He had this really fragile vocal style-this really, broken, close-up and intimate style. The name is kind of just an ode to Chet Baker and the mood of music he used to play-something I would like to at least attempt to play homage to in my own music.
Very few covers sound better than the original and for sure this is one of those rare instances when it does. Another of these rare events that immediately comes to my mind is Depeche Mode doing Bowie's Heroes.
He's not struggling. If you're vocally trained then you can tell he's on pitch. Every other interesting characteristic of his tone is what makes him unique. He's singing like himself, not like someone taught him to. And there's a time for both types of singers, people like you and people like him. Just don't judge him by how you would sing the song, cause he isn't going to do that. It's an excellent cover with a lot of soul
