Final date of the Algernon Cadwallader Final Reunion Tour took place in Austin, Texas on Wednesday 11/22/23. A legendary night for fans of emo in Austin, Texas. We were lucky enough to catch what may be the final set ever from Algernon Cadwallader. Full 1 hour+ set video for all of you who may have missed out and/or want to relive that night! ❤️
“The genre defining term emo-revival is unfair to me. Sure, there were some kids in the early 2010s Philadelphia scene who wanted to make music that sounded like Cap’n Jazz and American Football, thus reviving a sound that had been morphed into commercial mall music throughout the previous decade and a half; but bands like Glocca Morra, Snowing, and Algernon Cadwallader didn’t just plagiarize the 90s genre- 2nd wave emo’s defining artists, Cap’n Jazz and American Football, had only 1 proper album to their names each. These bands laid the foundation for the infancy of a genre, but it’s bands like Algernon Cadwallder that took this foundation and built a house… or, more appropriately, dug underneath that foundation, and built a basement to play shows in.
It’s shaky, camcorder shot videos of 4th wave emo bands playing in basements on youtube that inspired me, and many other artists in the crowd of Algnernon’s first Austin show, to make and perform music. We were all in disbelief, this crowd of Algernon inspired artists, that the band we saw in those videos was in Mohawk playing their songs just as well as they did in those basement shows; in such disbelief that all we could do was smile, push, jump, sing along and let it take us over.
