I absolutely love the vp-9000 it's a much underrated and misunderstood hardware sampler. At the time of release it was very unique with a price tag to match. Great video daydream sound I've found your recent volume and quality of output an inspiration in more ways than you can imagine. Happy new year 🎼👌
What's up man!!!! Thanks for watching!!!! Yeah the initial price tag was crazy!!! Glad you like the content of the channel man!!! Much appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've got one of these... and over time it's become more and more valuable. I like how you say it does everything... and it does nothing... it's a paradoxical machine. Everyone should own one! Subbed. Not to mention it's killer DSP capabilities.
This is sick , love the contrasting tape varispeed stretching into crystalline digital artefacts , the textures are so lush , I literally daydreamed about this when it came out, it’s super mangler , superb demo....
I just found this video as I am rewiring my studio and I do have a VP-9000. You really make me want to get into it. I use vocals in my music and need to jump into the VP-9000!!
As a former owner of a VP-9000, this is a very good demo of what it can do. However, be warned that it is a child of its time and is dependent on the obsolete Zip Drive for sample storage and obsolete SCSI for direct computer/hard drive interface. I looked into coming up with a USB linkup to replace the Zip Drive & SCSI, but after warnings from others who tried and found that to be a complicated and expensive mod, I passed and decided to move the VP along. As mentioned in the video, Roland's (modern) SP-404 series of samplers can do much the same, but in a more user-friendly and higher-fidelity manner. The tabletop SP-404 is also ideal for gigging, while the rack-mount VP-9000 really is not. Still, the VP-9000 is an interesting beast.
@sneakydisco I considered going the Compact Flash route, but in my wheelings and dealings, I ended up with a decent SP-404, which also dimmed my enthusiasm to mod the VP. Besides, I really wanted USB to replace the SCSI so I could easily import samples to the VP from my DAW. Let me say that I think the VP-9000 is a cool device and it has many fans. This was borne out when I sold it for exactly what I paid for it. It went to a good new home.
Indeed all valid points about saving sounds. I just got a denon dn-300r, which I will use to send direct outputs from various gear. With its SD, and USB ports, these issues should be a thing of the past. Just a creative suggestion for you guys. Peace... Netm8kr
I just bought one on Reverb where the person installed a CF reader in place of the zip. I absolutely loved it…..for a month but I just managed to get my hands on a V synth XT used at guitar center for less than a grand…amazing right because they never turn up stateside and it was soooo cheap, but I kind of have two very usable variphrase machines now. At least they are both rack units and don’t take up a lot of space.
AMAZING...i never heard anything like it....digital plasticine ....the smoothness that transferred to ROLAND's SP range, makes them great creative efx units in their own right....AWESOME...I could definetely go for one...that Pitch / Tiiiimmmmeeee / fOrmANt combination is offdaplanet .
Bruh... Listening to this video got me laughing like a kid. Being that I was reminded of why I got this workhorse again. It’s easy to get lost of ideas with lots of gear. But, I heard so many directions to explore here. Keep em coming. Peace... Netm8kr ✌🏾👍🏾
What's up man!!!!!! I know what you mean!!! It can kind of get left out of the mix in comparison to other instruments in the studio but it never disappoints when it's in use.
I like how on the Roland demo video, the VP could change the characteristic and direction in pitch of a vocal track. Variprase is also on the V-Synth GT/XT, and VariOS rack. The new Fantom 2019 is now out. If the new Fantom can do this, am sold, but I wouldn't hod my breath for that.
I've owned a Roland VP9000 with maximum memory for years they are great machines changing pitch and tempo in real time without tying up my mac amazing but still very misunderstood synth try one if you can to see what i mean you won't regret it.
Inspiring video! Need to dust mine off and get back into it. I remember back in the day getting a USB Zip drive to transfer samples over... I do seem to remember it failing to 'Encode' stuff a number of times tho... Humm. Anyway, thanks Im getting mine out of the loft again after watching!
What's up man!!!!! Thanks for reaching out!!! I've never experienced any encoding issues. That's really strange. It's definitely a great sampler for sure!
@@TheDaydreamSound Thanks for taking the time to reply! I think my issue could have been to do with the file formats I was using at the time (Mac .aif/.aiff) and some would encode fine, others not. Never did dig deeper. But you've inspired me, thank you!
Having a V-Synth last year, I agree that Variphrase tech shines best as an effects unit. I personally wasn't too crazy for the V-Synths engine -- it sounded fantastic with a totally unique flavor, but there's better VA synths out there from the same era like the WaldorfQ that eat it for breakfast. So I don't think I'd use the V-Synth too much in my own music unless I was doing something like Pop, Trance or something that really called for it's super-clear sound. But Variphrase tech on vocals every now and then to add in a unique flavor? heck yeah! I think it might actually shine best as an occasional vocal processor :)

Great stuff ! That "Variphrase" algorithm is also at work in the fantom-G, but I use it more to multi-sample other synths I have as VSTs only, not so much in sound design. I bet you can do this as well, since the G is fully laden with effects to apply, but you lack the 3-knob direct control of the sound you have in the VP-9000. Maybe you could assign available knobs to do this, Never crossed my mind. That could make for a formidable live control possibly though.
The fantom series don't have variphrase, but tempo sync which is a slicing feature.variphrase is a formant conservative non destructive process only available in the vsynth series and vp9000. It allows you to transform a man in a woman and vice versa without changing time or pitch and without hearing slicing artefacts
to be honest: I would have loved such a feature implemented in the arx expansion cards for fantom,... that option for me would have changed the game , especially implemented like in the VARIOS : multitrack variphrase recording allowing sound modification like with melodyne. another killer option would be an extra flash ram allowing us to keep multisamples /beat sample fresh with non loading time and sparing Ram for audio tracks and I would have kept my fantom g vs my fantom x8. but still, I prefer the spectrasonics expansion srx cards over the non expandable rom of the G, giving the fantom a lot of flavours

Any suggestions would be much appreciated so I can get on with having fun, much health and thanks in advance.
I like very much the VP9000, but there is no value added regarding the V-synth, a much more powerful synth using Variphrase in my opinion. But...The VP9000 is cheap today. So, why not?
Yep, agreed,... however there is a huge sample library collection available for vp9000 available on ebay. And that is really inspiring. Another way: vsynth XT
The V-Synth contains the updated version of the VP9000 with added features and more polyphony/voices, (on top of its synthesis and sequencing architecture). It is definitely superior to the VP9000 in many ways, not least of which is the fact that the V-Synth has filters and many more effects. the V-Synth is one of the most complete, feature-rich, self-contained Digital Workstations ever made. Sadly, I and many others slept on them for years because of the ghastly look and interface.
