While your take on Rose is hella valid honestly the fact that she is a pessimist in a room of optimists is part of her appeal for me. Though more so the arc that she takes as a character. Through the comic she begins to lighten up, its subtle but by the end she is a much more positive person than where she started.
Not to mention, yes she had a loving parent, but she didn't believe momlondes goofy advances and took them as spit to the face. So living along in a dark dank house, where your deranged mother cleans the house and dawdles over your shit 6/yo drawings, of course you can see how she felt she was more trapped by a psycho, than appreciated and kept safe by a loving parent.
So maybe she looked into the deep dark spooky tenta-lores to assuage the mental darkness she had around her mom.

I don't think Rose is a pessimist at all personally I mean just look at her relationship with kanaya when kanaya felt lost and like there was no hope of reviving her species Rose was like "come with me and we'll figure this out together" that's like the opposite of pessimism her classpect can literally translate as "one who sees the path to Good Fortune" she's the one who upon hearing her session was doomed immediately started forming a plan to get her friends and herself out of the situation and secure victory Rose is incredibly optimistic
I think you are glossing over the fact that while Rose is highly rebellious at heart, she is capable of heroism. Remember that the suicide mission to "destroy" the green sun was her idea. Originally she was sacrificing her Dreamself, but her plan was unaltered when Jack Noir killed her and her dream self was used up. Rose is someone who definitely is needlessly contary, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have her own sense of morality.
For real. I just don't reciprocate their hatred for Rose. XvX

There's one singular part of this video that really bugged me. While I can't really argue with the statement "Rose is a pessimistic person and I prefer optomistic characters and optomistic stories" because that is a subjective opinion, I can argue with the assertion that Rose has a "loving mother" and that this makes her seem less reasonable for her fatalistic worldview. Because Mom Lalonde... Wasn't a very good mom.
Beta Roxy's persistent struggle with alcoholism is absolutely an issue. She may love Rose and she may shower Rose in gifts, but we as the audience have the benefit of knowing the alternate version of her. While there's no doubt in my mind that Beta Roxy loves her daughter to bits, we have to remember that Roxy uses her alcoholism as a coping mechanism to deal with the very depressing reality that an apocalypse is coming. Her behavior is impulsive and erratic, and it is because of this that Rose reasonably can't understand where her mother's emotions are even coming from because they are a result of her masking her depression. This is common for a lot of kids who have parents who struggle with substance abuse.
Think about how isolating it really was for Rose living in the middle of nowhere with only her Mom and cat (a cat who died early in her life) to talk to. Her only companion outside of her three online friends was a woman who behaved erratically, who kept herself distant from her own emotions, and who was prone to outbursts of affection but would just as quickly vanish into the shadows to be with her secrets and leave Rose utterly alone in that house. That must have been extremely isolating and dark for her, and would absolutely inform her trust issues and her impulse to carry on alone and understand every part of her reality, not to mention the fact that she sees things in such a dark way.
In conclusion I think that Rose's more grimdark worldview is in character and doesn't feel out of place at all considering the emotional neglect she had as a child, and I also feel it's unfair to think of her and her mother's relationship as inherently possitive or more possitive than other parental relationships in the Beta Kids' various homelives.

