This song goes very deep. First, "schwarzer Mann" literally translated means black man, but the "schwarze Mann" is also the german version of the boogey man. When you listen to the song without the video, it seems to be simply about fear, maybe about the unknown in peticular. The video then gives it its depth as it shows typical german neighboursin their garden being happy and talking to each other.
But then over night, they go on the internet and get brainwashed (more or less literally) and the next day they don't trust each other anymore. And not just that, they build walls, surveil the others with cameras and even buy guns as protection against the others. In the mean time, Till, clearly mad, is taken to a podium and spreads his crazy believes. This is also reminsiscent of politicans giving speeches. The red cables take his message (or evil energy) to the others, you can even see the cables when they're looking at their computers. In their literal black and white they were manipulated by a maniac who sparked fear in them which makes them attack the others. But then, in the end, Till destroys the TV, the access to News, media, etc. and their views and the world around them literally becomes more colorful and diverse.
Finally, the band is eating Dickmanns in the end which were originally called Negerkuss (N**gerkiss), but got a new name a few years ago because of obvious reasons. Similarly, the kids game "Wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann" (Who's afraid of the black man (boogey man)) was critisied for its name, but i think it hasn't been changed yet. So they also draw attention to the racism part of the topic. Not only because of the term "schwarzer Mann", but also because racism is a common consequence of the fear that media and the internet spread. The song is not a critic of the internet as a whole though, it just draws attention on how easy it is to get influenced and radicalised on the internet and also by the media in general. It also touches on the fact that some politicians use this to gain power.
Very well stated.
Well said @MetroidJaeger it is the same in the Netherlands. This is not a racial but religious thing where dark and black are connected with the 'unspoken fear' and 'the Evil's' attributes. Sinterklaas (NL for Saint Nicolas) and Zwarte Piet (Black Peter) or the German Schwarzer Peter are remnants. And In Czechia in December Saint Nicholas is accompanied by a white Angel and black Devil (all played out by children) 'judging' children' behaviour and rewarding or punishing them.
Those are all remains of that time when religion added fear to the daily life.
Nah, it's a summary of the last two years, where practically 90% of the people have been radicalized against the 10% who won't fall for the spell, the government no longer needs direct surveillance when your neighbor would call the authorities on you for drinking a beer on your backyard...
Thank you. The translating of Rammstein always improves on their message and I'm at work so I didn't want to look for another Rammstein German analysis video.
Top analysis!
This Song is not about Anger, its about Fear.
"Who's Afraid of the Boogeyman" is a game for Children in Germany. One is the Boogeyman and stands on one side, the Others are normal People. The Boogeyman asks, "Who is afraid of the Boogyman?" The other Children shout back "No one" and the Boogeyman asks "What if he comes?" - Children: "Then we run!". Then the Boogeyman runs towards the children and tries to catch one. Whoever is caught is also a Boogeyman and so on.
In Germany they don't say boogeyman, they say "Schwarzer Mann" which means "Black Man".
That means the lyrics of Rammstein are ambiguous.
Basically, the lyrics mean "Who is afraid of the stranger, of the foreigner?" The black people sit behind the barbed wire because the other people are afraid of them.
The song is about people letting television and the internet scare them. They build walls, arm themselves and distrust their neighbors.
At the end of the video, the band eats "foam kisses". In Germany these used to be called "Negerküsse" which means "Negro Kisses".
This explanation is exactly what this song is about. Thanks for bringing into words, what was to hard for me. ;)
I guess the fear induced by the media and the internet does result in anger and violence, but yeah the main focus is fear.
Roberto Blanco has no Problem with the word "Neger".
And he is black.
Basically the song means: Who is afraid of the boogeyman?
So simple is that.
Yep. I have a limited understanding of German (in the process of learning it) and I am able to recognise a few words/sentences.
But the video alone doesn't need a translation.
The new album is fantastic. And this song is probably my favourite on the album. Just such a satisfying, industrial thump to it.
Same here. I feel like Angst doesn't get the love it deserves. To me it's giving that heavy industrial metal energy of early Rammstein.
