Something I like about the relationship between Bigby and the Woodsman is how it reveals the Woodsman intended to rob Red Riding Hood and her Grandmother and only saved them from Bigby because he thought he would get a reward.
It's also realistic, Woody was a poor person. Heroic work doesn't give you nice salary. It also tells us that how bed time stories or even mythology could have been different to what actually occurred there.
Honestly, considering how Season 2 seems to be going off into it’s own universe instead of trying to match the world of the comics, I would love if we actually saw Red Ridding Hood in it, confronting Bigby for all the horrible things that he did. It would be a natural continuation of Bigby’s conflict in the first game.
Pretty sure Red Riding Hood is either dead or has no way of coming to Fabletown. I’ve only played the game but when Bigby sees her in a book he says something about her not making it out of the homelands.
It kinda has two, a lot of the scenes from the original won't work with dead characters and I know a lot of people used bigby to go on a killing a spree
@@nicolaszenhoBut also because he has the highest kill count of all Fables, according to Colin, but also according to the Book of Fables stating that when the invaders came, he devoured entire armies, because they'd scared off his usual prey with their arrival. So everyone truly still fears him for it.
@@stupidsexysatan5639 Bigby never used glamours. In the Wolf Ampng Us tie in comic theres a flashback to the red riding hood incident, and it shows that Bigby murdered the grandma on her bed, then pounced on Red Riding Hood, with Woody barging in immediately after. Red fainted from fear, and Bigby turned to face Woody and attacked him ,saying he only fought Woody because he looked tough and he wanted a good fight.
One thing I loved about The Wolf Among Us is how it explored that all the heroic Fables might not have been as altruistic as we were led to believe growing up. Such as Price Charming cheating on Snow White or The Woodsman being at Little Red Riding Hoods grandmother's house to rob the place and that he only saved her in hopes of a payday. Showing how the stories that are passed down can distort the events that actually happened.
well there are loads of different versions of fairy-tales IRL to which are dark and despite Disney altering them to fit their own vision, they're still dark in it by itselfs and i do like the fact that Bigby immediately infers that the book he looked and read about Snow White at the end of Episode 2 was the 'mundy version' of Snow White.
So, they kinda NEED bigby's ability to harm, but because of it, they'll never fully trust him, imagen knowing everyone around you, no Matter how close, will always have a "holy shit hes gonna eat me" thought in the back of their mind, must be really shity to be bigby.
Snow is such a good hypocrite that fits into that. She gets angry at him for fighting and when he starts to look more wolf-like, but never offers him any alternatives to getting the shit beat out of him or shot. She doesn't trust him fully and because so much worse when she becomes Mayor and tries to control and order Bigby around. Colin may have been wrong to say some things, but he was right and called out the Fables' paradoxical nature towards Bigby. They want him to defend them, but never want to be the ones to face him doing his job or rightfully defending him. Everyone is afraid of him, yet they all pick fights and beat the shit out of him only to then cry and call him a monster when he defends him or fights back.
@@lilchaos9212 exactly Bigby even laments at the end of the game that he just “can’t win with these people” (I can’t remember if that’s the exact quote).
The difference is that The wolf among us is a crime thriller Fables is a fantasy epic they are two different genres so the stories themes and tone is going to be different. The wolf among us is a prequel to legends in exile specifically, legends in exile is the most crime thriller story arc in fables so it makes sense they went that route in the game. Here's a warning for anyone wanting to read the comics that Bigby and Snow aren't really main characters per say sure they have a heavy presence but fables focuses on so many different characters with each story arc having different point of view protagonists
As a lore notation to this, the “main characters” are switched around a lot. It’s Bigby, and usually snow with him, most of the time and for the longest periods. For around 40-50 issues, it’s those two. After a certain thing happens, they both drop off for a bit. And then every 10 or so issues they’ll come in for an issue or two, and every like 15-20 they’ll be main characters for like 2-6.
I must agree. When I read the comics, I expected to be just like the game. I honestly loved the idea. but they didn't have nothing in common. In the comics, there's so much stuff happening that I lost track of time AND space. Everything was just so weird. but now, I guess i should read it again.
