I very much agree with your statement: I buy these boots for me and not for others since they won't be able to notice how expensive they are. This is exactly the thing you get when you are paying for tier 1. They are not a good value, BUT if they have something you like or you want to support the brand they can be a good buy. Thanks again for posting videos.
Man how much your collection has grown! I remember the first video of yours I saw was about a pair of Crockett & Jones adelaides (iirc). Now you've moved up to several pairs of G&G! I'm thinking about snagging my first pair of G&G, a split toe derby. BTW - how are the G&G shoe trees? I figured if they're nothing special I would just pick up several from Skoaktiebolaget.
They’re nice but I’m not buying more at £155.
These are sublime- another well done review. These are grail boots for me
Thanks
Love the video! I’ve had similar pair of Thorpes on order through their MTO for a few weeks now. From their website I wasn’t 100% sure the tan hatch grain was the right color, but after watching this I’m glad I chose it!
Awesome I hope they turn out great. Mto is always tricky because you create a vision.
Do you have the urban commando? Can you comment on that one vs the galway?
It's a bit of a myth that boots provide more ankle support. They provide warmth and reduce the amount of water and debris that gets in to your footwear but it is mostly the heel counter that provides support for the ankles and a well designed shoe can be equally good in that department.
Thanks for that.
I found it depends how you lace the boots, if laced up fairly snugly and they are higher than chukkas they can save your ankles - ask paratroopers!
True that. I’ve also broken my ankle and can feel the actual support of my mid boots. It reduces the pain of the plate.
I have a pair of Allen Edmonds Rainiers, which I really am enjoying. Totally different tier I realize but how might you compare them to the Thorpes?
I’ve tried in Rainer boots and they’re pretty nice. Not hand stitched apron or intricate like the Thorpe and the leather is quite a bit stiffer. It’s also a skin stitch toe, which is a few hours of work on each boot. As you said it’s a different tier though so instead of 1400 you’re paying less than 400. It’s a decent value at a sale price and you’re getting a lot of boot for your money. Leather quality is also a different level but I’ve always liked AE boots and if you like boots from the tier, it’s a good example. Hope that helps.
What's the other utah calf boot you're waiting for? EG or GG? I've recently ordered EG Cranleigh MTO in damson utah....
Actually Meermin is making a handwelted split toe boot for me in Utah. My first boot from them. Quickly followed by a cap toe in green shaved shell cordovan. I wasn’t aware, but am not surprised GG had Utah in their mto program, will have to check that out. I’ve been eyeing the cranleigh for some time. It’s a gorgeous boot. Is damson the color? I’m afraid I’m not familiar with that term. Thank you!
Off topic, but what would you pick between carmina or meermin Linea maestro if you were looking at a black cap toe Oxford?
Based on my experience with meermin linea maestro I’d chose the hand welted option. They really are fantastic shoes and at $100+ less than Carmina an absolute steal.
What in the world do you do for a day job? I think you spend more on shoes each month than i spend on my monthly rent! LOL
I’m in sales. It’s less than one nice watch a year, but no doubt it’s a ton.