Perfect description and I agree, it's the best song on the album.
@@lovez2eat oh i love the criticism its giving out. It is saying that what many people point out. But the masses ignore it and shield themselves to a point of no return
I like the industrial metal feel, especially at the beginning… makes me think it might be an homage to Einsterzende Neubauten (forerunners in the German industrial scene)
Oh yes
Till rules. Beth roars. Good reaction. Cheers from Sweden.
The emotion in Tills voice is always fantastic. Zeit from this album has got some beautiful understated vocals too
Also the emotion on their song Puppe.
Rammstein’s videos just keep getting better and better. I know they are old, I don’t want them to stop making music.
What does their age have to do with their importance? I doubt Dua Lipa will ever be as relevant because she is young and disposable.
@@gregharrison5479 First I don’t know who that is, second I never said their age had anything to do with their importance. Just said they are old, Till is almost 60, and they have been making music almost 30 years. Anyone with half a brain know they can’t make music forever.
@@undeadmonkey9122 Some people have a really hard time understanding basic english.
It happens a lot on youtube.
Deutschland. One of the most expensive videos ever, certainly worth while.
That “Angst” after the breakdown was one of the most spine-tingling noises I’ve ever heard.
i 100% feel exactly the same way!
Try Zeig Dich.
I think the best way to describe Rammstein as a whole from the music perspective, lyrically and visually is it makes you feel. This is the essence of why there music is so powerful.
Being an English speaker, and listening to Rammstein, there is an unfiltered level of emotion given to every song, that you take in and this primal part of your mind understands and captivates you to your core.
I like how you interpret Till's voice. He is vocally very strong and clear all at once and he has this Thing that I can't descibe either.
I REALLY love the sinistry this song gives out, and its even more so evidence in the music video.
me not
Till’s voice is incredible. It’s rich, deep and he can make himself sound very creepy with the rawness he has.
But what makes him especially great is his diction, even if you don’t know German you can still get the message.
I admire Till as a lyricist and love how he translates emotion into song.
Some songs already exist as poems, but it's a completely different experience when Till sings the lines.
Listen to the song Lügen. Till is full of emotions when singing that song.
Till rarely ever does full on vocals with distortion (i.e screaming) without pitch but when he does it's bone chilling. Aside from this track the most recent example i can think of with harsh vocals would be the chorus of Puppe, which is also a good song btw!
I love it when he does that!!!
And it’s a good thing that he he don’t do it that often… makes it more powerful
You exactly explain Tills character for us....such a unique beautiful art of actor/singer with a trilling powerful voice...ive never seen such a charismatic man❤
Great reaction and interpretation! You definitely should try reacting to Rammstein's "Zeit" - you will be really astonished how far Till Lindemann can go from what you heard in "Angst". One note - you should turn on auto-translated English subtitles, these explain the lyrics quite well - and believe me, in Rammstein lyrics are very, very important!
Also - prepare for another feast - "Deutschland". Full official version, in intro and outro 😁
Have a nice day!
Love the song Zeit. 🥰
Zeit is a really masterpice. The Video aswell
The auto translated subs are usually pretty horrible though, sadly. Probably better to just search for translation/intrrpretations afterwards. But I agree, the lyrics are a big part of the package. As are the music videos and the live shows, heck even the album package. Everything together creates an art collective, more than just a band.
I know what you mean when you say "I don't know what it is about his voice", I feel the same. Something makes it very captivating. He sounds like an expert storyteller. I feel like it is the combination of how deep, almost rumbling his voice is with his incredible clear and expressive diction (is that the word I am looking for?). Every syllable is filled with a certain emotion and yet extremely clear to hear and understand.
Also, if you speak German, the wording ist just very remarkable and heavily adds to the feeling of a captivating story being told.
This song deserves a Grammy. 🤘🇧🇷
Beth, your little corner gets as far as Bolivia, where i always watch your reactions. Thank you for that, i treasure real emotions such as yours like i really get to know you and share amazing music with you.