@@Harmonica821 Yh don't go into it expecting the sequel to the wolf among us. It can be just as dark at time however Fables being a fantasy epic makes the tone so much more different compared to the games. There are a few story arcs especially after volume 11 that are really trippy since it delves into absurdism fitting as it is based on fair tales. However volumes 1 - 11 is phenomenal if you're looking for a drawn out long epic story arc. There are a handful of arcs after volume 11 that are phenomenal however people consider them to be the weaker ones. (Side note if you do stick around with fables try to reach up to volume 16 although it's not part of the first half which is considered the best half volume 16 has the most heart wrenching horrific beautiful arc I've read in a comic)
Vishanthfishy .R so is the game canon to the comic or no? And does the wolf among us comic BASED ON THE GAME not the fables one, the same as the game or no? I know the fable comics are different but is the wolf among us comic worth a read even after playing the game? And does the wolf among us comic continue at all after the game? Oh and did the fables comic conclude on an ending or did it just get cancelled? There’s all my questions. Sorry 😂
@@oliverdillon2458 1: Yh so TWAU comic is a beat for beat copy of the game and does not continue the story. That will be saved for Season 2. 2: Yh Fables did end at issue 150 or Volume 22 if you read the TBP however the spin off of the comic called Everafter set after the events of Fables was the one that unfortunately got cancelled.
Something I think a lot of people over look in TWAU is the character designs too, especially bigby, the comic version of him always felt like it was changing to buff to old man but in this he feels like a proper mix of wolf and human. I also love Gren and the pawn shop owners define too something about there normal form and there mundy form really mix!
Yeah in the comics he looks kinda pudgy and like a troll sometimes. But in the game he's kinda thin but with muscle and is really hairy, like a wolf that turned into a human would look like.
I know my reply is kinda late, but I think that an animated tv show would be absolutely perfect, because they could keep the amazing voice talents like Adam Harrington (Bigby) and Erin Yvette (Snow). The animation would be interesting too! Sorry that my comment was so long, I just love this series😄
@@natt3975 no it’s fine the animation would cost significantly less then live action and reach the same narrative and keep the voice actors the show should be structured like Harley Quinn but more serious.
It would be awesome, but I personally like it much better as a game, just because the media is so much more engaging. And the game is almost a tv show by itself, I mean it's an interactive movie pretty much.
What I find interesting is the fact that Grendel, who people believed as an embodiment of literal evil, holds the ‘Big Bad Wolf’ over Bigby’s head. Bigby can easily hold “Grendel, The Creature of Darkness” over him but he doesn’t. It shows the difference between the two. Bigby is trying to not be like how he was in the past, but Gren would gladly indulge and go back to being a monster. It’s like two sides of the same coin
Im currently playing TWAU over again for like the 4th or 5th time, and it never gets old. This was one of Telltales best games and stories, not THE best but one of them. I can't wait for TWAU2! I'm so happy it's finally coming to light after all these years of waiting. It's such a great story as well as world, if they do it right, they could keep TWAU going for a long time. I'd love to see Bigby take on new cases or even take control of a new table for a new story. Either way I'm so glad this is continuing!
Well done critique and commentary. The Fable Noir of Wolf Among Us is such a rich and nuanced premise, and the synthy neon tonal juxtaposition overlayed to the grime of immigrant struggles is beautiful and original. We really lost something great when TTG collapsed.
Old Telltale you mean, after The Wolf Among Us everything slowly went downhill in quality, and after Tales of Borderlands everything REALLY went downhill
I agree that the comics aren't nearly as interesting as the game but it does have some interesting plot points and explores a lot of aspects untouched by the game, like what the fables were running from and why bigby is special in regard to wolves. I think reading the comics is a must even if it's not as interesting as the games since the game raised a million questions but answered none.
@@TheVileOne Well, that's right. However, I think both stories having differences helps to appreciate each as parallel shapes of the same tale, is could to see they share something which develops using fitting tones.
