      They used to a long while back, then it was deemed unnecessary in favor of the "New School" after WW2. All or most of the "Hand Skills" have been phased out.

      You are trained to be a good little consumer in school. Not to know how to do things for yourself.

      Iron Mantis do dumbasses like you blame feminism for everything? In fact, basket weaving was considered a “women’s skill” in many cultures, yet here you are watching this.

    I wish we still had Ash. I hate to cut the white oak.

      We have since planted basket willows in response to the emerald ash borer.

      @@primitiveskills but I have upland not lowland. I can go harvest willows but they don't make trapper pack baskets.

    What type of Ash are you/they working with? Can White Ash be used?

    • @primitiveskills
      @primitiveskills  6 років тому +3

      Brown/Black Ash is preferred. If you use green or white ash you have to pound out the splints as soon as the tree hits the ground or the growth rings will become to tight to separate.

    How about showing how you got the individual strips so we can start at step #1. 🙄

      Harvesting the right tree, and working the growth rings loose is how we weed out the chaff from the serious students. Would you want a bunch of chair borne rangers in your multi-generationally cultivated forest hacking random trees down to learn the skills?
