You gotta understand A lot of our grandparents couldn’t go to school. They had to start working as a teen. Our parents were first generation OR depending on the circumstances of the family WE were first generation to graduate things. High school, college. My mother was one of those elementary school kids on the news getting spit on, rocks thrown, yelled at in the face by grown ass people - first generation of de-segregation.
Many, like her oldest sibling and my dad, left to the military soon as they hit the age of eligibility (16 or 17 with a parent signature). My mom was first generation to goto college. She got a perfect score on her finals, and they said no black girl could have scored that high. They made her retake a HARDER exam. She still passed.
Her roommate in college was an immigrant from West Africa and they talked about a lot of the things you’re saying. Her roommate was murdered while attending classes in the US.
So, yeah, graduating HS or University was like a source of pride. Racism wasn’t just water fountains and bus seats - it effected every aspect of life.
Of course, there was racism in Jamaica, Nigeria, etc too… but in Jamaica, Nigeria, Black is the majority. Also, those countries form of colonialism was more hands off. Them British dudes wasn’t running up on your school with guns and stones lol.
Everybody’s standards are set by expectations, and your expectations are set by your perception of what is realistic / attainable for You.
My grandparents valued education just as much as any immigrant parents, BUT.. realistically the mentality was One step at a time. Just get through grade school. Graduate High School. Try to get into a “good” college. Graduate college. Try to get a “good” job. Try to get a career with “good” benefits (a pension plan). Etc etc.
Ultimately, yes, it was family structure that made it all possible. You had to go off to college with whatever lil bit of money the family could scrape together and hopefully someone had a second / third hand suitcase. But, that was also before the crack era………

LOL...thats not what the Song is really about though... you must not understand Jamaican patoise or Jamaican culture. The song is about those Jamaicans who go to "Foreign" and are not responsible with their money, its about those who did not support friends and family "Back Home". The song is mostly chastizing those that left Jamaica and never looked back until they got deported...its really an admonishment of those who forgot where the came from and weren't wise enough to also build up a foundation "back a yard".... that's actually the main theme of the song..

What people fail to realize in this type of argument is that, immigrants usually some of the best brains/ driven people who *chose* to leave their respective countries to look for greener pasture. Coming to America is an upgrade so they do whatever they can to make the best of it. Comparing that small sample size with the rest of the population is quite unfair.

Till this day, I will never understand why 1) All the parents of the kids actually attended like graduating highschool was a big deal and 2) Said parents were hollering and crying when their kids walked to receive their diploma. It's almost like they didn't expect their kids to make it to graduation. Back at home, graduating highschool is like the "natural next step" honestly. I agree its a mindset we have been bred into but its also and excuse for our culture. Everything is culture over government or anything else in our community that hinders growth. People in general are sheep, but if you dont improve a culture youre more likley to find most of the sheep will only regress instead of progress , with only the few who having the ambition to go on to doing better things within that culture. The human mind has more control over enviroment than enviroment has over the mind, its just when youre conditioned at an early age to allow your neuro to be more connected to distractions, like pleasures, quick fixes etc that we allow more excuses for the reason we are held back lack racism discrimination etc. All that stuff exist but thats not the main reason we are held back. You can have two individuals who were raised in the same harsh conditions and one can still turn out successful, thats becase some peolle bave learned how to use pain and pleasure instead of having it us them. Once you do that you can accomplish anything and if you dont life will always have control over you.

Everyone knows this is not the mindset of all native bron americans to have only a minimum ambition to succeed or that all immigrant who come here are destine to succeed. but the difference between immigrants when it comes to wanting to succeed and americans who want to succeed is americans are groomed at a young age with more pleasure and distractions, along with trends, while immigrants focus more or opportunities, a lot of us take for granted along with being self sufficient with everything else being secondary. There are american families who raise their kids to think like hard working immigrants, but in general our society has brainwashed us to think this way and thats what also make us easier to control "pleasure before hardwork." The immigrant mindset is no different than americans who grow up in poverty in america. Though american poverty has more resources and less obstacles to get out of their condition compared to immigrants its still a trap that is set for people in those conditions to fail. But want seperates the few in poverty compared to the few in middle class who have a will to succeed is the people poverty have been bred with thicker skin and a harder upbringing to not only want to get out of those conditions but being more prepared to navigate through obstacles that can only be taught through human interactions and not in schools.
