Nice overview. I really wanted one but haven't been able to pull the trigger just yet because of the details you mention. The PRR version has black handrails, so I think Lionel just chose to make the NYC version and a few others silver for whatever reason. I think they could have done a better job with the tether and maybe they tried to do too much with the swinging bell, although that's a really nice feature. I'm glad you have yours sorted out and it's working well now. It's a very nice-looking engine. I really like the MTH tooled steam engines and will hold out hope for the next ones like the upcoming L-1 and Decopod engines.
The crossing by my "main street" area is an MTH Railking crossing signals with sound set. They are activated by the Azatrax D2T-DS infra red detector set. I discuss the Azatrax detector in one of my layout videos. It uses two pairs of detectors that reach across both tracks and sense trains in either direction. ua-cam.com/video/vAZtCK4xWvk/v-deo.html It is the easiest ,.most reliable, as well as affordable detection system I have used.
Nice looking switcher.
Thanks for the overview.
