Consider that in 90's the average winger was probably at 180/200 lbs. He was 260, so looking at his size nobody expected him to be a back, but a forward (probably a lock). It has to be said that he started playing as number 8 and then he got asked about trying to play at wing and the result was what everybody knows.
poor guy man I use to see him going in for his dialysis every morning. if he didn’t go to England for the World Cup he’d most likely still be here today
If he was at a 100% nobody was gonna stop him. He was already very ill. Just imagine Jonah being healthy, good diet, supplements serious excercise regime. It would have been crazy. RIP Jonah, James and Joost😢
People say that he wouldn't be as effective in todays game because of the increased strength and conditioning of the players he would be facing and point to the fact that many modern wingers are 110kg+ but dont have nearly the same impact as he had. What they are forgetting is that no other winger of his size since has had his level of acceleration and top speed. The speed he was moving at combined with his size is what made him so difficult to tackle. Also the players between 95-02 weren't that much smaller than the players we see today, the loose jerseys make them look less built but if anything there are more short wingers and fullbacks below 5'9 in the game today
It also ignores the fact that Lomu would receive the very same conditioning and training if he were playing nowadays. If that's how effective he was back then, he'd be even more lethal if he debuted today.
3:53 - 4:02 try by marshall pretty much sums up the “no try against the springboks” draw in three defenders including running over the full back just to offload back for a try. Classic
