The attention to detail they put into this game at times still impresses me. Honestly I think the Radio Stations in general hold up better than most of the gameplay does.
@Timothy Dexter I'm think alot of the radio commercials in 2 DO hold up better, but the newscasts in my opinion were much more informative in the original and actually felt like you had caused something noteworthy of reporting on. The banter between Jack and Jane always felt perfect in my eyes. I just finished a playthrough of the original game again and I gotta say, As much as the gameplay has aged a bit (ESPECIALLY with the activities), Im torn on which game did the radios better. Ah I miss you 2006 GenX and K12.
@@lumi1934 There used to be an article about David Lawrence, who was the radio producer for SR1 (he also played "David" on the talk radio station and was the host of Ezzzy 105, and he voiced Stefan). He worked in radio in real life and his knowledge of how it actually works and sounds obviously translated into SR1's radio, which is part of why I think the entire radio from the game holds up well. The talk show, the DJ dialogue and weather reports, the bumpers, newscasts, and commercials, everything is fairly close to how radio sounded in the mid-2000s. He wasn't brought back for SR2, and the radio in that game does sound noticeably different and more "fake" and GTA-like in a way. The commercials were still funny, but nothing had the same authentic sound to it that it had in SR1. Also, just as an interesting fact that I noticed, SR1 was going to have a second talk radio station hosted by two real life talk radio hosts (Bill Leff and Wendy Snyder, who are hosts on WGN Radio in Chicago). They're credited as playing the hosts of "KRFS" in the game's booklet, but not much else is known about this, and the station was removed before release for an unknown reason. I wonder if any dialogue was recorded and if it'll ever surface one day (provided Volition still has old audio files).
@@BadgerGoodger Considering the 10th Anniversary Streams they did a few years back, it wouldn't surprise me if they did have a few more radio stations lying in the archives we've never heard of. And Yes KRFS, that infamous station that appears in the SR1 Manual and has a logo in the game files for SR2, personally I can kind of see why it was cut given how much time you spend just doing crazy shit in general, would have been hard to concentrate on radio talk while dealing with some of the shit you get thrown at you. I know however that wasn't the only station cut. Sizzurp and WMD KBOOM have their logos in the city and files, so Im kind of surprised that KBOOM didnt at least make the cut. Im not sure we'll see anything come out of the old builds again considering that they would HAVE to pull devs off of whatever project their working on just to make the builds stable enough to run on dev hardware but we'll see. Frankly Im kind of surprised we didnt get the build dumps for Saints Row after the anniversary. Maybe then some one would have found the source code and we'd be able to have SR2 be "Remastered". Let's just agree that from Saints Row the Thrid onwards the stations just nose dived in quality.
@@lumi1934 There probably were extra radio stations for SR1 and 2. The E3 2005 footage of Saints Row (when the city looked WAY different to what we got) had some kind of rap station called 101.5 WPMP. It had DJ dialogue, and Gin & Juice by Snoop Dogg could clearly be heard. And according to the SR Wiki, a station called "K-PASA" was found in the files, obviously would have been Latino music. As for KRFS, I didn't consider that it would have been cut due to them realizing that people wouldn't be able to focus. I almost wondered if the hosts of it backed out, given that they host radio together in real life and maybe didn't want to associate themselves with a violent video game about gang warfare? But then I wouldn't think they'd be added to the credits, either, since that would imply that they still got paid for doing work (and if they backed out, that'd break their contract or whatever and they wouldn't be credited anywhere). Regarding the SR1 stations in SR2, part of me thinks that was just leftovers from the first game. They made logos for all of them though, but maybe they just did it and didn't intend on using them all. I still wish they would have brought back KBOOM, but without David Lawrence, they couldn't do it unless they came up with another Conservative talk parody. I also wish they would have just dumped the builds of the games. Maybe someday, since I'm sure dedicated fans would be way more willing to sift through code and fix the game enough to remaster it, or at least find interesting stuff that they missed in the streams. SR3's radio was mostly awful, too, with a few exceptions. The Adult Swim station was apparently their attempt at having something similar to talk radio because of the extended DJ dialogue, but it just wasn't funny. And then every other station being rehashed from SR2 despite being a new city just screamed laziness (The Blood was the only one they remade from The Krunch, and it's like they gave up after that and decided to just bring every other Stilwater station to Steelport).
@@BadgerGoodger Yeah I remember about WPMP being brought up on the wiki (Which on a side note needs some serious fucking updating, its pretty much been half abandoned after Gat Out Of Hell), but I didnt know that was from an E3 Build, and not to mention the even OLDER OLDER builds from when the game was on PS2. If we were to ever have those pushed out it would be a glorious day for Video game archiving and a field trip for The Cutting Room Floor. Part of me just wants to see what other changed they had planned but anyway. Not to say some of he Music in SR3 was bad, I kinda liked K12 and always will love Klassic 102.4 but the DJ's didnt have any soul, they just felt like cut outs of stereotypes there for the wow factor or what not. Had it not been for Voliton going INSANE over trying to get a new style down for the game then maybe every other aspect could have lives up or been better than SR2. And on that note? SR4? What the fuck happened to the radio's AGAIN?! GenX and KRyhme became forgettable, Four-20 came back despite being replaced by Kabron in SR3, WDDTCPDG was removed entirely and replaced my Mad Decent which?? Just felt like another K12 excuse, The Blood/Krunch was axed entirely and K12? As much as I like my dubstep and electronica, most of the music they chose was just bad imo. Honestly Klassic was the ONLY station in that game I felt like had some effort put into it. Zinyak doing his reading of screenplays and Pride and Prejudice was fun and memorable even if they repeat far too quickly and the music selection was fantastic compared to everything else. Honestly I just have a lingering hope that once we get SR5 or Saints Row Remake they they'll bring on some of the original radio teams again to make them more appealing and memorable once more, I... hate to admit it but I think the newscasts will always be more memorable for the weight they carried and the realistic banter between the studio and Jane. One can hope. One can hope.
I love how instead of writing them off as gameplay mechanics, they establish in the actual canon that plastic surgeons are advanced beyond our years and certified gun shops sell rocket launchers. Lmao
