This child has considerable skills. She is amazing!!!! What a talent???? If she stays with a few more years, she could do this to earn a living. Yes boys and girls she is that good!!!! You realize she has practiced a lot. I watched a video of her covering a Zeppelin song with Robert Plant watching. He was impressed. He said I know where she can get a good job....

Excellent reaction and critique - useful for those of us who are non-drummers. A few things that are unbelievably impressive about Yoyoka:
    * her taste in music is mature
    * she is brave as hell, taking on the work of world-class drummers
    * it feels like every song she does is one take, the first take
    * her power and stamina are astonishing
    * she is constantly and quickly improving
    * she finishes so cleanly, no hesitation, right into the drumstick wave
    * Yoyoka has a wonderful memory, she knows all the hits and changes - she is in control and knows exactly what she is doing as a drummer

This song sounds deceptively easy to play....until you try to! You definitely have to acquire (and practice, practice, practice) the knack of it. What gets me about Yoyoka is the sheer joy on her face as she plays. She is doing it for all the right reasons, and the sky isn't even the limit for her. What an inspiration to all of us drummers out there, young and old alike.

It's really cool to see her evolve. She's about to get her teen-muscles at this point, you can already see her gripping the sticks further back and getting a really strong hit out of them while getting great rebound and all that goodness. And the speed and control is glorious now. So sharp.

Yoyoka's innate gift is a given. The inherent flair and knack for knowing what works with any song she plays is the happy consequence for us.

One of the things that sets Yoyoka apart is her attention to detail. Those big cymbals on the downbeat with the toms just sound so Ginger Baker-ish.
Another cool thing about her is that despite her chops, it seems as though her aspiration is to be a band drummer. Whatever band she's covering, it seems as though she could just fill in for the entire gig if the drummer didn't show.

  • @iFoneVids

Clean, tight, timing, authoritative, dynamics, professional, technique, control, execution and impressive. More other superlatives could be said but that’s just typical Yoyoka and she’s still improving. She’s always in the pocket and if not she knows how to get back to it seamlessly. With this cover like in most cases, she always put her own spin to it and it makes the piece much more interesting (like the drum bass action). She elevates it i.e. ‘Steam’ cover.
Btw, her left foot/action is a habit of hers. I know someone said that Ginger does it too but Yoyoka does it all the time. Her left foot is always on the left pedal. She’s got great fundamentals. Not sure if it was taught to her but I won’t be surprise if it was just her innate sense of musicality. Like she knows how things should be done properly. I’ve seen her 6 yr old live gig with a live band, her hi hat technique is already at a high level. One thing I can add on that specific video was her total focus. That can’t be taught much less to a 6 yr old.
I don’t know if you accept non-patreon or non-PayPal requests but I would recommend you to see her cover of Char’s ‘Smokey’. I think she’s 7 or 8 yrs old. It’s a SMH moment. Thanks Andrew for the reaction. 👍🥁🤘🏼

My hypothesis, based partly on watching this channel's analysis of Yoyoka (because what do I know? I'm not a drummer) is that starting out at a very early age, she HAD to hit the drums as hard as she could to get the necessary sound. That becoming a habit then, she kept it up, gaining more control as she grew older, although she seems to have had a lot of control early on.

Ginger Baker was a really great and inventive drummer in his Cream , Blind Faith and his fusion group Ginger Baker's Air Force. He definitely influenced many drummers that started out in the early 70'ies and onward. His more "simple"-sounding drum parts are very effective as he plays the rhythms (like the verse in this song) as if he was playing a melody.
Regarding Yoyoka (what hasn't been said already?)... The part at 5:20 and 6:00 is just... G.O.A.T. She makes it look sooo easy (which for her it really is) do a.. uhm.. kick triplets-tom-snare fill? Those kickdrum triplets in that short little part under the tom+snare hits are just amazing. I have to rewind certain parts just to watch what she was doing since it went by so fast and I couldn't figure out what she did from just hearing it once. Then she adds those dynamic 16th note ~half-strength hits right before a full hit on the tom for instance and she doesn't move her arm, it's just a drumhead bounce with the second hit being harder. Simple but very effective and makes such a difference.