(6:20) You gotta remember that the it has been thousands, or hundreds of years. Bigby would have had a lot of time to settle into his role as Sheriff. Its only those with the most bitter taste in their mouth that simply can't accept Bigby as a changed man (wolf). Mind you, even the comics say that he's regarded as the Poster Child of reform. He was given a second chance and he took to it like a fish to water (but not without some struggles along the way).
to be fair to the fables, it's understandably hard to accept that the wolf/person who would've enjoyed killing you in another life is now supposed to protect you, especially if said person is still capable of committing severe acts of violence (when given the right push). if i'm not mistaken, by the events of the game he's been the sheriff of fabletown for two centuries? which is a lot to us but in the eyes of beings who are essentially immortal, it probably isn't a huge amount of time - especially since bigby had terrorized them for centuries longer. that's not even taking into consideration fables like red riding hood, who were directly harmed in some way by bigby's actions, and the comics never really explored their relationship in depth.
@@hustle_rose You're not wrong. Later on, we discover that Bigby set up a plan to find Crane in France (or was that England?). Had someone spy on the old Croone to see if he was really capable of betraying their side in the war. Long story short, he kills Crane and makes absolutely sure to make it look like an accident. Though I wonder how much good that would do, seeing as Fables that die, who aren't tossed in the Witching-Well, are reborn in some new way or another. But anywho~
@@hustle_roseyep, it's mentioned how Crane was the mayor for 110 years in the lore book of Crane but i always thought that he just began being a mayor giving the implication and tone, time does go fast for someone that has lived for thousands of years and that can equate to actual humans in real life.
@@hustle_roseBigby helped people escape the Adversary and fended off the armies of the Adversary, he guarded the portal to earth and in the end it was Fable town who asked him to join in, he didn't come to them. He's much less soft in the comics and knows to an eye on everyone and suppress criminal behavior, any sign of dissent is dealt with swiftly by him, the fact that Fable town citizens fear him is a valuable asset to him in the comics.
@@wireboar7321 a lot of the details of the comics are fuzzy to me, but was it fabletown as a collective who invited him into the community or was it just snow? and i'm not saying people fearing him can't be valuable in his line of work, i'm just saying it's understandable that people are wary of him, which stands to reason because like you said, fear is how he gets them in line. he helped with the adversary yes, but he's still banned from the farm because of his past transgressions, both in-game and in the comics, so the kind of harm he's capable of is still on the mind of a lot of fables (which imo is both a good and bad thing).
The wolf among us really did what the Boys show did to it's comic, it enhenced and built uppon it, scratching and rewriting what didn't work or was just weak.
I like the game a bit more too but the Fables comics are realy good. The biggest difference a fan of TWAU should keep in mind when they start Fables is that Fables is not a noir thriller like the game and Bigby and Snow while important aren't the protagonists. Fables is an epic fantasy that plays with different genres in almost every arc and focuses in Fabletown itself and its inhabitants and their struggle of being far from their lands. And later in their war against the Adversary that made them exiled and their efforts to rebuild what they've lost.
Anyone who has read the comics will agree that Bigby’s motivations aren’t as fleshed out as they are in the comics. He 100% grapples with his past and is distrusted by everyone in Fabletown. For the majority of the first arcs he is outright hated by a lot of folks in the series, despite the fact he really is just trying to keep them safe. This video is just…. Pretty wrong in most areas. Fables isn’t a noir comic, I will say that. But it is one of the best written and fleshed out comic series ever made.
Spoiler alert: I just hate how such good characters like Colin or blue beard the most well written characters end up dying a lame and distasteful death in the comics. The game really handle killing characters like the crooked man or bloody marry or Georgie, There deaths lead to something unlike the comic where it’s just kill off for the fun of it
I would disagree with Colin since his death kickstarts the rebellion in the Farm, so he's not really killed for the fun of it, nor is it entirely pointless. I do agree that the way Bluebeard died kind of sucked, since it felt like a one-sided fight in the comics, even though it was implied that he was a really skilled ruthless fighter.
Showing the relationship between Bigby and his former foes/victims in the game was really interesting and well-written, but in the comic book it made more sense - I mean, they all spent in the mundane world few hundreds of years, so they all had a time to work this out and get over with, however, there were still some resentments towards Bigby, just not that expanded in the story due to the passage of time in NYC. One of the biggest differences is also the absence of the Red Rose in the game - those who read comic know why.
