  • Hurry! It’s YOUR turn to PLAY! 🪈🎶 Wait, never mind! You need to wait. Okay get ready! Never mind, it’ll be 20 more minutes. 😒
    Sound familiar? What do you do with a cold flute? How do you get ready to play when you can’t make sounds? If you try to play on a cold flute, you’ll experience some failures and frustrations. But, you can’t exactly play a scale on repeat right before it’s your turn to play!
    Some tips I tell my students:
    📝 Body heat is great for maintaining the slightly warm temperature a flute needs to simulate actual playing. In other words, it needs to be in a similar state to actual playing as close in time as possible to the actual performance. You can use your hands to warm up your flute. Just be sure not to crush your keys in a way that they are not meant to be compressed!
    📝 Every few minutes or so, blow lots of warm air through your flute with all of the keys closed, in order to keep the temperature consistent.
    Hope this helps you prepare to show your best self on performance day! And remember, a performance or audition is only one moment in your life, and does not necessarily represent who you are as a musician. The preparation and consistency that leads up to this special day is the real prize. Because, you can’t cheat that!
    Until next time! Best of luck to you!

      @@amberseeleyflute Definitely French horn. Most trumpets have a "spit valve" that they can use to empty saliva, some horns have them as well but they are never very good so we still have to "dismantle" or instrument every now and then to empty the saliva. @@SaraTheHappyOne i think its actually condensation from blowing warm air into a cold brass instrument rather than spit. If it is mostly spit, youre doing something wrong! I never expected there to be problems related to waiting too long to play for instruments without reeds (I had problems with my reed drying out), but hearing you blow through the flute with all of the holes closed really explains all the noises I would hear right before we went on stage.

      😅 excuse my ignorant question... But why does an instrument with a reed need it to be wet?

    • @notcoolman8864
      @notcoolman8864 5 місяців тому +31

      @AntarticSiren it will crack and break, also tone quality won't be as good. Reeds are made out of cane, and whittled into a very thin flat piece that goes onto the instrument. Most reed instruments have a single reed that you can wet in you mouth, but there are also double reeded instruments which is two pieces of cane tied to gather with two openings on the ends. Double reeds need to be sat in a cup of water for about 30 seconds or more to be able to play on them. Also with keeping instruments warm, it's not just flutes it's all instruments.

      it’s to keep it in tune! clarinets can actually be affected by temperature too! for woodwinds and brass instruments, the instrument gets too flat when it’s cold and too sharp when it’s hot! for strings instruments, they’re in a similar pickle, but in opposite ways. string instruments get too flat when it’s hot and too sharp when it’s cold!

      Temperature affects clarinets too! If you have a wooden one, you also have to keep an eye out for changes in humidity which can also affect tuning. Even on a plastic reed, humidity can also affect your reed differently.
      If you've ever had a performance where you warmed up in one place and had to walk outdoors to get to the final performance space, this is something to keep an eye on.

    • @curiositydrawsme9180

      As a baroque recorder player, one of the reasons that a wind instrument needs to be kept warm is so that there’s not as much condensation forming on the inside of the instrument. Think about how a car’s windshield can fog up when a warm breathing person first enters a cold car. I don’t know if it’s exactly the same with the flute as with the recorder, but the condensation can make the recorder sound raspy or burbly, like it needs to “clear its throat.” Keeping the instrument closer to the temperature of the air that will pass through it can help to reduce some of the condensation issues.

    Anyway, drums are much the same way. The drum shells and cymbals will contract/expand with temperature changes which can lead to tuning problems and an increased chance of breaking something.
    It's also useless to try and tune a cold drum because it'll just expand and change the sound as you go.

    Okay but a room full of people nervously and frantically blowing into their flutes like they are trying to give it cpr is a little funny!

    In marching band, we used to do parades in the cold, so we would wait after warm up we would just stick or flutes in our sleeves to keep them warm

    I never knew flutes needed to be warm,
    My current, likely bad, guess as to why that is, its because it affects the tone, small changes in temperature lead to thermal contraction, which shrinks the sizes of the tubes.

    • @curiositydrawsme9180
      @curiositydrawsme9180 4 місяці тому

      Good guess. That’s part of it. Also, condensation issues arise when the air blowing through the flute is a lot warmer than the cold exterior. Think of the way a car’s windows fog up when someone first gets in on a cold day. The water droplets in the windway can create a weird hoarse/burbly sound, as though the flute “needs to clear its throat”.

    Temperature also changes the tuning of the instrument. I remember when I was in band depending on the temperature we would have to adjust our tuning. Also i play the flute as well

    As a marching band kid (alto sax), we do this alot. All instruments except front ensemble. Before the half time show, we blow into the instrument enough to her air through it but not enough to make an actual sound

    I’ve both played dnd and consumed a lot of dnd actual play media before playing bg3 and I was still feeling kinda overwhelmed in the beginning. With one game of previous dnd experience, Theo is doing PHENOMENAL. Not to mention that figuring out the whole streaming thing on top of everything is a whole extra layer of complexity.
    I hope he doesn’t get discouraged or burnt out by the learning curve. He’s got such a chill and likeable presence. I can’t wait for more streams.

    The blowing trick is the best thing ever. It’s how I warm up my flute before ensembles and band or just on a cold day.

    The thing about keeping the flute warm makes me wonder if there couldn't be a way to implement, "heat pipe," near a grip point, to rapidly conduct heat across the surface. Feels like there's some potential there.

    In marching band, on really cold nights, we were told to keep it in our armpit. Obviously we had our uniforms on, which were usually REALLY thick but our band director always told us to do that.

    another reason is because keeping your flute warm doesn't mess with tuning, the temperature of an instrument especially if changed drastically can change the tune.
