I worked for the feds for 11 years. I took 4 years off. I was hired backed in July 1 as of title 21 with a 1 year probabation. I am hoping i make it off the one year probation
I worked for fed many yrs ago. I went through 3 furloughs. I requested to be an essential worker. If your working for a sub agency that works with the feds, but not a hired government agency, you can ask your boss to let you become an essential. I know, I started out this way, and I was eventually hired by the feds.
My understanding is that agencies are required to prioritize accommodating displaced employees from a reorg in other jobs that they qualify for. Why didn't he talk about that? Unfortunately, the hiring freeze makes such lateral moves more difficult but not impossible if people are leaving agencies - and plenty are. Finally, I would have appreciated a bit of empathy from this guy. He seemed to enjoy delivering this message a bit too much. What power do we have to fire employees of FED Smith who aren't putting government employees and retirees first? We need orgs like this one on our side. Career Federal employees and retirees are feeling a great deal of fear and stress right now. Tune in and provide support.
@elreytriton It may or may not be law, but it's fair employee change management practice. And it's how the government has worked for 50+ years. They can declare RIFs, but there's a process for that. And why would we want unpaid staff when they can do other useful work? That's a waste of taxpayer money. And as far as where I've been, I just retired a week ago from one of these agencies after almost 38 years of service. I'm proud of what we accomplished. But I'm not staying on the Titanic again. I wish all the folks who are sticking it out my very best. I can tell you that they're all frightened and overworked and exhausted and that's not good for anyone. They need our support. They've been the punching bags for politicians for too long, and they have nobody in their corner. The bureaucracy they have to wrestle with is mostly created by Congress and Administrations. DOGE should first focus on Congress. It would get the most bang for the buck there. And then the White House and its administration agencies. But it will likely chase the tail of the dog instead of looking in the mirror.
@angelot9842 I do know that. I'm pointing out where the efficiency is to be found. Right! OPM has all the information they need. They are the ones who remind the managers about ppl getting off probation. The whole asking for names thing seems like a big scare tactic when they already know who they will cut.
Most likely, many of those DEI employees were government employees with career tags, not probationary status. Gutting the federal government of young workers will create a whole, that the next administrations will have to spend year repairing.
Yep. Targeting the probationary population is not going to get the lay abouts and slag-offs that are milking the system. They are embedded. It’s going to hit a population of workers that is probably working its hardest to make a good impression because they are new and trying to get through their probation.
Any suggestions for a probationary employee on how to react to the differed resignation letter? So you think they will most likely be fired anyway if they don't take the offer to resign?
Or worse, if I'm a probationary employee who accepts the differed resignation, can I be fired before the resignation date and lose the pay/benefits promised by OPM?

Ask for the memo and read the specifics, it gives the exceptions in the text. HR Department may not have even figured that out yet, there was a very fast turnaround required. I think they should tell everyone whose name they turned in.
@ yes, but I was told I had to do another year of probation bc I moved agencies. My supervisor was already hoping I would move up to another position bc she loves my work performance after a year. If I have to leave, oh well and I will find something in the private sector. I haven’t never had a problem finding a job.
@ thanks! Yes, my sf50 says conditional status and veteran preference for RIF. I will ask about the tenure status tomorrow but I do remember asking about the 1 year probation and was told I had to complete it because I switched agencies.
Moved from one agency to another (in the same location) as career appointment, fully vested. Because it was only a few months ago, it IS a probationary time. Just got clarification from HR. They did 3 rounds of hiring to finally get the qualifications they were looking for. I’m very worried.
@@Jessrx1 I wish the best for you! It’s the unknown for us all 😓 I’m going to get clarification tomorrow bc I’ve been getting my SF50 worked on since getting to my new location. In addition, I’m still waiting for my leave to transfer.
Thing about government jobs is, if you’re coming in from the private sector, sometimes, you may not have the specialized experience or training the government requires, so you may only get a fraction of the pay you would get if you just stay in the private sector. I did this as a mid-career. I basically had to be entry level in the government. I left and took a position as a contractor and now I make 2.5 times more than I made as an entry level. Government jobs are only good if you get into them straight out of HS or college. If you’re mid-career, forget it. So, if the government needs people, they describe the job with all these super specific government-only requirements, like certifications. And nobody outside the government has those certifications. So, they hire contractors to find these people. And who are the only people who have these certifications? Ex-government people. They don’t get any fresh blood in because they won’t hire them.
You only serve 1 probationary period in the federal government. No matter how many new positions you take or agencies you switch. It’s on your SF50. Look through them you will find it in the comments of the 50 when you met it. Even if you switch jobs on that 50’in the comments it will list the dates of when your probationary period was completed.
I work for DHS and I know a few who recently got promoted and are very hard working individuals who have worked hard for their promotion and they are on the chopping block. Many of us in my field are in complete shock.
@haySamMartin92, That's conflating the two. TERM is a type of appointment. "...term appointment for a period of more than 1 year but not more than 4 years to positions where the need for an employee's services is not permanent." TERM appointments do not confer competitive status. In other words, the tenure status is "3" vs "1" or "2". Tenure is noted in box 24 on the SF-50. An employee can be terminated two years in if the need is no longer needed, i.e., the project is completed ahead of schedule, lack of further project funding, etc. 5 CFR Part 316 Subpart C Term Employment Probationary period is for those on a Career or Career-Conditional Appointment. 5 CFR Part 315 Subpart H Probation on Initial Appointment to a Competitive Position
This is hilarious I am on probationary period but been with government for 8 years. But because I was hired on as schedule A and moved from Forest Service to DOI. So it doesn’t make any sense to me. I have 10 months to go to be permanent.

bad move, stick with it. Disabled veterans, especially those with tenure, have protection in RIFS. People have to make their own decisions based on information made available to them, but take an little advice from a former government employee…. All these videos posted from ‘advisors’ are speculatory at best. There is no such thing as a deferred resignation program. Congress has not funded such a program, and OPM does not have the authority to make any such offer. OPM is not regulatory. Any offer must come from your agency personnel office, and it will not be vague like that Fork email. It will contain exact figures and dates and will be signed by someone who has the legal authority to make an offer. Interestingly enough, the fork in the road email is almost exactly like the one Musk sent to Twitter employees, and most didn’t get a dime. I understand the deadline is February 6th. You’re being pressured to make a serious decision. Resigning is a voluntary separation, and if you do that before getting an acceptable offer from a reputable office, you are on your own.

there is no rule of law anymore. where have you been?
@elreytriton It may or may not be law, but it's fair employee change management practice. And it's how the government has worked for 50+ years. They can declare RIFs, but there's a process for that. And why would we want unpaid staff when they can do other useful work? That's a waste of taxpayer money. And as far as where I've been, I just retired a week ago from one of these agencies after almost 38 years of service. I'm proud of what we accomplished. But I'm not staying on the Titanic again.

What about those who took a promotion and are in a probationary period for the new job? They may have tenure in gov but not in current position.
You only serve 1 probationary period in the federal government. No matter how many new positions you take or agencies you switch. It’s on your SF50. Interestingly enough, the fork in the road email is almost exactly like the one Musk sent to Twitter employees, and most didn’t get a dime. I understand the deadline is February 6th. Just so ya'll know, the whole country is excited to see all Federal employees fired. The gravy train is over.
lol! No, only the ignorant ones!

Ignorance is alive and well!

Bye probationaries! 😊
You’re a boomer, aren’t you?
Do you idiots think before you type?

I'm a veteran and I just got my government job over the summer so I'm still probationary. Why are you happy that I might lose my job?
@@NataliaTexDon't waste your time with that ignorant person.
