- Two Step-Orthodox vs Bar Dance/“Country Swing”
I put Country Swing in quotes because it’s not a particular dance style. It has become s catch phrase that could be any number of regional amateur dances that don’t have an actual basic step. Where people move around the floor or stationary versions of fancy moves that are largely off time and inconsiderate of the follow.
Two Step Intermediate Patterns
Zig Zag to Inside Spin to Pat a Cake
Rt to Rt Outside Spin to Lariat (Weave) position
Lariat to 1 anda half Outside Spin to Scissors
Pull through to Skater Position
Free Spin
Let me be clear.
I was the biggest bar dancer EVER!
I’m not a hater, although I sound like it.
There is nobody out there more excited than I am about the number of young people dancing Country today.
My frustration comes from the laziness that is Bar Dance and “Country Swing”. It’s Lazy and ultimately, unintelligent once the dancer has been exposed to actual dancing.
Is it fun?.. yesss!! It’s fun, for the time being. Is it fun to watch?.. for some, sure. People who have no dance knowledge think it’s pretty cool.
Do I want young people to not do it?.. I’m not even saying that. But there are a lot of you out there that have a true passion for dancing, possibly even becoming a teacher, or a pro dancer. Bar Dancing/“Country Swing” is for amateurs, only,PERIOD. It will never be considered a professional dance style, EVER!
Young Dancers today you should use it as a steppingstone to actual dancing and have fun with it.
Consider other dance styles around the world, or any sport. There’s a difference between what people just getting started look like and the pro level. Aspire to be better, don’t stop at the five moves, plus lifts and dips and ducks that you’re limited to in this style of dance.
And recognize the difference in how many patterns and concepts there are in any recognizable international dance style. The quality of movement, musicality, and connection. They are a work of art, Bar Dance/Country Swing, is not. Where’s the beat, where are your feet, where is the connection, where is the musicality outside of dipping the girl at the end of a musical phrase that you ignored, how does your partner feel?
Aspire to be better, YOU HAVE THE TALENT. That’s all I’m saying.
Win you an amateur belt buckle, and move on to an actual Dan style.
Two Step is a truly American tradition, American culture. And you, the younger generation are going to let it die because you want to do fancy moves without leaning hour to dance. It’s sad. I’m sad.
It’s hard to let go of west makes you feel cool, popular. So don’t. Keep your Bar Dance/Country Swing, but learn actual Two Step and West Coast Swing if you’re serious about dance in your future. You’ll be amazed what it will add to your Bar Dancing!!
There’s over 600 videos here for FREE, don’t be lazy.
I’m happy to answer any questions you might have, help you win at Bar Dancing, if you decide that you want to be a dancer, reach out.
I love y’all and I mean it, but I love Two Step more!
And remember, you can’t do anything I can’t, but I can do 100 times what you can.
Don’t forget.
Damon
Love your teaching, well explained techniques and the demo! Wish country 2 step will flourish in the ballroom everywhere as well!
Thank you for the compliments and for watching and commenting.
Great video as usual and you are 100% correct.
I'm guilty of dancing like I have 🌽 in my *$$. But that's because of the way I was taught. Lol.
( the instructor didn't make it cool or fun but i wanted to learn two step. )
I was just in Denver Colorado dancing at Grizzly Rose. All the young people do is " country swing " or line dance. They look like they are having a good time but only a few of us older couples were two stepping.
Thanks for the wonderful instruction and for keeping it relevant!
Thank you , I appreciate it! Keep up the good dancing..
Well said!
Thank you!!
I totally got the reference Damon! 😂
Thank goodness, I’m not the only one left 😝😝
I admit, it took me a minute to understand what you meant at the end of the video LOL
Wait, which part?
This part LOL: "There's nothing you can do that I can't do. I can only do things that you can't do." I took it to mean that you have experience and are very knowledgeable about the dances and that we shouldn't hesitate to ask for your guidance... maybe it's also a quote from a movie or TV show that I'm unaware of ;-) LOL. The wording just took me a minute to process when I first heard it LOL
It’s something I’ve started saying to bar dancers who won’t listen. In some alternate reality, they get it in their heads that what they’re doing is better or new or something. Outside of lifts, there’s not a move they can do that trained dancers can’t. It’s only the other way around.
Very good Damon.
Thank you, sir!
Go Pat! Great technique. And in socks!!!
In socks, sandals, boots, slippers, flippers.. whatever it takes 😂😂🙌🙌
THANK YOU!!!! I'm a dance teacher and people have asked me to teach them "country swing". ARGH!!
Say, “okay” and then teach them to actually dance.
Damon -- tells it and teaches it like it is!!
Thank you!
Lord you need to come to NC and have a workshop!!!!
I’d love to!
I wish you taught in my area! I like your recap videos a lot and think your classes would be fun to take!
I love to travel and spread the word! Let’s make it happen!
Damon, As along time dancer I totally agree with your teaching on this move. Well Done!!
Thank you, sir! I appreciate you watching and commenting.
appreciate the truth bomb ! time for someone to say it
Thank you! I figure if I don’t say, it might not get said. I appreciate your support 🙏🙏
Thank you for this rant, I agree
You’re welcome.
Don’t care for followers doing side together side. Doesn’t look cool. Jazz box for leaders was a style element that is gone. Your position for turn out of follower isn’t parallel which seems stylistic time. You are a wonderful teacher and I enjoy your lessons. Thoughts?
What he is calling "country swing", I call "country sling".
Where are you teaching these days?
We’re at Soundbox Studio for West Coast Mondays and Two Step Thursdays.
Weekly Westie Wednesdays are at Toque Event Space.
