  • In this video, Mike identifies a comment found on the Internet, where the poster expressed concerns about the frequency of major failures (engines and gearboxes) increasing as the cars are ageing, and the associated repair bills for those failures being high. The poster comments that the extended warranty could be an answer to that risk .
    For the Aston Martin DB7, Classic Vanquish, Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Aston Martin DB9, Rapide, DBS, V12Vantage and new Aston Martin Vanquish models. The factory does not at present stock remade engines or gearboxes. The parts are either on long term back order or obsolete. Mike identifies that on a number of cars brought to Bamford Rose with engine problems which were under warranty directly after purchase, the dealership had to buy the car back, because there was no engine within the network to repair the car with.
    So purchasing an extended warranty might not be the answer to solving expensive repair bill items.
    Also, and regardless of repair bills and parts availability. Over a 5 year ownership experience covering about 3k Miles per year. It will cost approx. £12,500 on the extended warranty cover. When if the car is serviced and maintained properly, it’ll never need £12,500 to repair it spread over 5 years.
    For the second century Aston Martin cars, DB11, Mercedes-Benz V8 Vantage, DBX, DBS Superleggera and the new Aston Martin DB12, there surely are all replacement parts and engines available.
    After digesting the information in this video, you will be able to make an informed decision which type of maintenance and repair options is the best suited to look after your Aston Martin.

    You must be really busy with servicing if no engines and gearbox’s available on back order. Can’t wait to see how you get on with J EMs Dad DB9😊

    Have your own warranty, put a couple of quid in a account named Aston Warrenty. Timeless is a waste of money, they do everything to get out of it. Independent all the way for me . Good honest post Mike 👍🏼

    Some really bizarre parts on back order at the moment too - 22mm wheel nuts - back order since November/December last year. I did speak to Works who have said the current new production are currently in batch testing and should be available in December but not sure.

    I’m definitely cynical about warranty (house always wins) but very interested in the idea of preventative work the dealer just doesn’t do. I have an 11.14 DB9.2. 9th year service is still at the dealer but 10th might be at an independent.

    The V8 Engines were built in Cologne Germany at Ford plant, this production line has been closed some time ago. I don't think AM will open a new factory to build these old engines ....

    It’s very interesting. I’m sure it’s possible to buy parts if you’re prepared to have them produced (pistons, bearings shells etc) but it’s not going to be cheap. I’ve always thought it’s worth renewing fluids as soon as I buy a new car but I am concerned that these Astons, which are very much based on mass market components, which will last hundreds of thousands of miles in other daily drive vehicles are failing in these more specialised applications. Buyer beware.

    • @paulshepherd8295
      @paulshepherd8295 10 місяців тому

      I believe the items that are failing are peculiar to AM (valve shims and big end shells).

    • @dbx3197
      @dbx3197 10 місяців тому

      I accept I’m coming from a position of zero knowledge but I’m struggling to believe that shims and bearing shells are really a blocking point to rebuild these engines, surely they’re not unique sizes to AM or Jaguar (which I thought was the originator of the V8). If you’d said the block was a problem I’d be more inclined to accept. Anyway, I hope people find a way to repair these great cars.

      @dbx3197 I agree, but it seems to be down to people such as Bamford Rose to take the initiative and find the necessary parts, as AM are not interested. Their usual stance (if, say, a shim needed replacing) was to send out a complete new engine! They've now run out of engines and appear to have no interest in providing an alternative solution.

    Firstly, I'll own-up to being the author of the facebook comment that was used in this video, as it's a genuine concern that I have. I'd like to thank Mike for his response, and I'll definitely take his advice when i have to make the decision in about 6 months' time.
    Secondly, I had always seen Astons as cars that should last a long time, and to achieve that, the parts must be available. I've often been to car meets where there are numerous Astons from the 60s and 70s, so are these the lucky ones that haven't gone wrong, or is there still a supply of parts for those cars? If it's the latter, how can we be in a situation where you can get parts for a car made in 1965 but not one made in 2015?
    And finally, if the worst happens and my 4.7 V8 self destructs, are you (Mike) saying that you now have a facility up & running to rebuild it?

    • @petebungay953
      @petebungay953 10 місяців тому

      I can answer that one because BR have recently completed the rebuild of my 4.7 V8. It was not a quick process because of parts supply issues but the end result is superb.

    I thought car manufacturers were required to supply spare parts from launch, through the manufacturing period and for a reasonable time after? Given lifetime of these cars it seems pretty poor that AML ceased manufacture of major key components (esp given US market) so soon (or during?) life of certain models. Is there no requirement for them to support older models for X period? V8V was still in production 2017 but seems they may have stopped major part production sooner and launched run out models (AMR?) to use up the stock of components? Totally agree on preventative maintenance and more regular servicing. Dealers are on AMDSII and are fitters rather than mechanics anyway so a trusted Indy always better IMHO (irrespective of manufacturer).

      I don't think any of the V8s are available from AM. They were built in a small AM facility on Ford's massive Koln site. That closed when V8 production ceased, so there is now no production capability, and of course AM now get their engines from AMG.

    What would ne the biggest money pit and least reliable a sorted tvr cerbera or a 4.3 v8 vantage at the £30grand mark

    • @paulshepherd8295
      @paulshepherd8295 10 місяців тому +2

      Depends which engine is in the Cerb, and what state the chassis is in. If the chassis has already been refurbished and the engine is a V8, I'd say you're good to go. If the chassis hasn't been done, you'll need to assume it'll need doing. If it's got a Speed Six engine, check whether it's ever been rebuilt by a reputable specialist.
      In general terms, the Aston will cost more to run, though it feels like a step (or two) up in refinement and quality. However, a Cerb will destroy a 4.3 Vantage in a straight line, so it depends what you really want.
