  • The big brother to the legendary Daihatsu Hijet Mini Truck, the Hijet Cargo is the Mini-Van for the fam. A Japanese Kei Mini Van taking the soul of the well-loved mini-truck and enclosing it with a rear bench, the Hijet is an unlikely 4x4 off-roader with a lot to offer.
    Even less common than the Hijet Mini Truck, you won't see too many Hijets on the road but that makes this machine all the more fun. In this drive and walk-around we'll bring the full micro-van experience to you to learn what this 4x4 mini van brings to the table, to see if this quirky little car is worth the hassle.
    Feel free to ask me any questions you have, hope you enjoy!

    This K car is the typical “contractor car” in Japan. Plumbers, carpenters, landscapers, painters and many other tradies use it. The best is to see the customization that they so to the truck, installing shelves, containers and other stuff to carry all your tools and supplies. They can be like a whole office on wheels.!

    It's an extremely practical van in most of the developing world, Japan and Europe, maybe not that much in the U.S. or Canada. It might be difficult for you to imagine, but this van is used as an ambulance, public transport, or an SUV alternative to carry bigger families in many parts of the world.

      I’d say mainly from our longer roads and distances, I’d never recommend one of these to someone over say a Rav-4 on practicality if you had to own a single car, unless you had a very specific need! But that aside, it is a lot of fun and a great in-town work machine.

      In USA 80% of vehicles are considered light trucks so emission requirements are easier. 1975 rule to make cleaner cars that backfired and is why so many vehicles sold in US are unnecessarily large.

      In many countries there are slightly larger versions with 1-1.5L engines that have been based on extended Daihatsu Hijet, Mitsubishi Minicab and Suzuki Carry. Many of them are fine for longer distances, 18-24km per L and turbo models are as nimble as hot hatches to 100km/hr. Best of all you can park and navigate anywhere unlike the SUV and larger vans.

      Yeah they're good. I've lived in Japan over 20 years and have ahd a few Kei cars, including now. I have a Daihatsu Move. Kei cars are actually restricted by Japanese law in performance and shape when they build them. The reason they are boxed shape these days is because they have specific guidelines on size/dimensions as well as engine HP output. Most modern Kei cars are at the limit of that size.
      That being said, it is common enough for people here to tune them up... although technically illegally. They're not getting supercars or anything but they definitely become more practical for keeping up with traffic. Well North American traffic anyway. Things are a bit slower over here.

    • @PhilipBlank
      @PhilipBlank  10 місяців тому

      @@ZaWyvern that’s some excellent info! Info like this can be harder to find with me not reading Japanese or being able to see the rules there. It’s a great size though, makes since the class is regulated to keep them from growing too larger or too much power. Traffic is not something this is every used for! Mostly off-road with these tires.

    • @PhilipBlank
      @PhilipBlank  3 місяці тому

      That’s a maybe. No because it is sold for off road use, but there are many states and counties that will allow it to be plated. In general though it’s not good to be state hoping unless you know the rules and polices of where you’re going, definitely not highway legal!

    How is it legal to import before 25 years?

    • @PhilipBlank
      @PhilipBlank  11 місяців тому +4

      It is being imported under a different set of rules than the DOT’s DOT Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards which is the regulation setting the 25 year mark. This is being imported as equipment is the same class as say a tractor. It does not directly fit as a car and in many states can only be driven off road on your property. Some states/counties allow it to be registered as a mini-truck and then driven on the road or between two off road locations. Rules vary by state.
