Something I do with forested areas is use a browner hue of ground cover within the forest to reflect having less light hit the forest floor and a ground covering of decaying leaves. For those forested areas I usually use splines instead of individual trees. Oh, and currently use TANE. Previously had 2006 then 2009.
As someone new to the whole Trainz experience, I found this extremely helpful. I have my own ideas and want to do my own series. Granted this will take a lot of time and patience, but I'm confident I can do this. Thanks for the tips and advice. Look forward to seeing more in this series. Keep up the excellent work.
I have been a route builder for years and still never finished, nicely put video to help the new fooks! A little tip adding grades to tracks gives realsom to a route
Your video was posted some time ago but I just came across this, thank you for the tips & tricks here (just getting into Trainz). I bought 2019 version but hardly did anything with it & now just bought a 1yr subscription 2022 version so I need all the help I can get. Half of the battle for myself is just navigating around in Trainz, but it's coming along. Gotta start somewhere LOL. Thanks again!
Very nice video! Thank you for posting this video! I'm always building routes in Trainz both American and British routes, and this video helps give me some tips and ideas. I look forward to seeing more Trainz videos in the future!
I appreciate this video greatly! The railroad tracks along my line are extremely remote or on the back roads and old by ways deep in the Appalachian Mountains. alot of the track is hard to view unless you walk on them so this gave me a little inspiration.
I use SAM VS Grass 2 as my default grass texture and SAM VS embankments because they have the most realistic grass texture and in the case of the ground texture the grass no repeating pattern. Since the embankments and grounds match you don't get an ugly outline at the bottom of the embankment. I have only built 3 routes and someone on a modelling forum commented on the signalling on one of my videos "You need more signalling and your distant signals aren't right". I replied that the signalling was 100% accurate to the actual real life signalling and was measured from OS 25" to the mile maps so every signal was exactly where it was in reality. He never admitted he was wrong but gave me a like !
This is the most helpfull video for modelling i have ever come across with no segways or distractions in the message. That pattern you get in soil tectures has always annoyed me. Thats there is Gold to me, great stuff. But...lol....i Quote:" ...even the flattest of locations have some kind of hills or dips...." i call bullshit. Ride the Indian Pacific (trans Continental Railway) across the Nullabor Plain in Australia 1108 Miles(1783 km) with a 297mile (480km)section that is dead straight.
Jared, despite how much you've grown at building routes and modules, my favorites of yours are still the Cass City Branch line modules (particularly the GTW Buffalo Yard) and your Marysville Railroad Stories modules
Speaking of railway routes, I think I have a few railway routes you could design in the future specifically around a Virginia theme. Some of the crossings we have are… rather unique compared to some other regions of the country.
I'm working on a route based in New Zealand, a 1:1 recreation from Hamilton NZ to Auckland NZ, the issue is, New Zealand is extremely hilly and mountainous with complex terrain that is hard to recreate in trainz, so I have to use tools like TrainzDEM and Basemapz
I bought my first version of Trainz in 2015. And its taken until now to start to be able to say im pretty mediocre at things like terrain work and detailing. Im going all out with a massive urban scene currently as I continue to experiment with my skills and such. Its fun but trainz is very tedious is all I'll say. Good to have a video to throw some basic tips out for how to just get started.
8:49 this may sound dumb but where did you get that road spline and intersection I’m asking because I would like to add them to my custom route. Btw this video has really helped me make my custom route look way more detailed and realistic
One of the troubles I have with route building is finding usable scenery assets. A lot of DLS assets I have or find are crusty TS2009 Textured Low Lod Buildings
This was a great video and I'll definitely be using the tips and tricks that you showed in the video. Although, do you know a good place to get desert-ish like shrubs and bushes? And maybe cacti? Thanks and again, great video!
Another thing you forgot was the custom traffic on the DLS, IE right hand drive DLS, trust me it makes the road traffic way better for background activity.
One of the two votes for this video's existance was this talented young man. Here's his channel. Give it a look. He makes awesome Thomas videos - ua-cam.com/users/TheIndonesianIndividual
There's no need to use billboard trees as backline, if SpeedTreez You're using have a proper made LODs. Every SpeedTree asset has the last LOD made as a billboard, so your forest will be full-detailed at closer look and plain and fast billboarded at distant ranges. I advanced games SpeedTrees even has more than one billboard for many directions (up to 16 in UE 5).
As someone whos made extensive use of the TS2~ world editor, (chech out my Lackawanna Mainline in the Steam workshop), its amazing to see how much easier the Trainz world editor looks to use. TS is really not a productive way to build routes.
Heres a challenge, near Wisconsin Dells the track ballast is purple due to this type of rock that is mined there heavily, i want you to try and find Purple Ballast track
Informative video. I have a question about longer routes; Is it acceptable to create a route nearly accurate measurement between major cities to the real life or make the route shorter for gameplay purposes?
The two people who said yes are the two coolest fans.
Hey, as Grandfather W would have said, "That's two more yesses than it would have been had it been two less yesses than it was."

I used to put clumps of grass round the bottom of telegraph poles but it got tiring after a hundred of them. I use Ger Forest texture in forests.
Ngl I could've sworn I replied "Yes" when I first saw it but this is unbelievably helpful!

This was super helpful, until now all I had to help me was those old Infraredbob routes and vids.
Glad to see I wasn’t the only one! lol

Yooooooo great series, hope we get an episode 2 soon
You have truly come a long way. Awesome work
Great Video, nice to see how someone else gets there ideas into trainz. I did pick up a few new ideas as well, hope to see more.
We should get more of this series, I love this