Your take is so good and well worded, it's not the first time I rewatch this video and reread this comment, but this time I felt the need to type this.
Some people tend to forget that Rose exists besides her relationship with Kanaya.
my fav pesterlog in hs is the one where rose is on her way to the green sun and dave is asleep in the dreambubbles with amnesia, and rose is purposefully keeping him in the dark so that he wont wake up and follow her. even tho her demeanor is kinda arronagnt, her main goal is still to prevent dave from killing himself with her,, like. she is a complex character, but selfishness and recklessness are not her most prominent traits! i love her.
Rose's mother was an alcoholic and didn't care for her basic physical and emotional needs for significant periods of time. They loved each other but neglect has real emotional impact.
Also Rose's angry sequence breaking/period of destructive isolation came from her frustration over the trolls, who seemed omniscient to their session in practice, telling her it was impossible to win. It is not 100%0pure pessimism and "grimdarkness" that motivated her, but a desire for control and agency-- she wants to know the most optimal way forward, and then to pursue it. If there is no optimal way, fuck the whole construct of the game. Homestuck primarily deals with themes of agency, especially before the Scratch, and Rose's arc is an integral facet of this theme.
Also I went to look at your Dirk video to see if you like him-- and you do. Believe me, I like Dirk too, and obviously you can like or dislike characters freely, but that surprised me. Dirk and Rose are similar people. They have a drive to control and influence, care about their friends but struggle to show it, both are reluctant to open up and force people to read between the lines, want the best outcome for them and their friends and have morally grey methods to get there (Dirk's being more actively antagonistic), etc. I would say that Dirk is more of a pessimist than Rose, though obviously YMMV.
Still, I can tell you put a ton of effort and brainpower into this series and it shows; kudos to you. This is the first I've watched, so I might delve into more.
I think you overvalued how good a parent Beta Roxy is. A lot of Rose's problems do come from her, like it or not. That's why Alpha Rose doesn't have them.
That and Gamzee mostly messed with the Beta kids giving each of them a mental disorders, directly or in directly. He does chuckle voodoo to make John draw clowns hence why there's so much clowns that decorates his home even though they disturb him. Jade insomnia besides Vriska testing if her psychic powers work on them. A piece of him in little Cal that was with Dave's abusive bro for his whole life along with other shit, Rose and her paranoia is also influenced by Gamzee messing her with her dreams.

I always liked Rose as a character, helping to ground everything in the alpha session with her cold logic and cynicism, made a nice contrast with John and Jade's optimism, Dave's aloofness, and the Trolls' fatalism, at least until the latter half of A5A2.
What you said in the beginning of the video is valid, you also have to remember that Rose was neglected growing up. Mom Lalonde was drunk all the time and gave Rose extravagant gifts instead of trying to spend time with her. While I don't know if this would be canon in HS, Rose says that Mom Lalonde doesn't cook often. It makes sense for Rose to be a bit rude and cynical but she does have a softer side. She goes along with John's pranks. When nepeta wants to talk to jaspers, she gives her laptop to Jaspers so the two can talk. She could definitely lighten up quite a bit, but she's still caring in her own way.

Her cat motif itself is telling since HS said many times "cats are known for doing whatever they want"

Rose is most definitely supposed to be a play on the edgy tween/teen stereotype, at least from what I've seen. You can even rattle off things you expect from the stereotype and end up with a lot of roses interests; Poetry, Lovecraft, Freud, etc.
Also, at least among my friends who were/are into Homestuck, I noticed that those who had an edgy phase while growing up tend to not like her as often as those who didn't.
On a side note, glad to know you also suffered from The Epilogues and ^2. I kind of dropped off the ^2 wagon (and also the fandom to an extent) after about 5 or so updates. It just didn't feel like Homestuck anymore like it had lost something crucial to itself after Hussie stopped writing for it. Not to say that I missed Hussie's writing (personally I found him to be a bit too flowery from time to time) it just that it's like the story lost a sense of heart or optimism. Like before the story could look in a mirror and say "things will get better" and be able to believe it, now... not so much.

I feel like saying the character with an alcoholic mother "had a good childhood" is a bit iffy. Maybe that's just me. Let me clarify that I'm in no way condemning mom Lalonde, Rose, or anyone who struggles with addiction; I know something like that is hard to overcome and I wish you safety. But kids in alcoholic/drug abuse homes often end up with massive psychological damage (for instance, I've become a lot more weary over the years to avoid adults who are currently sipping an alcoholic beverage no matter their BAC)

listen, i understand your take and honestly, it's valid asf, but i just can't ignore the fact that you blew over alot of her trauma. i think you misconstrued alot of what rose felt towards her mom. sure, mom lalonde may have had good intentions, but she was canonically a severe alcoholic. if you're only gaurdian is never sober and always puts the alcohol before you, then yeah, i would question their intentions as well.
on the topic of her personality, alot of what she does can be seen as masking. she obviously tries to appear smart and collected, but she isn't. she's just a thirteen-year-old girl. you can realate dave and rose's personalities very well too. Dave hides through his irony and cool guy persona while rose hides through her intelligence.

