The last time we ordered these shafts was quite a few years ago and they were only about 2 to 3 dollars each, like we said in the video, but after looking them up in the present day, we found they are between 7 to 9 dollars. Our apologies for misquoting that, but inflation.... We still think this is a very reasonable price to only have to pay every 5 to 10 years in order to keep these filters going strong for so long and is the only piece of the filter we have ever had to replace other than the seal rings. The seal rings only cost a few dollars and we have only ever replaced them one time in 24 years, and not because they leaked or broke down, but just as preventative measure. The aquaclear 110 is 500 gallons an hour, you know I never did a water change in my pond and the nitrate is 0, I just replaced the impeller on my 110 after 15 years of use, awesome filters and even better video!
Always good to over filtrate. Might throw a 110 on my 36 gallon bowed so that i have plenty filtration and oxygen so i can overstock.@therandomman6647
Good video. We just bought a 110 today for our 75 tank, replacing the Marineland we had (which I think sucked!) High hopes for this one and your video set my mind at ease a bit. Cheers
Every part can be ordered individually! I used two AC70 on one large planted tank for a handful of years, the flow was a bit strong for my angel but many parts are interchangeable and I was able to put AC50 impellers in the AC70 motors. Worked perfectly. I experimented a lot with materials and found that stacking the filter housing full with sponges worked best for me. I just set up a 92 gallon corner goldfish tank and am going to use two AC110 with double sponges or sponge with poly fill. These make strong flow, even after I doubled the length of pickup tubes. I may try cutting fins to reduce flow and lubing the shaft for noise reduction. Anyway, these are the best HOB out there, still. Simple, easy, customizable, cost effective (free) to maintain, large capacity. Love these. Enjoyed the video!
Wow this filter is as old as me lol great info! Many people just think a certain way and do not accept other ways of doing things. It’s true most of the filtration comes from substrate or dry rock/live rock depending if you do salt or fresh. As long as your fish are healthy and parameters are good then do it your way
I just replaced the impeller shaft today on my AC 110. It was not very bad at all after about 5 years of use. I do not use sand so maybe that is why it looked pretty good. My AC 110 always restarts if the power goes out. I did have an AC 70 that would hang up and not start some times. The AC 110 has a much larger motor so maybe that is why. Thanks for the great video.
Hey guys, 24 years for a filter to last is impressive. Annual cleanings only aren’t bad. That is a big one. The lava rock & plants sound super helpful. A lot of pieces are very inexpensive to replace. That piece on the pump was changed easily. $70-$75 24 years ago is great! Really nice & detailed video. FW & have a great weekend
Awesome information Dan, amazing how long you can make good stuff last if its taken care of properly!! Hope you and Jack have a great upcoming weekend dude
very helpful guys, my 110 is only 8 months old, but i was intimidated about taking it all apart. you showed how easy it is, i serviced it in 5 minutes, i also agree with u bout cleaning sponges in tap water. ive been doing it that way recently with no issues. 75 gal tank with deep substrate, lots of decorations and 3 plants. also with so much good bio bacteria u can use a old sponge to cycle a new tank and put a new sponge in 110, no worries.thank you for making this
I really appreciate the video! Thank you for taking the time to explain everything! I've used these also... And mine might be due for a tune-up! 🤣 Thanks guys y'all are awesome!!!🌱🐟🌿

Thank you for watching Mary....that shaft is something we have found most people just don't know about and it makes a huge difference....thanks again for buying us a cup of coffee we really appreciate it....Jack has his first big track meet on Saturday and I am going to buy him a huge vegan Sundae with that afterwards because he has been working so hard and helping me so much....I will let him know it is from you Mary....we hope you have a wonderful evening and our condolences again to you family for going through such a tough time....have a peaceful night.
Great sharing the old school and legend way of fish keeping, remember back in those days without filter we only run air stone and deep substrate, there's almost 0 maintenance except adding water monthly since air stone bubbles pops and lost some water. Fish is happy breed like no tomorrow, natural environment is the way.
right on.....most of our tanks we do very little for.....just let them be and enjoy them....we will be rescaping this big 220 soon....changing it around quite a bit.....its long overdue
Hahahahaha....been a nurse for 30 years Diva....it takes a lot to make me flinch hahaha....Jack not so much he has OCD bigtime and would never....he really wore the mask the whole time no kidding....thanks so much!
Just upgraded to two of these AQ110's on a 100 gal, and one on a 55... Somewhere I read to lube the shaft, so I did that... Vaseline was used, maybe it will make those SS shafts last longer....? Seems to make them run smooth and quiet.
they run very well when they are cleaned and there is good tank and water health as far as Vaseline we have seen this done for many years but are skeptical that petroleum base lubricant would not harm our fish and plants....honestly for 2-3 bucks every few years we'll just replace them....we did end up getting a new case for the 3rd one we mentioned and have rescaped this 220 and added it so it's doing phenomenal now....that video will be coming up soon...thanks for watching
Hey guys! These are actually the only commercial filters I still use. I long ago stopped using those leveling tabs though as people are hard on them. I cut a ring of 1 1/2" ABS pipe instead.

What’s the purpose of the aqua cave? I like the video. I love how straightforward you guys are. Pretty much you said look this is what we do and it works for us…..period. Kinda funny too. 👍🏾
Surprised you haven't use Vaseline on the shaft rod to lubricate the Impaler. I did that on a Fluval Aquaclear 50 and it helped with the sound. I can't hear the motor anymore, just the water. Also, I've seen some people complain about how it doesn't restart waterflow after power outages. Don't know if the design has changed, but mine keeps itself primed as long as it's leveled. Also, connecting it to a smallbattery backup unit keeps it going during brief outages.
Ours restarts fine but honestly we don' have power outages because we are solar....we have a lot of videos about that as well....these work tremendously well for being 24 years old and we never used any type of lubricant due to not being sure if it would harm the fish....doesn't seem worth the risk when we can buy a shaft for a couple bucks and just pop it in every few years....thank for watching and for the tips!
