    Hi there!,
    I am Australian, I had started applying to NYU although it is pretty last minute, and I dont think my teacher recommendations will come thru in time especially during this busy holiday season, also it is harder to translate my academic scores against the U.S. system. Anyway's I guess I just wanted to ask a fellow artist and student this, especailly seeing you're video's you jusrt seem incredibly nice and supportive! I am continuing tossing and turning in where and what to study. I always knew I would pursue acting no matter what I do however i also do have some interest in film and thought it could be useful to aquire some of that knowledge to help me with a career in the film industry in general, so I thought i would study a degree in film whilst pursuing acting part time along side that as there are no degree's here that offer both. However I have been going back on my decision and what to do I have auditioned to a few good acting schools across the country that I have not gotten accepted to. There is a course I gotr into but I am not sure about it, it is only 2 years it seems good. I guess I just wanted to here your opinion seeing as I am going to be pursuing acting and I do really like it and feel better when I do it. I compare myself to people especailly famous ones I see in tv shows and their path which makes me question myself more and contradict myself under stress. The U.S start their school yesrs differently to Australia so if I cannot apply this year it will feel like waiting two years. Just wanted to hear from a passionate actor or idk I guess just wanted to get this out.

    Hi there! I was really concerned with the resume portion of TISCH drama, specifically the film/tv section. As I haven’t exactly acted in any films so far, should I take out that section or what? Also, regarding musical theatre, is it fine to also list camp and school performances or no?

Your financial aid package would show up on your account if you are accepted so you would be able to see what you're getting yourself into before accepting - hope you find a way to make it work!

    Hi Gretchen! I’m a current sophomore studying business at my university and I’ve been watching to transfer to or attend NYU TISCH for the last two years but the pandemic made it very hard to do so. I was in a business program for more of a backup plan and I actually started garnering acting experience last year. If I transferred to Tisch for Fall 22, I’m not sure how many years it would take to graduate? I’m hoping to study acting for film but also am interested in learning the root principles of drama and theater acting while majoring in something like Economics to help me if I wanted to work anywhere as a day job. How flexible is NYU TISCH with transfer students (if you’ve met any) and double majoring?

    Hello I am a community college graduate and I am considering applying to NYU. At CC I ended up majoring in digital arts. Ive been wanting to take an acting class and I did and loved it. My parent wants me to work towards a degree bachelors to transfer to so I’ve been thinking hard if I should double major (if I get accepted and enroll) in Interactive Media Arts (IMA) and Acting. How difficult would it be to double major with Acting? Are summer acting courses available if you don’t want to take breaks? I don’t get much financial aid which is why I’m more expected to attend a CUNY school. But all CUNY schools don’t have a good balance of an IMA type degree and acting. I’m 22 and I don’t want to make the wrong choice because of an older sibling that went to an expensive private college and is in debt. I’ve even considered attending an acting conservatory and going to college part time. But then I would have to also have a job which is a lot to juggle if I just double majored and focused on that. As cheesy as it sounds I’ve been noted by teachers “you have talent”..Its just that acting is such a hard career and I’d love to do it but it’s very outlandish thing to go for especially when I don’t have much experience. Sorry for long post!...I still need to figure things out any advice. Thanks.

      Hey there! Sorry for the delayed reply - I so so wish I could give you the magically right answer for what to do and that I could guarantee that it'll set you up for success. Sadly I can't and neither can you you'll just have to trust your gut.
      That being said here's my two cents about it. I'm a double major but my drama (acting) degree always always takes priority. You can not go into acting if you're not prepared to give it your full attention. A common thing you'll hear from actors, that I will echo is that acting is what you do when there is absolutely no other thing you can think of doing. It's a tough industry with often little pay off so if there is anything else that you could see yourself doing you should do that. Now that being said if you LOVE it if it's the only thing you can see yourself doing then buckle down and get to work.
      Now double majoring is possible but it is NOT EASY. Some double majors are easier to do than others but mine especially is a bit of a nightmare to juggle. It's still doable though. I would only advise you to double major if it is in an area you personally feel equally passionate about. I know I want to teach so I'm getting that training. However it is still deeply rooted in my wholistic journey as an actor. I am looking to be a teaching artist not a school teacher.
      Summer acting courses are an option and many of the are AMAZING!
      Only you know what's right for you but I would say that if you don't have a ton a ton of acting experience and if money is a large factor then doing the conservatory program might be the right choice. This will allow you to test the waters in a rigorous program. That way you can still be working while you get training. There are evening conservatory options that might suit you. That being said if this is what YOU WANT, if YOU WANT to be a professional actor and you're ready to bet the lot - I would go for the degree. Worry about the double major after your first semester (you'll still be able to do it) come in only focused on acting. Throw yourself in and give it all you've got. Typically you'll know either way good or bad after that first semester if this is the place/path for you.
      A final option thinking on the financial side would be to do your undergrad in acting at a more affordable college and then get your MFA later through NYU, Yale, PACE, etc.
      Haha how's that for a long reply :) I wish you all of the best of luck on your journey. Remember whatever you choose IS the right path. Follow your instincts and be bold!