Rose is like me but to the left, i was just like her at 11. But i forced myself to appear positive, manic, and even less intelligent than i am so that people like me. Rose and i are like two sides of one coin in that way. I am falsely happy to have connections and she is truer to herself and has honest connections. I only show my true self online where people i know will likely not find it if i use tumblr or make a second account on anything else.

Rose's mom was an alcoholic?? She was not taken care of at all?? I know we all friggin' love Roxy, but she was a *terrible* mother pre-scratch! I understand that her disposition can be unpleasant and bit grating at times, but she genuinely did have problems. Momlonde neglected Rose, the gifts and presents were kind of the extent of the attention she gave her? Momlonde didn't feed Rose, check in on her, or really talk to her. That's why Rose is so mistrusting of when Momlonde did do things for her, like Jaspers' funeral or the wizards and gifts. Rose thought she was making fun of her, being passive aggressive and calling her childish. Momlonde swung between smothering and neglecting a lot!
I respect that Rose's character doesn't hit right for a lot of people, but please don't trivialize her traumas!

I like Rose and I see her as a complex character rather than just being a mean character because of being too serious(I forgot which conversations it was but she did show genuine signs of non-sarcastic humor in the web comic specially when interacting with John at the beginning-)

yeah same here! rose grew up in a really hard situation with an alcoholic mother and very few friends, and she just had a unique way of coping with it. she mightve come off as a little mean, but no one was ever truly *hurt* by her. even the other beta kids knew that she was just eccentric and lonely. of course ppl are allowed to dislike characters and all, but man it still makes me sad to see.
I think you really glossed over the fact that Rose was just as neglected as Dave;
Her Mom was always drunk and doing her experiments and only gave Rose gifts to "at least" show she cared, she didn't make food for Rose either and she had to kinda grew up resentful due to that neglect. Rose didn't hate her, just resented her and wishes they could have gotten closer to her and that is why she fell into alcoholism (which is something you missed as well when its the biggest part of her growth) to get some kind of closure. She also had Kanaya to help her after the Vriskagram and she cares a lot about her friends as well; she would go along with John's jokes, she did kinda helped Dave open up (even died with him and one their biggest growth together), and while there wasn't much interaction with Jade she also cared about her being her only girl friend.
Rose also has a lot Dirkisms in her so you could have gone that route instead of the "Rose cheated/didn't care about kanaya"

hey! what about Rose and her self destructive suicidal tendencies? I didn't like her as much when I was younger but now I can appreciate her because we shared the same mental issues. We just expressed ourselves differently. Like the way she tried to electrocute herself as a suicide threat during her STRIFE with MOM. And how she wanted to take on the GREEN SUN suicide mission by herself. Rose tosses herself into unnecessary danger and wrecks shit up on purpose. It would be okay if she got hurt because it'd be a consequence of HER actions and her actions alone. She wanted to die in the "haha jk... unless" way one may speak with their friends.That girl was depressed and suicidal. Suffering much in silence. Not to mention her slipping into substance abuse.
It is sometimes tiring putting up a happy cheery positive demeanor wherever you go. Sometimes you want to be moody and go a bit apeshit. Not that one is better than another but it is refreshing to see a character (especially a female character) allowed to just be like *that*.

maybe rose is just a depressed kid honestly... shes not my favourite by any means and hs2 somehow did her even dirtier what with her verbose times 1000000000 combo, but idk. like other commenters are saying i think she brings the group together in the same way her counterpart TT(dirk) does.
i think she really started to shine later in her appearances, like in her earliest interactions with kanaya. all that arc was really solid, and ironically i felt that her alcoholism and such in act 6 wasnt so out of field compared to various character changes in later homestuck. i guess she was the whole 'sometimes people dont really improve all that much and its okay' thing that the epilogues were trying to go for, but done pretty much right.
i mean, she does get a happy ending!
oh, and another thing people making fandom interpretations of her dont seem to get: rose would be a terrible mother and ESPECIALLY a bad mom in conjunction with kanaya. she seems like shed end up doing the whole absentee mom thing, or alternatively make really passive aggressive comments as if to prove to her kid that she's there and in control. but maybe thats an unfavourable take, i dunno

i can put into words why i like Rose, it's partly relating to her cynicism or simply enjoying her aesthetic the most out of the 4 beta kids. she's definetly the foil to John's optimism, being the pesimistic and calculated compared to John's optimism; and i enjoy this about her character. she isn't afraid to confront difficulty in her life and was willing to sacrifice her sanity to do so.