@@eleanorwoods6873 you mean, what is the reason of her absence in the game? Well, as we know from the "Legends in Exile", Rose Red lived a very dynamic life, full of parties and love affairs away from the Fabletown, and most of all away from her sister, Snow White, 'cause they had a quarrel at that time. It wasn't till the events from the mentioned comic volume, until Rose Red returned to the Fabletown, seeking money from Bluebeard, which started all the mess with her "death"
Just to point out that Bigby didn't suddenly love Snow, he swapped his fate to die as a monster with that of the Prince. Thus the general confusion for both Snow, Bigby and the not so lucky Prince.
@@andrewsanusi8462 In the comics. It's a whole thing with Bigby basically brute forcing the fate change with a "swap my fate or get torn to shreds". I struggle to remember the specifics though, it's been a few years since I read it.
Bigby never dressed as the Grandma, its acknowledged in the comics that is what Woody said but in reality Bigby killed the grandma on the bed, waited for Red to come, then pounced on her when she walked in the cabin, with Woody coming in seconds before Bigby killed her too
can't lie but i prefer Bigby dressing up as the grandma because it goes to show how succumbed Bigby was in his past for his violence etc. which works better for Bigby as the sheriff especially the events of TWAU S1
@@godzillazfriction Nah not really, Bigby was always about brute force and making his enemies fear him. He never thought ahead or planned any encounter, he went to his father 7 separate times and got tossed out each time. Bigby was a giant wolf so 1 how is he putting on any type of clothing? And if he could why would he do that just to lay in the bed and wait, vs pouncing in red as soon as she walked in. He didn’t have that patience, it shows how much of a blood thirsty creature he use to be. @@StoogesTheTwo bruh it's a fantastical wolf that is based on the fairy-tale Big Bad Wolf who dresses up like a grandma for sadistic means and that was about it, Bigby clearly knew about his sadistic tendencies as to how Mary was describing Bigby of his past...
@@godzillazfriction Lmao okay? How does any of that make it make sense and fit the story?? Not saying he wasn’t sadistic bozo, but he wasn’t putting clothes on himself even if he wanted to, how does a wolf the size of a horse with no thumbs or hands put clothes on tell me? Even in magic land it makes no sense with Bigby’s size. Bigby showed his sadistic side more when he destroyed entire villages, destroyed the houses of the little pigs, killed man woman and children alike by just showing up and causing havoc. Mary didn’t say “You use to dress in old lady’s clothes”, no. She described Bigby as a feral beast who gave you no time to think when he attacked, he was incredibly angry at his father and himself so he took it out on the entire world. awesome analysis. Definitely agree that there is so much nuance in Bigby's relationships and his self awareness that could be amazing to be explored. wish it was looked into more often in both media honestly.
No hate because I can tell you put a lot into this but Wolf Amoung Us is actually in continuity with the comics. The reason that the racism is not as big as a problem is because at the end of Wolf Amoung Us Snow becomes in charge and treats them diffrent. What Wolf Amoung Us did is just a diffrent story raking place like 60 years before the first Fable issue so they had awhile for fables (who had to use glamours) to adjust more. PS I know it wasn’t 60 years ago I was just exaggerating lol 😂
Exactly! The reason things are so much better for everyone by the time the comics start is because Snow has taken the place of Crane and has already improved a lot of things in Fabletown. Definitely not 60 years between the mid-1980's and the early aughts of the 21st century though, or I'm a lot older than I think I am🤣
I’m genuinely curious about how Red and Bigby would interact in this world, I hope season 2 tries something like that, it’s okay if they don’t but…it’ll be something interesting considering Red Riding Hood pretty much saw Bigby mostly as a big ass evil dark wolf.
This amazing, perfect, flawless game has a comic?!?!?! I need!!! I love this game so much, it was so well thought out and detailed, I'm excited to see how the second game plays out!!!
(2:55) And the part where she openly admits to taking Baby Bear as her lover. But at the same time, she was such a hot headed activist, she didn't even really care about the Fables around her. And I have no idea what made her believe she and bunch of non-bipedal Fable could just take over Fabletown with only a few modified firearms. And they didn't even have a Witch in their corner... some rebellion.
Good Commentary. Agree with everything you have said. The game had a much more noir theme to it than the comics. I too, was really surprised when they didn't explore the historical conflict between wolf and the real red riding hood. The comic is still an enjoyable read but I wouldn't say it is very deep. Also, while it has some adult-themed moments sprinkled throughout it. There are many issues where I felt like I could be reading a typical Disney story targeted at kids. Have to really credit the writers of the game knowing that it is a much deeper nuanced beast than the comics
Reading the comics now and I gotta agree. Good video, deserves more views- in 2019, when game 2 gets released and TWAU is popular again, hopefully this video might get more traction.