Please check the song "Zeit" . The voice and lyrics of Till so good and poetic, it is a masterpiece!!!!!
You should check out "Mein Herz brennt - Piano Version". On this song till really shows what he is capable of with his voice. And u can activate captions and auto translate in english btw.
saw them live for the first time 6 days ago in Düsseldorf and I really have no words to describe what I was able to experience there.
It was definitely the next level what they offered there, people already freaked out with the first song "Armee der Tristen" and it went on like that for 2 1/2 hours.
Lucky you!
Beth , as you say we all have our dark corner , it makes us human. I'm going to see them next week , I hear their live shows are something else !
Keep up the good work , I really enjoy yor videos.
Beth, you bring a lot of joy and wholesomeness to this place. Most times, you are my escape from the wincing talking heads. And for that, I thank you.
Let me give my thoughts on this:
1. The song is about how certain "leaders" and media want to scare people to control them. In the video, this is visualised by the red wires, computer screens and TV. Also, the entertainig industry is helping (commercials, online shopping), represented by the cheerleaders.
2. You can say that the world the people in this video are living in, is just black and white, no grey. It can be understood as a reference to the simple minded people who are for example voting for politicians who are telling them exactly this black/white view (WE are good, THEY are bad). Also, the band is dressed up as the stereotype of this kind of conservative people. Did you noticed that the world in the video changed to color when Till destroyed the TV?
3. "Der schwarze Mann" (The black man) is a german synonym for a creepy, ghost-like evil. As in the first verse of the song, children are often told "to obey, or else the black man will get you". It can be translated to boogey man in english, but like often, there is another meaning in this context. As said, the video is about leaders who are seedeing fear of anything foreign in peoples minds. So, the phrase "black man" can also be interpreted literally, namely refugees. In my opinion, it is a reference to the migration crisis in 2015 in Germany,. Or just remember the plans for a wall on the Mexican border...
Greetings from Germany!
I love your interpretation 👍 I must admit l did not notice the hints to the media which, of course, play an important role in evoking fear
Its basically The Bogeyman but in german
There's a Mountain in Germany named Schwarzer Mann
I love how you refer to rammstein's songs as stories because they are just that. Alot of bands have songs but rammstein's albums are books filled with short stories.
I love this song so much, it’s incredible! That roar he does 🤯 he doesn’t often really let loose like that so when he does it works so well
I have nothing but happy times and good memories with your channel! There’s a dark side to the internet, but you ain’t it, Beth! Thanks for doing this video, I just saw them in Texas, and it was a INTENSE show! 🔥
I love Rammstein and I never really understood how Lindemann works with his voice until I tried singing it. Thank you for the reaction!
Love this band great reaction as always. Come sunday i'll be seeing them live at coventry can't wait covid stopped it twice.
Another perfect reaction video from Beth! I really enjoy while I watching your reactions🙂 keep going to be natural and enjoyable 🙂😬
Yes!! You described his voice (roar) very well.
your reaction on "Deutschland" would be interesting! best with english subtitles.....there is too much going on in this masterpiece
It was great seeing the emotional journey you went on there, Beth. Fascination, horror, disgust, intrigue, awe, excitement... I don't think there's quite any band like Rammstein when it comes to the music and the visual package.
You are so awesome sauce! He's vulnerable showing that dark sense of self. Great song.
You are lovely! I love your reaction and analysis.
Hi Beth. I've really been enjoying the reaction videos. Stumbled upon them by accident (as with most UA-cam finds). You've reacted to a lot of the metal bands that I like and I think your info on how the singers produce their vocal styles is really good. I'll never be a vocalist but I appreciate vocals a lot more now. I watched your video on Kate Bush Wuthering Heights and just wondered if you had seen Dan Vasc's version of that song? This guy really goes for it and it would be great to know your technical explanations on how he's achieving the sound he had. Keep the reaction vids going, fantastic!
Your Channel is an example for the good side of the Internet.. it gives people entertainment and joy. And this is really Important. The Internet is useful and can be fun. But it also can be a dark place and a weapon.
