    Do you recommend 3" or 4" pipe for 3x4 downspouts?

    • @steventhury8366

      I know I'm not Robert, but thinking it doesn't matter the size of downspout because same amount of water is running off roof regardless.

      I was wondering this as well. If a house has 3x4 downspouts its likely because the 2x3 wasnt enough to handle the water flow. will the 3 inch drain still be enough?

      We use 3" for everything that's a single downspout to pop-up emitter.

      Observe your downspouts during a HEAVY rain event. Water amount through the gutter is a function of roof area (assuming it's all making it into the gutter, not overflowing or backed up etc.) Many homes have "one size fits all" gutter and downspout sizes without regard to roof area each gutter is catching.
      If you have a 3x4 that never flows much water because it only services a small roof section go with 3". If water comes out of your 3x4 like a firehose, a 3" pipe is a risk best avoided.
      Also take note of how many downspouts you have per gutter. Do not assume it's correct. How many downspouts you need depends on roof area, gutter size/length, downspout size. Again, observe during a heavy rain event. Shorter gutter sections should normally only have 1 downspout. Maximize flow to mitigate problems. Excess downspouts that only ever trickle cost you more in buried pipe. That said, don't hesitate to add a downspout if needed.
      Removing downspouts can require re-hanging the gutter to recreate slope in the desired direction (gutters should not be perfectly horizontal.) I have one short porch gutter -- small roof area -- with 2 downspouts, only needs 1, and the gutter slopes toward the house. That's stupid. I will delete the downspout next to the house, seal its gutter hole and lean the gutter towards the other downspout.

    Canadian (Montreal, Quebec) listening very attentively. It's amazing how many landscapers I've spoken to who don't even know what I'm talking about when I say pop-up. Thank you for the info. I'm super happy to have found your Canadian site/distributor. Keep up the amazing content.

    When you dig the trenches do you dig slightly deeper underneath the catch basin (a shallow pit) to accommodate the bottom of the catch basin and to maintain proper slope with the pipes?

    I've just moved into a house a month ago and they didn't disclose all the flooding in the backyard. We've had tons of storms and rain washing in, and i'm fairly certain our yard is the lowest since it's flooding around all three sides of the property. I've been watching quite a bit of your videos (and some other channels) and I find that I just keep coming back (not so much for the other channels 😅). I've also got a few of your videos downloaded to my phone to refer back to. Thank you for posting the information. I guarantee I would screw up making a drainage system on my own without your channel/videos.

    I've been all over your channel the last month. Had landscapers bury one of my downspouts. No cleanout. Horseshoe. To a grate, not even a popup emitter. So, every time it rains, that little grate pops off (lots of leaves in my system). To top it off, they proudly told me they made it a french drain. And my area doesn't seem to have any contractors like you around. Likely going to have to fix this shit myself!

    Why is there drain fabric only under the catch basin and not around the run of the pipes themselves? Is it dependent on the type of soil they’re installed in?

    This might be a dumb question, but could you connect the corrugated pipe directly to the downspout cleanout for a "smoother" transition than the not quite a 90 elbow?

    I just installed this system on four downspouts two independent systems and 4 sediment traps. Any advise why the water is not draining down after rain storm? I did put pea stone with fabric and drilled the 5 holes on each trap. Thanks!

    • @FRENCHDRAINMAN
      @FRENCHDRAINMAN  3 місяці тому

      Must be clay soil. It doesn’t affect the way the catch basin works. It’s still going to catch all the sediment. It’s going to settle into the sediment trap, and the water is still going to flow because the top portion of the catch basin was designed to replace a section of the pipe, and it doesn’t obstruct the flow.

  • @Kittamaru

    Question - the sediment traps... How do you clean them if they are buried? Or do they not need it?

    • @Nidkidful
      @Nidkidful 3 місяці тому

      The green turf restrictors sit on the top of the ground and connect to the sediment traps.

    Mr drain man, im planning my french drain system currently. My home gutters are each connected to a clay storm drain pipe. What is your opinion on splicing into the clay pipe and draining my french drain straight into the city storm drain?
    It would save me trenching another 150’ and under sidewalks to get to a good daylight location

      As long as it’s in good condition. Most clay tile lines are very old and are experiencing some failure.