Hello Jen! Ok, brace yourself cuz this will be long and probably two comments. First off, The Rose situation. I’m completely understanding of dislike of Rose. At face value she’s easily the most underwhelming despite her lore hunting. But the real trick comes when you consider how and why a pessimistic snark machine like Rose hangs out with John, Dave and Jade. Much like Kanaya the other three beta kids bring out a piece of her she often saturates with her cold gothic spooky vibes (partly because she just like goth stuff but also because it influences her view of the world)
John is probably the most influential on Rose. He’s the quintessential carefree melody to her Skeptic sinister Sonnet. He absorbs what few useful nuggets of cynicism from her to amplify his view of the world. Which keeps him from behind too starry eyed for his own good. However, the far less story relevant impact John has on Rose is actually what makes her embrace her Dorky qualities. For a girl so serious and witty she still does things like deface her squiddle shirt which is arguably more childish than just wearing it. She took up knitting at his request and not only enjoys it but commits to using it as a weapon instead of looking for anything else (sure the plot wouldn’t allow her to pick a knife but still). This is getting too wordy. Anyway, John bolsters her inner freedom.
Then there’s Dave. He’s a bit easier since they have more in common. They tend to nurture maturity. Rose make it tough because of her sassing and psychoanalyzing, but so think she does this as a way of improving her ability to look at things objectively. I know for a fact the better you can understand and examine people the easier it is to get a hold of things you don’t know about yourself (one of the reasons I’m fond of Rose. Her least used supportive ability is something I’m quite good at.) Rose and Dave are similar enough in behavior that I suspect she’s learning how to be more honest with herself (something that slows up when the game starts since time shenanigans and witch stuff)
Then there’s Jade. Probably the least severe since They have their biggest leap (with the most attention and least noticeable results.) when Rose decides to embrace the light. She’s always been very kind to Jade overall. I’d say of the three shes the least smart Alec to Jade. Like John, Jade opens up Rose’s inner child. It’s pretty clear Jade has this “I’m mature and know about the real world” attitude about her despite being isolated from society with only an a very kind alcoholic mom. Jade chips away at that facade to reveal the less pessimistic but still readably skeptical person behind the curtain.
As handy as this interpretation is it ultimately gets the wind sucked from its sails by the fact that as a Seer, Rose has seen a lot of dark and disappointing events to sort of defuse the positive impact of her peers

What is wrong with people, and pessimists. Sometimes people just aren't bright balls of sunshine no matter what you do.
Rose's attitude can be explained by the recognition that she's the seer in a null session. There is no hope in playing by the rules so she breaks as many rules as she can. She also gets at least partial memories from the doomed timeline Davesprite came from. She's a grimdark character for good reason.
None of the human players have anything like good parents except Jane and briefly Jade. Dad Crocker is smothering, but for good reason in light of the assassination attempts. Bro is obviously abusive. Dad Egbert assaults his son with baked goods, which is less bad than assaulting him with a katana, but still abuse. Mom Lalonde is overindulgent. Bec is a dog. All the rest are dead. Everyone is messed up, some are just better at hiding it than others.

I hate this new direction of looking at the old tongue-in-cheek strife flashes as "abuse". Bro I can understand (Though even with him I feel it's obvious retroactiveness leaves a bad taste), but in what world is hitting someone in the face with pie(!) in a clearly telegraphed and not too rough way "abuse and assault"?