Originally her father did all the engineering, and he has always done a great job! But he has been teaching her for a while now, so who knows. She has actually FULLY produced two "One Girl Band" covers in the last two months (Vocals (in English), complete with 3 harmonies (if I'm using the correct term), keyboard, 3 guitars, and of course drums). This is the most recent one. She also includes the process in her vids. "Here, There And Everywhere - The Beatles / Covered by YOYOKA played all the instruments" ua-cam.com/video/ch_HipvEGq8/v-deo.html She also did a vid called よよかのドラム講座28 "叩いてみた動画のつくりかた" / ”YOYOKA” Drum course #28 "How to shooting the video of drum cover", where she explains the process in great detail, so she has been involved in the process for quite a while now.

Classic rock doesn’t get any more classic than Sunshine of Your Love; if you go back and watch an early Cream video of this song, Ginger Baker’s playing is powerful, but not particularly complex, as was the case with many early rock songs. As she has gotten older, Yoyoka has started to add some of her own embellishments to her covers, which in this case improves on the original in my opinion. 👍😎

Totally agree. I feel exactly the same way about all the classic rock songs. Love them, but she makes almost every one of them sound better, after the "Yoyoka Effect" is added. She has just got what it takes to make a song sound it's absolute best!

My personal favorite is her cover of Peter Gabriel's "Steam"... esp. through some Beyerdynamic DT 1770s. Watch her kicks starting around 2:44... music seems to flow through every cell in her body to the point of reaching an ecstatic state. What a staggering talent. Curious to get your thoughts, Andrew. Like many of her covers, her version of Steam is better than the original.

She turns into a volcano of groove at those points. And actually as I rewatch more of her older covers I can see it in others songs, yes Steam, Uptown Funk, even her RATM covers. And her recent one Levitating. I really think people are so caught up in her technical skill that they're not quite noticing how good she really is at building pure excitement.

    • @gizmotis
      @gizmotis 2 роки тому +5

she brings something to all her covers that didn't exist in them before, like here with changes to an all-time great song/drummer. her cover of levitating takes a fairly simple dance song groove to a place that most cover-ers (?) can't find with a flashlight and a map. it's impressive work for any drummer imo.

I've been following Yoyoka for almost two years now and thought that nothing she did could surprise me anymore, and then I heard her reincarnate Keith Moon and almost fell off my chair. There must be something in the water in Japan, which they only give to the girls. You need to check out Akane Hirose, who is the drummer of Band Maid, who in my opinion are the best rock band to have emerged in decades. I've just turned 60 and have seen most of the great rock acts perform live, but I can honestly say that Band Maid are one of the best live bands I've ever seen. Their songwriting, playing, and chemistry together is out of this world and they have completely reignited my love of rock music. If you haven't already reacted to one of their songs, or to Akane's drumming, I think you'll be amazed at how good they are. Here's a link to a live performance of Domination, recorded in Tokyo in February 2019. Cheers from the UK! ua-cam.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/v-deo.html

Another prodigy drummer. . . watch Avery Drummer Molek at 6 years old live on stage with Brad Paisley. The kid plays the Van Halen song, "Hot for Teacher" flawlessly! That song is challenging for even the most talented drummers and this little 6 year old smashes it! He's played on stage at just 5 years old with ACDC, KISS and other musicians. Any kid who is playing Tom Sawyer at the age of 7, deserves a shout out! Like Yoyoka, Avery is an amazing drummer as well.

I've watched the original and no disrespect to the great Ginger Baker but I like Yoyoka's drumming better. The change you referred to (I didn't take that as a negative comment) in the beginning is what her fans call the "Yoyoka Effect". She said she listens to and learns the original first, as played, then makes changes that she "feels" make the song better. In all fairness, most great drummers do that to their own songs as you know. She was advising popular local bands very early. According to one band member, who said Yoyoka (at age 6), was watching them rehearse in the studio, and said "I think it would be better if you played it this way". They tried it and said "You're right!". The girl just "Has It".

@@springy-2112 It's not just him, though, it's many of the legends. She is well on her way to being one of the best of all time. The greats are all just that GREAT! I never mean any disrespect to any of them. They all EARNED THEIR PLACE! I think Yoyoka is great, but sometimes I think, is it just me or is she really as great as people say. When I go back to the originals, it confirms just how great she is now and what her potential is. She is not over hyped like Nandi for example. No disrespect to her either, but she's more about showmanship, still very good at her craft. But Yoyoka is just humble and doesn't mess around. She just gets down to business and lets her skills speak for themselves. Too many well respected people, musicians, teachers, etc. in the industry have continually sat in awe of her talent!
