i dont want to lol
luvygirl20 Oh, my friend, you're spot on! That's the essence of anime, it is totally normal for you to feel that way. Anime is beautiful, the animations, the stories and of course, the amazing soundtracks.
luvygirl20 if you think about it, a plot is literally the interactions of certain characters with one another and the following events that occur one after another BECAUSE of the nature of each character and their decisions. Dont be fooled, to like the characters is to like the plot, they are one in the same. But Miyazaki's art style is so unique that everything goes full circle, and its very rare for someone to achieve that properly.
Everyone is talking about dancing whit their dreamed partners and stuff, everything okay whit that, I even want that too, but what about, being alone by yourself in your dreamed house, in the morning, the sun entering by the windows, its summer, you enjoy dancing slowly to this songs. Isn't it just perfect? Only me? Ok :"3
This song is something that makes me smile unconsciously, not the kind of smile when u meet someone, but one when u just feel happy (tbh this is a new feeling for me)
Anyone else thinks it sounds like a bit of Chopin, some Shostakovich, a hint of Saint-Saëns, and the heartfelt emotions genius of Joe Hisaishi? Such a wonderful piece of music!
frank20091990 it’s beautiful how everyone sees this piece differently. This song hurts because it reminds me that there are so many bad things in this world and these stunning movies I watch for happiness are really just, not real. I don’t mean to be pessimistic, Also I agree, Nice shoes.
To anyone who dislikes this, here's a tip to enjoying classical music in general: Step 1: press play Step 2: close your eyes Step 3: listen to every note deeply as it enters your soul Step 4:(if it's a waltz-like song) imagine you dancing with a partner to this song Step 5: when the song ends open your eyes Step 6: repeat ITS THAT SIMPLE
I listened to this song with my ex-girlfriend... she used to tease me "learn how to play it on the violin for me". Now I am sitting here, plucking the notes disorderly and failing, crying because she left me. This used to be a sonorous banner of happiness. Now, it's a track for tears. I miss you, Carol. I'll never be whole without you again.
Don’t say that. You lived before you met her, you don’t need to be with her at all times to be happy. You obviously broke up because something went wrong, and that’s completely fine. There’s obviously another person looking for you somewhere. Just keep trying, one step at a time and then you’ll forget all about it and remember how happy she made you, and how much you want to learn from her onto another person in life. You’re not alone through this, okay? Just stay positive, think of all the happy memories you guys had and smile at them. You can’t bring them back, so simply just smile. Don’t cry over something you should’ve done because you can’t change it! Imagine how happy you will be once you meet the perfect person, you’ll be over the moon! So think about that, how happy you would be after meeting that one person, and how much warmth they would give. 💕😁
I get that. There are a lot of things I've loved that I can't do anymore because of the associated memory. I wish I could say it gets better. Maybe it does. But not completely.
@@Amins88 I still gonna love the track. That is why it makes it sad. I'm not gonna stop loving this thing just as I'm not gonna stop loving her, or at the very least, the time I had with her. And it fucking hurts, I tell you that. I really thought she was the one. And now she doesn't want me anymore. How can you go on living knowing that a stupid mistake ruined the thing you most wanted in your whole damn life? Fuck, man... no man should have to go through this. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy :/
@@hadleybrine3429 I really wish I could help you right now. But that'd be like the blind leading the blind. But it really does get less painful after a while. I know it's hard to motivate yourself like this, but I guess just try to experience as much as you can. Eventually the new memories will help mask the old ones.
Hey man keep your chin up.. it’s cheesy but there’s plenty of fish in the sea. You will find the one you’re supposed to be with, and someone you can play this song for without feeling sad :)
Everyone talks about playing this at their wedding cause it’s romantic, but it’s really fitting giving the title. You’re about to be husband and wife, and possibly even mother and father, and when you have kids, it’s not about you anymore, it’s their story now, and you’re just like your parents were to you, and it will continue until your kids have kids, it’s a cycle that you begin through marriage, the merry go round of life
This is the first ever piece of music to make me cry, I am a ballet dancer and I haven’t danced in about two years because of corona.
[Starts at 0:10]
Will you enjoy, the merry go round?
Do you respect, its ups and its downs?
As it moves slowly, your soul still lowly, can, you bring back your joy to your heart? (Joy to your heart?)
Come and enjoy, our merry go round
Never is lost, but needs to be found
You'll understand that as it moves like a clock,
It's meaning is yours to unlock.
Come with and sing, its riddle that's told
Your mind is young, but spirit is old.
The people dancing, children are prancing, as they sing to the songs of our lives.
It's never is shared, or sung as a praise, but all just know of its name.
The song that's called life that is sweet and profound, but then, just went as it came.
Oh why, strip us of our friends? (Bitterly, bitterly...)
Why, give us bitter ends?
But the merry go round just still happily goes on, spinning, like hands, of time.
(No purpose, reason, or rhyme!)
Come and enjoy, the merry go round
Never is lost, but just needs to be found
Hear cheer and laughter, tales of never after, but it's lights will still shine through the dark.
[Leave this part silent to appreciate piano]
[Continues at 2:58]
"Care for a seat? It's known throughout town!
Lifts you right up, and slowly back down!
There's nothing simpler than in the way it moves, but brings all your joy to your heart.
A chirpy tune, and seat like a horse!
The ride is smooth, anything but coarse!
It slowly spins, and moves you around, and then you'll see that it's its own work of art!"
(I both cannot make anymore lyrics, and just love the song to much to put my thoughts over it by this point, and just let it sweep me off my feet, I hope you enjoy it, if you found this in the ocean of comments.)
I actually tried to sing this but i can't. ;-;

luvygirl20 Oh, my friend, you're spot on!

You will find the one you’re supposed to be with, and someone you can play this song for without feeling sad :)
this song is so beautiful and nostalgic and rises my serotonin levels

This piece is filled with sorrow but at the same time makes my heart flutter and fills the empty void in my soul for 5 minuets
I’m convinced that this song is what true love feels like.

This is the kind of song that would play in a scene where the queen is running away from the castle.
SO TRUE!😨😨☺️
Bruh my sister has been trying to find this song for more than 5 months---
Poor sister
Everyone talks about playing this at their wedding cause it’s romantic, but it’s really fitting giving the title. You’re about to be husband and wife, and possibly even mother and father, and when you have kids, it’s not about you anymore, it’s their story now, and you’re just like your parents were to you, and it will continue until your kids have kids, it’s a cycle that you begin through marriage, the merry go round of life

It's funny how my friends laugh at me for loving classical music and yet have no idea what it sounds like.
This is the first ever piece of music to make me cry, I am a ballet dancer and I haven’t danced in about two years because of corona. It reminds me of the soft music I got to listen to when I was up on stage. Feel the flow of the music...feel the sound of my wooden point shoes hit the floor and really feel happy...I miss dancing
You are a Scottish one!!! That fact makes your story a bit more interesting than after!!!!😊
@@xzmafmm9998 I’m not Scottish.
@@Kiwibobps oh your name sounds like scottish, Ireland or a bit Welsh!!!