Youve understood the meaning of the Song better than most Reactors without even understanding the lyrics. Props for that. Also your true love for music gets visible in your videos. Keep the great work up!
Greetings from germany!
This channel gives me a holiday away from that dark place 👌
I'm seeing them live on the 6th, can't wait!
Beth headbanging on the breakdown!. Beautiful. You know the music went completely through♡
I like your slow and clear speaking. I'm german and could fully understand you. Thank you :)
The brutal intensity and mercilessness of Rammstein + the raw honesty in Beth's reaction = perfection.
Just saw them in concert, they didn’t play this song but they are absolutely incredible live
I always love your reaction. Thank you.
Tills voice is just so good, I dont speak German either, but I can still tell there is so much emotion and great diction. Ultimately its his timbre that does it for me, its just great.
If I need more color in my life, I just have to watch you and your wise reactions. You understood the meaning without knowing the lyrics. Fantastic !
Love the leaning forward smashing instruments with the red screen part. The cheerleaders selling them guns & defenses was brilliant.
In México it's 6:41 am. But it doesn't matter because I love your content. I am a fan.
Greetings from Queretaro, Mexico
Their clips just keep getting better and better.
what a strong video, strong lyrics, strong thematics. wow. that does something to you indeed
You're little corner of the internet is most definitely happy positive time for me!!! 😃
My favorite "Angst reaction video" so far. You get engaged emotionally to the song, that make it spectacular. Such lovely 4:29. Thank you., ❤️
Nossa! Eu simplesmente simpatizei com essa garota! Ela conseguiu colocar em palavras certos sentimentos que tenho em relacao ao Till de forma perfeita.
E sim, moça, a gente sente algo, sim. O final... Ah, o final...
Terminei chorando com o final (na primeira vez).
the official video has english sub. check it out in settings! and as you say, the visual part is amazing (one of the best videos from Rammstein so far in my humble opinion) the music, Till's voice, meaning, everything!!!
Beth, you're such a ray of sunshine, it's hard to remember where the dark corners are.
Finally a new Rammstein reaction! You should really react to more of their songs, also songs of Till Lindemann's side projects. I very highly recommend you to react to Till Lindemann's duett with Zaz called "Le Jardin Des Larmes".
Yes, I would LOVE to see her reaction to their voices! Great suggestion.
When you see Till tied in the straight jacket It reminds me of the Fritz Lang films about Dr Mabuse. Great video about fear build by media leads to violence and isolation
I love that David Lynch feeling in the credits. It's just perfect and so deep.
Please Dicke Titten next.
Having seen this already say listen to Till's voice half way through the song when he yells "Angst!" it will give you shivers.
About time u reacted to more rammstein young lady
I love this thx
That may be the best description of Till's voice I've heard
Simply reading your face is an incredible reaction, and is probably the closest to my first time hearing it
Absolutely loved this!! You should react to Zeit
Zeit Beth, song and Video combined is pure art
Rammstein has always been one of those bands that have a superior talent for taking real world, present day issues and putting them in a perspective that is both understandable and theatrical to highlight the severity of the issue. Paired with Tills voice, which is able to capture all of the emotion with extreme accuracy, Rammstein has been and will continue to be one of my top 3 favorite bands of all time.
Ive been on the concert last saturday and it was the best concert ive ever experienced
you hit the nail on the head
Great vid beth ¡¡
Awesome reaction thanks 🙏
Please do more Rammstein you do it so well
As much as I love listening to the album, I do gotta say that Rammstein added *SO* much in the outro/credit rolls for the various tracks that they produced videos for. And this one hits hardest 🤘💔🤘
The yelled 'angst' always gives me goosebumps, it's such a powerful yell
Great Reaction. Greetings from Germany
Not a Rammstein aficionado, but his voice is full of this foreboding mood with dark threat just behind. It is indeed very engaging. Will have to sample some more.
