In the original, it was the Lumberjack who dropped his ax into the lake. Then a spirit appeared and suggested he dropped either a golden one, or a silver one. But the lumberjack comes clean about the one he dropped being made of iron, and as a reward for his honesty, he was granted all 3 axes!
