This type of video is perfect for people like me just getting into repairs I would love to see more of this. You explain things so well I really learnt alot from your videos. Big thumbs up from me 🤩
This type of video is perfect for those people who have foolishly removed over a hundred components to find and short, and out of frustration started sniffing flux fumes to forget their mistake. lol
This type of video Phil, is fantastic for people, like myself, who don't fully understand all of the uses of a multimeter and who have an insatiable hunger, like myself lol, to learn. Fantastic video and please please do more on all aspects of multimeter usage. The way you explain things, in plain English, is just great listening. Thank you.
That's right mate, you need a diode mode value schematic to make sense of the values being read, unless you have an identical good board on your bench to compare the values to.
It would be great if you do more videos like these to understand what you are doing in your videos and it’s a good way to learn along the way. Liked this video a lot 🤙🏼
I know many people with qualifications who know very little when it comes to real life situations. Experience is everything, and “qualifies” you in the form of being able to do what’s needed to be done to do a job and see it through to the end…
Wow. Well explained. Thank you! 😃 I bought the same multimeter. Thanks for the link 👍I am a noob with repairs. I started just like you from simple repairs... Dual Sense controllers for PS5.
If you’re open to suggestions, a video like this covering how to use a multimeter or soldering specifically to console repair would be a HUGE help and I’m sure many folks would love to see you do it!
A video that goes into details on bench power supplies and what to look for to provide the best range in support diagnostics and repairs. I am thinking of taking a serious try at repairs and I am not sure if 15v -3 amps would be good enough or if I need a more expensive 30v - 5 amp model.
Thank you so much for this informative video I must say I see your passion in working on consoles I am have the same passion to revive console I love your format of this content. I was wondering can you teach your way of using a heating station to remove chips off of differint boards and temp settings especially thin layered boards
Good shit, phill, technician or not you still learn every day even if you are qualified. I am not as technical as yourself, far from it, but I have fixed a few TV's and stuff, controllers. I am a self-taught diy welder, builder, tv repair lol. I love ya, content mate I have watched a shit load of your videos at home with a broken ankle
With all those repairs you have made I consider you a qualified technician. Yes, you may not have the degree or the certification, but you certainly do have the experience. I really like the path you're taking and showing the Simplicity of starting to learn about how to repair equipment please continue.
Great video. I'd love more instructional videos with "basics" like that. Especially aimed at fault finding. Can you tell me what kind of probes you have on your multimeter. It seems I can't find any that have such long and small metal probes.
I somewhat follow your method here. I've never used Diode mode in this way prior, only across a diode looking for open in one direction and .5 in the other. So if you're looking for a short in diode mode what reading do you expect to see? (My Fluke has diode/continuity/tone combined. Leads shorted together reads 0 with a tone).
Thats a good point, I probably should have mentioned that in the video. Essentially a short will read a very low drop (0.000 or very close) since the leads at that point are essentially connected together sp the voltage drop is zero
Excellent, I watch now hundreds of videos now! To make things simple meters, we learned to read the flow of energy ( elections ). The resistors uses the electrons and diods to control how and witch the way the electrons can flow called doping.NPN and PNP doides
Diode mode, is to some of us a 'professional tool' you don't have to be a genius to use it, so hobbies(t) & alike Don't be afraid to try it, use it. Listen/Watch Phil! & other Techs use it and you'll find it will help contribute to the solution. Mistakes will be made but.. your only Human and not a machine. Don't let fails put you off get back on the horse. Phil's Methodology shown in this video' Measurement Objectives, Data Collection Processes, make him clearly stand out 🤓👍🏻
Good video Phil, but can you play it and check the sound as seems to be quite lot of white noise it could be my audio but not had it with your other video's and is a little distracting when you try to understand what your trying to say :) As for the noob thing with low independence has anyone done a board view explanation of the ps4 and switch as otherwise would it not be quite hard for people to learn this. and would you get the week phantom beep to let you know on all multi meters ?
So when measuring in diode mode with reverse polarity, the 0.033 is not voltage drop but only potential difference if i'm right. (?) Because current does not flow through capacitors. But then, why does it make sense to measure the capacitor for short with reverse polarity probes (in diode mode)?
Nice explaining is better you use your old multimeter back or isit a new one. For mosfet testing i prefere resistance mode and als on laptop board coils and current resistor mode also resistance mide. It is more accurate for those repair. Great explaining. Btw did you see the mail already mwith shematic and other great information i sent
Thanks mate, I personally don't see myself as one. To me an engineer is a board designer, a technicain is someone who performs technical diagnosis and repairs 😁
Normal resistance of 2700-3900 series are 0.2 - 0.47 ohms... By the way. Just for those who wonder if their quite recent GPU is shorted... Usually that's V-to-ground. And respective ICs. These heat up at 1V 2A.
A complete mess is a sign of a Highly Intelligent Person !!!! Just look on UA-cam on characteristics of Intelligent People !!!! I learnt all about repairing electrical stuff and engines by myself !!!! I learnt enough to fix about 90% of anything that goes wrong !!!! And that has been fantastic for saving money !!!! Also cooking nice meals is a Fantastic Way of saving money. !!!!
I've been tricking out my PS5 with a cool black case and led lights for the system and controller lol. Good explanation for diode mode on close to zero in the comments btw.
No such thing as a stupid question mate, if you know you know, otherwise you need to ask 😉 Most of the time the board will be marked (R=resistor, D=diode, C=capacitor, L=inductor etc) but if the board isn't marked you can usually tell based on what it's connected to or the package design. That usually comes with experience though as you work on more devices, you get used to what components are what. I could potentially make a video explaining how to identify different components 😉
@@TheCod3r video would be awesome! I know through hole components backwards but I stare at a SMD board and wonder were to start. I was looking at a water damaged SMD board and couldn't even follow the power rails or find the fuses 🤯

Knowing what mode to select when testing and what to expect from the circuit under test is important, interesting video. Thank You...

Thanks bud, I'll definitely do my best 😁
It was very well explained. Thank you. Looking forward for more explanations.

It's called theoretical PhD with no practical experience. heh
Thanks for the video its great for newcomers who own a multimeter

There's plenty in his video section
I think there is a playlist for soldering QFNs, HDMI replacements and trace repair
small topic but in grat details this is amazing
More of these videos please Phil :)
Thanks for this! Looking forward to more similar videos.

I've got a question what's the difference between a non-expensive and a expensive multimeter? is there a difference between them? and is it worth it?
If a multimeter has only diode mode and continuous mode separately, does it work the same?

Whats on the picture in the background
Soo if something shorted in diode mode it will show 0v drop? Am i right?
Exactly that yeah, or very very close since the leads are basically touching at that point and wouldn't have any drop (unless you had very long leads)
Only real reason we use diode mode is because it is faster.
Please speak slower and clearer for non native listeners. Thanks.
Use YOUR UA-cam settings to slow his speed. Change “Playback Speed” to .75x, then he can speak naturally. 👍
