Really nice to see another US auction house!
This is a terrific idea. It’s like sitting with a friend who is also interested in auctions, and having a one-sided chat. Appreciate you doing this
thank you for this post, going through my great grandfathers things, and found a Fran’s Heberlein violin, with a very Used case violin bow,
Sounds interesting. Always check bows as well. Some can be quite valuable.
Wow great news. Not far from me!
Yep, about time that another specialist auction house started in the US. I hope it goes well for them.
Love the channel, but confess the music not only leaves me cold but should be more classical.
PS there’s a new auction house in NY called PK Gallery. Offering some very high end stuff currently
PPS do you offer any opinions about whether a given item is legit?
I’m really interested in learning cues that indicate German French etc
Thanks for the support. I don't make so many videos any more, but if I decide to revamp the channel I will bear the music thing in mind. Oh wow thanks so much for the tip on the auction, that's brilliant. I shall add that to my list.
Feel free to send an email to musicalinstrumentinvestigator@gmail.com if you want me to look at something specific, but in terms of learning, Maestronet is a great place if you want to read up on how to recognise stuff. My knowledge is far from perfect, but I give it my best shot.
Would like you to make more comments. For instance, the Silvester bow had lots of brown streaks in the frog which indicates(?) lower quality?
In general yes, from the conversation I've had with bowmakers about ebony for frogs, historically the darkest wood with the least lines is the most desirable. These days people might pick wood like that for aesthetic reasons. Hard to say from the photos but it looks like a lower tier of bow. It also says it's silver mounted but I'm not sure from the photos and looking at the adjuster. Without seeing it in person it's hard to say.
I have never quite understood why they don't just START the bidding AT the "reserve." Or at the very least just reveal what the reserve is to begin with. What difference does it make?
I assume the initial bid is actually the reserve in this case. I didn't realise until after the video that actually the current bid price was also listed when there wasn't actually a bid. So I suspect as soon as there is a bid that is the reserve covered. I think they have a few things to work on with the layout/ terminology of the website, but looks promising for a first go.