@@not-trained-in-dagobah8813 I heard that shortly after my comment, I'm so upset! Hoping everyone laid off gets new jobs soon. Maybe a different studio will pick up some of the lisences of some of the series telltale was making, including TWAU?
This video essay puts exactly how I felt about Fables into words-Fables wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t nuanced, and if you’re going into it looking for the same themes as The Wolf Among Us, you won’t find them. But that said, I am SO desperate for The Wolf Among Us 2. The first game was so good and left me in total awe.
....which is not the case here seeing as Fables' creators know exactly what they are doing. Maybe you are talking about this game. Which the devs are not the creators.
@Boronious duck I like how having rape automatically makes it a rape fantasy. FUCK OFF! It is always portrayed as horrible and tied to someones character. Does the game glorify killing prostitutes? No it doesn't you fucking spoon.
I'm glad you found it useful! It was a big disappointment to me when I first started reading the comics, though I managed to make it though like 70 of them, I think.
In the game he's shrieff because of heroics he did when they all were leaving the homelands. I'm guessing he fought off enemies giving fables time to escape.
I’m probably one of the few that prefer the comics to the video game. I feel like there are a lot of aspects of the comics that this video ignores. One aspect that I really enjoyed was the fact that Bigby is controlled in the comics. The games depict him as a wild animal, which is true, but after hundreds of years it’s unrealistic that he wouldn’t have learned to control his temperament. Yes he can be feral when he wants but he’s not constantly fighting against that nature. I also think some of the other characters, like Snow White, are much more likable in the comics.
I agree the wolf among us is a deep examination into the faults and issues such as society has, utilising a central character to do so. The comics while good don't focus on this but resolving overarching narratives utilising a myriad of interesting but not as deep characters. Both are good but wolf among us feels more personal and interesting.
I feel if there were a fable comics about Bigby just solving mysteries in fabletown. That would be a good series. Though I'm sure 90% of them would just be "Jack did it."
awesome video, man! twau is one of my favorite games ever. i feel like you got one or two things wrong about the comics, maybe because you didnt read all of it. but what you sure as hell got right is that the comics didnt exploit all its potencial. Nevertheless, you do a great job explaining why this game is so good. you deserve more recognition for this.
Surprisingly most of the people I know who did check out the comic afterwards weren't turned away by the immediate differences between the game and comic. Now getting them into JACK of Fables is a tough one and that is something most people REALLY miss out on.
I agree that the wolf amomg us has an amazing character development, specially on the animal part, but like, two diferent genres and also, in some regards, diferent protagonists. The game focus on bigby while the comics focus on snow (in the beggning at least). The game is a noir detective focused.on more street level threats and problems more in coumom to.our routine. The comics sets in interdimensional with a lot of bars above in therms of power and problems. Invasion of realms, Destiny, etc. But overall great analysis of the game
I agree with this take. I loved the game and naturally assumed that the comics were similar to the game. Bought a compilation of the comics and began reading them...didn't last long. I stopped reading because it wasn't nearly as good as the game story.
Dude really??? In the comics bigbys past is brought up all the time. He is basically the only 1 general amnesty doesn’t fully apply to. He isn’t allowed on the farm under any circumstances. He is even forced to miss several years of children’s lives because of it. He is guilted into letting one of the pigs sleep on his couch. He is constantly referred to as an animal and a monster. It kinda feels like you did a quick google search and didn’t actually read the comics
Dunno if anyone will read this, but I remember from a text-only part of a special of the comic that Snow White went to look for Bigby to offer him the position of Sheriff of Fabletown, cutting him with a cursed dagger that made him a reverse-werewolf, trading a mortal vulnerability to silver for the ability to assume human form without using glamour. Snow White and her sister met the Big Bad Wolf while fleeing from the Homelands: he was guarding it, killing the enemy soldiers and granting passage only to people who’d let themself be bitten by him to make sure they could be trusted.