I always found Rose and Dave to be the pessimists in contrast to John and Jade. Dave's optimism in the early acts felt like part of his "cool guy" trauma shield to me at least. I feel like you gave Rose less slack than Dave in that regard, especially since Roxy wasn't a terrific parent either in the beta human session.
I get the love of a happy ending. Happy endings are wonderful. But you always need the one realist in the room to keep everyone grounded.
I love how PHIL’s voice echoes in the real world, just like Jen’s.
I’m loving the epilogues - the middle ones. I didn’t like the agonizingly slow pacing fall the first few provided, but I’m over halfway in both paths and they’re so compelling. To me, Rose is an amazing character. She’s sort of cares for her friends and wants them to succeed, but has moments of cold and distance that cause her to function as somewghat of a social outlier. You hate it, but she’s the character grounded in earth to me.
Why i love rose
She is clever, silly, and mysterious. She loves her friends, has an adorable and deep romance arc, and does a lot of plot advancement. Her grimdark arc is one of the coolest things in the series. Something people overlook about her is the generational trauma she suffers around her drinking. Theres so much you can do with that!
imagine you're a poetry writer and a time traveler comes to you to say your work will inspire a story about 2 snake skeletons wanting to fuck/kill each other while 32 kids play some weird game and become gods
Rose's Pessimism is what had me hooked to Vol 1 - 3. She is a good counterweight to the other beta kids.

Ultimately it would have ended the same, because Caliborn. However, the Condense could very well have succeeded on her plans and end up ruling Earth C. Hmm. Maybe that's why Jane turned evil. Fate/Caliborn's Will/Historical Inertial trying to correct for John's actions.

something that bugged me a bit (sorry to join the chorus !) is that rose.. isnt that Serious of a person. whilst she does take on a very refined demeanor she does indulge in a lot of humor with her friends (i found her and johns pesterlogs especially to be very silly) & indulged in the w-mustache silliness early on. rose certainly puts up a front but in the end is still clearly a teen, i guess? lol
Hmm, my personal theory is that quite a few of the issues Rose had as a child can be attributed to Gamzee. He had been using his powers to make all the Beta kids mentally unstable after all...now I'm wondering if it extended to the Guardians as well.

This reminds of an video on Simpsons characters, specifically Ms. Hoover, where the youtuber posited that a character who seemingly doesn't care about anything is hard to root for or feel sympathy towards, i can see that in your dislike of Rose.
Honestly I don't think Rose was all that "well taken care of". Rose is definitely a privileged child, she and her mom live in a nice house. But her mom is shown to be a struggling alcoholic, often passing out due to her addiction. While her mom is loving, she is also neglectful not out of maliciousness but because of her own problems. It seems more like Rose parents her mom more.
I don't think Rose is a pessimist at all personally I mean just look at her relationship with kanaya when kanaya felt lost and like there was no hope of reviving her species Rose was like "come with me and we'll figure this out together" that's like the opposite of pessimism her classpect can literally translate as "one who sees the path to Good Fortune" she's the one who upon hearing her session was doomed immediately started forming a plan to get her friends and herself out of the situation and secure victory Rose is incredibly optimistic

I might be. very late. and the only contribution I have isn't even something that's canon, as far as I'm aware, but I like the fact that Rose's curious nature (the entire.. answers for the sake of answers bit you mentioned when talking about her personality from the "grimdark" standpoint?), combined with her cat theme and the fact that, generally, her curiosity leads nowhere good? feels kinda like the phrase "curiosity killed the cat"...

I thought I was the only person who culdn't relate at all with Rose and felt apathy toward her character. Like I see her complexity and how she changes and develops through the story and I can appreciate that, but it makes me feel nothing. Glad to see I'm not the only one.

For anyone who is confused about how the doomed god tier players turned into the horror terrors this is my understanding. Throughout millions of eons the players can't die, but there bodies are still vulnerable to cell deterioration and cancer. what is the simplest appendage? that's right a tentacle as it is just an tube of muscle. so over countless millennia more and more cancerous growths form and the players resemble themselves less and less. as for their strange powers, a god tire player with all the time thinkable on their hands would probably do a lot of experimenting.
