Hi Nate! Thanks for your great lessons and congrats for the roadmap, I purchased it and I'm working on your exercise. I just want to ask you if you could do a lesson, or something on Elvin Jones; he's one on my jazz heros for sure, as for lots of people. I really love his playing in the classic Coltrane's albums, especially in Impressons. So it would be great to hear something about it. Thanks again! :)
Dude, Max Roach is the MAN!!! Like, so many people talk about his playing on ballads... but forget that he was the one behind the drums on Clifford Brown's "Cherokee." I'm just upset there's no footage of Max playing like that.
How to steal from Max ? you first find out where he lives......... scope out the place.........find out the schematic of his home security system ............. etc ......etc
12:35 I think personality always comes out when you have a higher purpose for what you do, drums or no drums. ”Roach gave new meaning and respect for the drums. His quest for innovation was unrelenting and he will always be recognized for his contributions to the aritsitc community. From the poverty of the inner city to co-creator of one of the most revolutionary and infuential styles in music, Roach believed that creativity and determination could make opportunities for anyone, no matter how difficult their circumstances. Roach wanted future generations to know, "It can happen, you can beat anything."
It's still technically still a paradiddle-diddle. Just like you wouldn't call an inside out parididdle (rllr) a "3 stroke roll" (or a ruff), it's the exact same situation here. He's still playing a paradiddle it's just offset. The sticking is exactly the same. Hope that makes sense.
Nicolas practice as though it was rumba. like paradiddles N singles. doubles in 8yhs , 16th, N triplets over jazz ride. dafnis style. it'll really open tighten ypu up
Thank you Nate, great breakdown and lesson‼️🌻✌️
I absolutely love your videos and your intellectual approach to teaching.. good for me who learned and played by feel for 40+ years.. Happy New Year

About that....I think his "Cherokee" playing sounds extremely strained and uncomfortable.

Max Roach was hilarious to watch. I once saw him play with 2 toilet plungers on a song called “Tie me Kangaroo down “

Thank you!