I really like him and I think In the second one he might show more of He’s conflation between letting lose or being In control also when I was looking at the trailer for the second one when he turns into his wolf form it’s completely different maybe it’s because it’s either saying that this was the time when he didn’t really know either to be in control or to let loose or it could be that they wanted to do something different in the second game and have a different look either way I’m excited for the second game of this and I hope that may be snow him will be together in the second one

I agree, although after Mr Dark was done it lost a lot of steam for me. When they are exiled and under threat from the outside is when it is most interesting. When it becomes more of a Civil War it’s not as interesting.
Hey, I barely found your video, two years later. Just wanted to say that it’s wonderful. I found Wolf Among Us through YT, and then I read the entirety of fables. Despite how long and how many more stories they had in the comic, and the first ever volume being a “who dunn it” like the game, I still preferred the game. Being grounded emotionally is a thing I’ve come to realize really matters to me in media. The Woodsman never shows up in the comic, ever. Yet I remember him more than Mr. Dark or “The Adversary”. His emotional arc and possible peace with his fabled and more successful enemy hit home. Your video just put into words what I’ve been thinking of for years. Cheers. I’ll be sure to watch more of your stuff in the future.
Great video! My friend had sparked my interest in the fable comics and the wolf among us some time before and it pains me to see the comics don't deliver as well upon the concept. Shame really, it's such a neat idea and with the way that you explain the premise it sounds like hotbed for great story telling! I suppose comics are like though. In the realms of superhero comics writers often come by and redefine heroes into new forms, Frank Miller comes to mind with Daredevil and Batman. All the more sad too see they likely won't be able to continue with a season 2 given what happened to telltale recently. The notion of the former big bad then becoming the main character just seems real neat to me along with the "fantastical ripped down to the mundane" thing. I'd love to see someone do something it.
Thanks! Yeah, the basic concept is brilliant, and it really deserves to be fleshed out more in some type of media, but sadly probably won't now with the death of season 2. I heard awhile back they were developing a movie based on the comics, but those things rarely work out, and I kind of doubt they'd be able to capture and flesh out the concept like TWAU did.
@@tacitcantos2005 movies are great but they aren't always well suited to adapting certain forms of media. Given the track record of some of my favorite things when adapted to the filmic format I'd be concerned. Granted you did mention noir in regards to how Twau treats it's story. If a film maker leaned into that part of the story I think that would lend itself well to a movie. Perhaps a shorter story centered around a single case within the setting of the twau universe, rather than a long drawn out arc. I imagine some difficulty might come in needing to establish some of the rules of this universe but that might also be expedited by most characters being based on well known fables. It's an interesting thought to be honest. Granted longer form storytelling would probably suit itself to a book, comic, or even tv format.
anyone who played the game first would be absolutely dissapointed not because the game was better, but because they went in to read the comics with an entirely different expectation.
There it is. There's a popular comment here mentioning that the comics are a fantasy epic while the game was more or less a crime thriller. Once you can accept the comics for what they are, the same way ou accept the game for what it is, you can really tell what you like and what you're pining for. For all intents and purposes, I enjoyed both as playing the game first helped provide me with the voices I'd hear for each character as I read the comics. I didn't come into the comics expecting more of the same because that's just not what the comics were.
Bigby really is a complex character in the game, it’s like he still doesn’t know what it’s like to live like a human and its a toll to be hated on so bad but you gotta think, Bigby was literally just a giant animal, an intelligent one but still an animal living off animal instincts which unfortunately happens to be killing things to eat, yeah it’s bad he terrorized people but then again he was an animal and it’s hard to judge an animal for being exactly what it is sometimes
This was so well done and dissected. I've personally hadnt read the comics and eventhough they aren't as good as the game, It makes me appreciate the game that much more. I wanted to say a lot more but im not the best at putting my thoughts into words, overall man this was a great video analysis and comparison. It's even peaked my interest into reading the comics more. It's still a mess what happened to TellTale, but once again it allows us to trull reflect on what a good overall game TWAO was. Can't praise this video enough, and how does this video not have like thousands of views?! Keep doing what you're doing man, just earned a sub.