    Hi there! Awesome video! I have my tisch audition for acting this week and I'm curious to what kind of questions they might ask in the interview following the audition. I've heard several different things but I wanted to know your opinion. Any curve balls, resume questions, etc.?

    • @bestgretchen754
      @bestgretchen754  5 років тому +4

      Hey! That’s SO EXCITING hope it all goes well! As far as the ‘interview’ it’s really more of just an organic conversation. The auditioners are very kind they’ll likely start by asking you about how you felt your monologues went (the interview portion follows the monologue section not the songs if doing MT). Then from there they may ask about your resume or background a bit. Most of the questions are to just try and figure out why you’re here auditioning at NYU, what you want to get out of your next step in training and what excites you in the arts. I was asked about what I was interested in outside of acting and also if I knew about the studios/which ones I might be interested in. They really do have a great ability to spot which studio is going to give you the best possible training for the next phase of your life so just BREATHE, remember they’re on your side, and try to enjoy yourself! Best of luck break all the legs and let me know how it went!

      G

      We are in the same boat. I'm trying to figure out what the average Tisch Theater Arts graduate earns. One place I found said $24,000/year. For NYU, the lowest paying three majors were all Tisch...acting, singing and theater. $300,000 for an education that pays you $24,000 a year seems to be financial suicide. Please tell me I'm wrong!!

I'm definitely more passionate about acting but I also want to make my own craft in the future so...I thought filmmaking would be more "worth it" but still not sure. Hey!
      The different drama studios that you can be placed in 1st year are: Adler, Atlantic, Experimental Theatre Wing, Misner, New Studio, Playwrights Horizons, Strasberg and Production and design (that is the studio for designers). Each has a different approach to acting. I am not sure if you can apply to Drama and Film I don't think so but you should look. I would advise you to apply for Drama and during your interview mention your passion for film making. Playwrights might be a good fit for you. After your first two years of training two upper studios become options one of which is Stone Street. They are film focused and students get to work on writing and editing some projects there. Hope that helps - good luck!

    • @bestgretchen754
      @bestgretchen754  5 років тому +3

      Hey!
      No worries! So when you audition for NYU you audition one time and are considered either for all of the acting studios (if you sing) or all of the acting only studios. There are about 10. As you audition/interview they take notes on you. Then after everyone has auditioned a group of people sit down with all of the applications and decide first if you are cleared for academics/talent and then if you are they decide which of the acting studios you should be placed in. It makes me think of the sorting hat process in Harry Potter that's why I used the term sorting. Hope that helped!

      Hey! That would be NSB The New Studio on Broadway - they're our MT powerhouses. Though many of the other studios still go into some elements of musical theatre. I was a huge MT kid in high school and auditioned for New Studio but NYU has a great way of placing you in the studio that will help you grow in the areas your weakest in - for me that was 'simple' relationship focused straight plays - I could/can sing and dance - I just say that to hopefully help keep your mind open to all of the studios.

It is a movement based acting technique of sorts that helps you to deepen both your breath (your ability to take in deep full breaths in the midst of your body going through emotional/physical strain) and your ability to create a vivid imaginative life. You can look into it more by looking up the SCOT company or the CITI company - it's an incredible course that is offered to Atlantic second years.
