  • On this segment of The Henry Ford’s Innovation Nation, Mo Rocca meets with chief curator Marc Greuther, to learn more about machines that prepared wool fibers to become yarn.
    Carding machines were the first machines to be perfected in wool production, and they accomplished the combing and untangling of wool before the spinning process could begin.
    Because carding machines mechanized the laborious hand process of straightening and combing wool fibers-an important step in preparing yarn -carding mills (like John Gunsolly’s 1850s mill, now in Greenfield Village), became extremely popular in 19th-century America.