Now with the new season announced I hope to see others fables like: The 7 dwarfs, the others 3 pigs, the bears, granny and little red riding hood with her relationship with bigby it will be interesting to see this besides tinkerbell, blackbeard, Peter Pan,pinocchio,Snow's twin sister,Rapunzel and cinderella + bigby's family and his father and brothers Can't wait for 2024 🤔😁
As I was playing, I wanted to make Bigby this melancholic man who doesn’t shy on being the monster; but tries to express, without words, that he won’t act as one. Because empty words will be worthless to those with closed minds
It's tough to take the author seriously as he says severally that 'its not to say the comic is bad' and then goes on a tirade of why it's of an inferior quality. It would seem a key difference between the game and the comic that most have pointed to in the comments is that the latter's approach is similar to Game of Thrones in its sense of scale, switching of protagonist, and to a lesser degree politics and espionage. The irony is that the game, fabulous as it is, is starkly similar to the way modern super heroes comics are written in that it makes little attempt to deconstruct centering the story on a single character which is by no means a short-coming in and of itself. However, had the comic gone through this route, it would have been no different from said comics. I could easily make a comparison the GOT because it is as good in its critical accomplishment. I haven't played the game but from the reviews, I have little doubt that it's good.
Great video, I couldn't agree more. I came to read Fables to scratch the itch after 100% TWAU, only to be quite disappointed by it after around 50 issues, guess I have no choice but to wait for season 2 now
I saw this video for the first time today. I am amazed with your thoughts and writing alike. Exceptionally done! One of the best, well made videos i have ever seen. Great job!
I definitely preferred the feeling of The Wolf Among Us than Fables. I read up to about issue 50ish in Fables and got kinda disinterested. It felt way too much like everything was about the romance between Bigby and Snow white, and not about, well, actual fables.
@@knightslayer6161 after a day of research I found out that the game is in another timeline fables: the wolf among us comic was created and in the end the Crocked man escaped so it mean that they are not connected
@@rahulsar2030 yeah that’s true.

This was already written in the original comic
So, they kinda NEED bigby's ability to harm, but because of it, they'll never fully trust him, imagen knowing everyone around you, no Matter how close, will always have a "holy shit hes gonna eat me" thought in the back of their mind, must be really shity to be bigby.
Seems like actual commentary on the modern police force, huh?

Something I think a lot of people over look in TWAU is the character designs too, especially bigby, the comic version of him always felt like it was changing to buff to old man but in this he feels like a proper mix of wolf and human.

Why do you think rose red is not in the game?
@@eleanorwoods6873 you mean, what is the reason of her absence in the game? Well, as we know from the "Legends in Exile", Rose Red lived a very dynamic life, full of parties and love affairs away from the Fabletown, and most of all away from her sister, Snow White, 'cause they had a quarrel at that time.
It wasn't till the events from the mentioned comic volume, until Rose Red returned to the Fabletown, seeking money from Bluebeard, which started all the mess with her "death"
I was looking on how to explain the comic and why it didn't feel as REAL as the game, and you put it absolutely perfectly

Good Commentary. Agree with everything you have said. The game had a much more noir theme to it than the comics. I too, was really surprised when they didn't explore the historical conflict between wolf and the real red riding hood. The comic is still an enjoyable read but I wouldn't say it is very deep.
Twau is one of the best game I have ever played tho

Nevertheless, you do a great job explaining why this game is so good. you deserve more recognition for this.
I fell in love with this game, and I went out and bought up the graphic novels afterwards, but they didn’t scratch the it’s that the game created
I much prefer Fables than Once Upon a Time.
Hope with season 2 they cut ties to the comics and turn it into its own thing
Surprisingly most of the people I know who did check out the comic afterwards weren't turned away by the immediate differences between the game and comic.
Now getting them into JACK of Fables is a tough one and that is something most people REALLY miss out on.
Can we all just agree that TJ is the greatest?
I agree that the wolf amomg us has an amazing character development, specially on the animal part, but like, two diferent genres and also, in some regards, diferent protagonists. The game focus on bigby while the comics focus on snow (in the beggning at least). The game is a noir detective focused.on more street level threats and problems more in coumom to.our routine. The comics sets in interdimensional with a lot of bars above in therms of power and problems. Invasion of realms, Destiny, etc.