Would love to see a reaction to the groups on The Stadium Tour. Co-headliners Def Leppard, and Motley Crue, along with Poison, and Joan Jett. Hell of a lot of history between them all. A lot of mixed phone footage out there at the moment but hopefully at some point (it’s a long tour) there will be some good recordings of all of them to compare.
I also read that in fearing something so much that you inadvertently become the thing you feared . Which does seem to fit with being fed fear, putting up walls and next thing you know your fighting with the neighbors and everyone . The fearful and paranoid masses become exactly that
Angst literally means fear. Fear often manifests itself as anger. This often leads to people lashing out at that which they fear. Leaders, media, and disinformation often exploit the fears of people by pointing to a "boogeyman" that may or may not be fabricated for the masses to direct said fear in order to control them. That's the meaning I was able to glean from this song/video.
Beth, your channel is nothing like those dark places on the internet. You bring pure light and love in the form of music education. Keep up the good work!
Excellent! Their new album is superb.
Rammstein videos of late have been event watching, I've not felt that since the days of Thriller and some other 80's classics!
Nice reaction. You should also listen to their song "Zeit". Another masterpiece!
Rammstein´s only getting better and better with age! Like a good whiskey!
Love your reaction Beth! Give us continentals a few more months and we´ll turn you into one of ours haha!
Good reaction to a great video. Til's voice is unique. There is only one Til... As for the lyrics, it's of no surprise they are always deep and meaningful. Til's dad was a well known German author and poet. In fact Til has published poetry himself I believe. So you could say its in his blood!
It's been so long since German Expressionism was in vogue that it seems new and fresh here. I like this "Angst" video, but if you really want your mind blown watch the classic silent movie "Metropolis," which has the most awesome Art Deco sets. I also like the Expressionist film "The Red Shoes," which has sound and color, and features beautiful ballet superimposed on all kinds of weird.
I love your voice beth
Thank you Jose!
So many german-only references missed but that's not a bad thing (Negerküsse). You have a great channel and good reactions.
Great music doesn't require language! It just speaks to your soul.!
Hello and greetings from gernany
I enjoy and love your content
I like your emotions and the way how you explain everything
And by the way i can improve my english 😁
He is a prophet of the trapping of this world. He warns of them all, and has the perfect sounds and theatrics to be that prophet.
Saw them live a few weeks back in Nijmegan
OMG How cool! My favourite band! Thank you. You should do "Zeit" from their newest album and "Mein Herz brennt" a bit older. Both are true masterpieces regarding lyrics and video! There also is a piano version of "Mein Herz brennt". It's sooooo good.
Great Reaction!
You should react to Rammlied ( Live at MSG ) from Rammstein, there Till has great singing and screaming.
I love this video their is so much depth and meaning behind it. A perfect example of the past 2 years with COVID-19, lock downs 🔐 Devision isolation mandates politics etc Rammstein know how to tell a story visually stunning especially to non speaking Germans which I find fascinating. Just remember (we are all inside the circle ⭕ ).👍❤️ 👁️🌎🪙🔋🖥️💉🔐🔫🥝🇳🇿.
With regards to covid, we didn't have a choice. And in actuality it should have been done sooner and stricter.
Food for thought: if everyone had stayed inside for 6 weeks, covid, flu and other illnesses are gone. Not forever, but a relative new virus like covid would hae gotten obliterated. Obviously it's undoable. But it's to show that by not doing it well, we have to accept all the problems....
Virusses don't care how we feel
Masterpiece.-
...and it's even more powerful, if you get the lyrics, too. As with - I guess - all Rammstein songs the lyrics are full of metaphors and ambiguities - it's even hard for native speakers to understand all the meanings. And what I find most amazing about Rammstein: They interpret Wagner's idea of Gesamtkunstwerk in a modern, contemporary sense.
Thanks Betty for your reaction(s): it's great to "listen" to music through your professional ears.
damn what a nice video thanks
Till Lindemann is officially 60 years old. Crush them all old man 😂
This is the best fckng reaction!! 😍
amazingly explained for todays day shit, all in one vid :)
