I am unfamiliar with Louis Wain's story myself, but watching this film and perusing his work afterwards (on the Internet, of course), I was once again struck by how much of Art, in any form, is borne out of human suffering and torment.
I didn't know what to expect at all going into this, and I completely loved it. I went just for the cats, and found a really brilliant strange film about life, art, mental health, tragedy. It is half joy, and half sadness, as the best stories often are. Artistic licence is taken with real events and in this case that is literally the point - we see the world how the filmmaker imagines Louis saw the world. It's art imitating art. Go and see this!
I saw this film being made 2 years ago in Walmer and Kingsgate , Kent and have been looking forward to seeing this film I’m happy to say it didn’t disappoint and it’s an excellent film which is bitter sweet in places which at times made me feel a bit emotional . It’s very well made , has excellent makeup especially as Benedict Cumberbatch as Louis Wain gets older and there’s also an excellent music soundtrack The acting by Benedict Cumberbatch , Claire Foy , Toby Jones ,and Andrea Risborough is very convincing and excellent . This film is very worthwhile in seeing
Surprised Mark didn't mention the 4:3 aspect ratio.....the showing I went to also had the surreal event of the lights coming up in the cinema and the curtains closing over the film after 60 minutes until the management were informed....perhaps it added to the film?! I didn't know the background story before viewing which was maybe helpful in this case.
I loved this film, it followed in broad strokes what is known about Wain.a minor gripe is that they should have given a bit more time to his later more psychedelic works but well worth watching
This movie literally has everything I want in it. Benedict Cumberbatch, cats, art, people on the autism spectrum, sympathetic depiction of mental illness and everlasting love, even after death. ❤️❤️❤️
I like the slightly human Tabby's with fluffy fur. I remember them from cards, I had a trompe-l'œil set. The fully clothed I don't like as much, but cat's with cup & saucer is funny.
Saw this movie today having missed this review and not knowing anything about the story before going in apart from it had something to do with cats. Was really shocked by how dark it was and really enjoyed how emotional it felt.
@@wb8905It was based on a true story, Nickolas Tesla, was from Germany and he had many inventions, but there was a feuds between Europe v America. He concluded about capitalism. There many archives on his inventions, which are still to be made.
Looks all Copperfield and Paddington, then is the most depressing film you've seen for a long time. I don't think I've ever watched a film that mis-sells itself so completely. Should come with a warning.
Just watched it with my parents. Wonderful performances, but I totally agree. I’d never have suggested it for them at the current time had I known how sad it is.

Louis Wayne was my favourite childhood artist. His later paintings are indeed blue.

Flowers was the best piece of television of the 2010s in my opinion so I'm glad to hear this

I just watched it and loved it. I always have a soft spot for a tormented artist who captured the beauty of the world in spite of their own suffering.
Really looking forward to this but I wonder if it will turn up at my local cinema (though they keep advertising it)

Saw it today and was charmed. Glad I made the effort.
Benedict Cumberbatch is one of the most versatile and transformative actor out there. He’s phenomenal.
This is similar to "The Prestige", the debate is which is better electrical current, between two rivals. AC/DC.
The prestige is in another league.

Flowers was weird, funny, and very dark. I hope this is the same
Well done film that surpassed my expectations. Not an epic but deeply engaging
Toxoplasmosis is no joke.
Is this…how she died?? was that a death scene? did he die from this cat poop bacteria?
I love cats but yeh, people need to be more aware of this.

Even the most cursory glance at Louis Wain's Wikipedia page will show you he had a tough life.
excellent
Ain’t nobody listening to all that!😂
Cucumberpatch really needs to shut up.
This is an unbelievably tedious watch. Avoid!
In my opinion it was very good and emotional by the end 🤷♂️
Thanks Davey, but I'm going to lean towards Mark's opinion rather than yours.