But overall great analysis of the game
One is a game, the other is a book
Duke Ortega 's description by Thomas outside Mcanale's in Death Masks suggests Conquistadors were quick to kill. mean and crafty .
They did make a graphic novel version of the game that really expands on Bigby's past
I agree with this take. I loved the game and naturally assumed that the comics were similar to the game. Bought a compilation of the comics and began reading them...didn't last long. I stopped reading because it wasn't nearly as good as the game story.
The funniest thing about the fables comics is how Geppetto is an evil emperor.
Incredible analysis. Definitely gonna look into your channel more after this.
I keep watching the fan series Fabletown here on YT until we get TWAU2
i absolutely loved this video. the wolf among us is my favourite game of all time and i don’t see this changing any time soon.
aww yeah season 2 baby
Only less than 1k subs!!!! WTF
THIS VIDEO WAS AMAZING!
DEFINITELY SUBBING
Fables was a good comic series
How many books are there
@@richyrichy9932 150 issues of Fables, but there are also some spin offs-Fairest, 1001 nights of Snowfall, Cinderella (something I forgot the title of), Jack of Fables (or something else like that). There might have actually been two Cinderella spin-offs. They are really good stories tho, you should defo check them out
I agree, although after Mr Dark was done it lost a lot of steam for me.
Wait a minute A Wolf Among Us was originally a comic they literally made cinematic for the game
Kinda, Bigby got his own spinoff series while they were writing Fables. It's pretty good
I cant wait for the next game the hype!!!!!!!
Coming 2023
There is going to be a season 2 now, have you heard of it?
NGL this is actually a really really decent video and I'm now a subscriber because of it.
anyone who played the game first would be absolutely dissapointed not because the game was better, but because they went in to read the comics with an entirely different expectation.

I guess the problem for me is in the genre itself, there is no mindset that would make me like the comics.
I genuinely love both the comics and the game. The comic is long though, as I'm a late-comer
I think this is a testament to how good Telltale was
Bigby really is a complex character in the game, it’s like he still doesn’t know what it’s like to live like a human and its a toll to be hated on so bad but you gotta think, Bigby was literally just a giant animal, an intelligent one but still an animal living off animal instincts which unfortunately happens to be killing things to eat, yeah it’s bad he terrorized people but then again he was an animal and it’s hard to judge an animal for being exactly what it is sometimes
Bro.... this video 10/10. Perfectly said
This was so well done and dissected.
Thanks! I really appreciate that.
Now with the new season announced I hope to see others fables like:
The 7 dwarfs, the others 3 pigs, the bears, granny and little red riding hood with her relationship with bigby it will be interesting to see this besides tinkerbell, blackbeard, Peter Pan,pinocchio,Snow's twin sister,Rapunzel and cinderella + bigby's family and his father and brothers Can't wait for 2024 🤔😁
Winnie the Pooh is public domain now imagine they show up lmao
I wonder if they’ll introduce Beowulf, since we DO have Grendel
bigby lowkey reminds me of fenrir
The wolf AMOGUS 😳😳😳😳
Damn I didn't even know it was a comic ! I need to read this !!
One of the greatest games ever made bro
I came to read Fables to scratch the itch after 100% TWAU, only to be quite disappointed by it after around 50 issues, guess I have no choice but to wait for season 2 now
Thank you for the subtitles
I saw this video for the first time today. I am amazed with your thoughts and writing alike. Exceptionally done! One of the best, well made videos i have ever seen. Great job!
I definitely preferred the feeling of The Wolf Among Us than Fables. I read up to about issue 50ish in Fables and got kinda disinterested. It felt way too much like everything was about the romance between Bigby and Snow white, and not about, well, actual fables.
I can’t wait for wolf among us 2
Wolf Among us 2 BABY Let’s celebrate!!!!!
I just need to know if the comics and games are connected
Let’s go waited 9 years for this
@@ittskabeer7285 most likely since the first game did. Somewhat.
@@knightslayer6161 after a day of research I found out that the game is in another timeline fables: the wolf among us comic was created and in the end the Crocked man escaped so it mean that they are not connected
I cannot believe that he tricked Red Riding Hood.
Apparently, the Boy who cried Wolf was considered to be Bigby's partner in the game
Woody got exposed more then anyone in Wolf Among Us😂
Who's ready for season 2 wolf among us
