Sports car money, SUPERCAR SPEED: Chevrolet Corvette, 184mph, 480+bhp | Top Gear

  • An all-American sports car dressed up like a European supercar - but how does the Chevrolet Corvette compare on the track? Freddie Flintoff pushes Chevy's latest 'Vette to maximum speed - 184mph in this case with 480bhp and a 6.2-litre V8 engine behind the driver. This is one quick car but does it come close to supercar performance - and what about the burning question: how does it handle corners?

      @Obsidian studios yeah, the US invented the internet. A Brit invented the www protocol, which wasn't a big deal and competed with other protocols at the time. What made www a thing was the Mosaic browser, at the time it was created www wasn't even the most adopted protocol, Gopher was. But with the American made Mosaic browser adopting www/html, that's what lead to the wide spread adoption of the protocol. So the Brits certainly deserve credit on the protocol, but any Brit saying they invented the internet, they're as accurate as Al Gore claiming he invented the internet.

    Can we lay to rest the whole "American cars have never cornered well" trope?

      Ngl the worse handling makes those american muscle cars way more fun to drive, as hitting corners real hard is way more of a thrill. Not to mention how they're typically faster in a straight line, which is the best aspect of driving a fast car, acceleration. OH and not to mention the fact that they're often just as if not more reliable and are WAY more affordable on average, I mean the 30k dollar mustang GT has faster acceleration than the 150k BMW i8 on top of being more reliable, which is sad.

    4:43 for context.
    Gave us the internet... No, not really. The first working prototype of "the internet" was made by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). This US military agency was the first to make what was previously a theory into a reality by creating a computer network (ARPANET).
    Years later, Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf (both American) invented the Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) along with the shorthand of internetwork into internet. Interestingly, TCP/IP was also influenced by the French scientist Louis Pouzin. This allowed for ARPANET and newer networks to dictate how data was sent, which is currently the standard.
    A while later, Tim Berners-Lee (an Englishman) made his contribution of the World Wide Web, HyperText Markup Language, and Uniform Resource Identifier (WWW, HTML, and URI) which allowed a layperson to browse the internet. Rather than the inventor or creator, I'd call him a contributor to the end product of the internet.

Similarly, many Brits are unable let go of the fact that the slightly obscure, terrible 90s movie "U-571" depicts Americans "capturing Enigma" when THEY KNOW the British were responsible for "breaking Enigma at Bletchley Park". I love to remind them that it was actually the Polish Cipher Bureau that cracked Enigma in the early 30s and then shared their techniques with British Intelligence. Anyway...

    Dear America,
    I generally have not been the greatest fan of your automotive industry. It always seemed a bit to garish and to some extent tasteless.
    I would like to appeal for forgiveness however because in a world where a hot hatch is £35-40k this vehicle is spectacular value for money. Even if it were £95k it would still be good value compared to some German super saloons.

    First comment ever here, but I really like seeing this in your spective. We have dealer issues over here that are making it way more than MSRP, but I'm glad it's the best bang for buck for ya'll across the pond. It's nice to see a company here doing something for over there for once that's not something re-badged or just some commuter car. I hope it's enjoyed for us both for a long time. Also secretly hope every C5 owner will upgrade and those will be cheap again unlike the market that's been going on the last year or so.

    Could you maybe talk about the understeer on the limit? The electronic brakes? The throttle response? How this compares to the C7 or Cayman? There is no meat here, its just all shiny visuals.

    • @ronretired282
      @ronretired282 2 роки тому

      All good questions. The track set-up removes all understeer. The cost is frequent tire changes. Throttle response is immediate. Electric brakes are great but, the feedback is not hydraulic in nature. My C7 was manual so hard to compare with the Stingray on track. In town, driving cross country, or out for a local drive the C8 is miles ahead of the C7 IMHO.
