  • I spill the beans about Shadow the Hedgehog's crazy name history! You won't believe it - before he was the Shadow we know, Rouge the Bat had that name! And get this, Shadow was originally called Terios! I found this gem in some old, buried Tumblr post from the official Sonic page, like, 5 years back.
It's seriously nuts to think about a universe where Rouge was rocking the Shadow title. Let's just take a sec to picture Shadow the Bat and Terios the Hedgehog with his rockin' bangs - how wild would that be, right?

I think Rouge being named Nails at a point in time isn’t that far fetched. I mean, in SA2 she’s the dark counterpart to Knuckles who’s named after one of his defining characteristics; and looking past her spheres, her boots are a rather iconic and an important feature of her design. She also used them to dig like Knuckles with his gloves, and has the “Pick Nail” upgrade. So overall I think it’s entirely likely she was named Nails during some phase of development, likely when they figured out what her gameplay was gonna be like in SA2.

About rouge being shadow and shadow being rouge
    It sometimes happens
Valfaris originally had as a final boss a shoot them up segment
The sequel became a shoot them up
    It's surprisingly common

I'm happy to assist: I owned a Sonic Encyclopedia some years back, and it showed some concept art of Shadow as a "female figure" - in the sense that she literally looked like a shadow. Funnily enough, that prototype "Shadow" inspired Blaze's initial (and somewhat final) design, not Rouge's. The official Sonic Wiki page might have the same pics, but don't quote me on it. 😅

There's a few other thieves in games named Shadow, it honestly fits the idea of Rouge pretty well in that way. Maybe that could be why they thought to change her name at all? And then "Shadow" was too good a name to pass up entirely.

It is a bit of a generic thief name so I could see that as well!

This was a bit neat to learn

I think Terasu is the easier solution to the origin.
A Japanese game character taking it's name from a Japanese word.
    Occam's Razor for the win.

The reason why her name is"Rouge" it's because it sounds pretty, it does not reference Knuckles, because during Sonic adventure 2 Rouge and Knuckles didn't even each other.

I mean it's not a crazy stretch, she's the parallel to Knuckles, Rouge is a shade of red and Knuckles is red. They are both treasure hunters and their stories constantly overlap

Lol thank you and I'm realizing I used titular completely wrong lol. Not sure what was going on in my head when I chose that word but good catch 😂
