It is Sept 2022. I have NEVER HEARD of Russ Columbo and it seems strange that I haven't. I've been an appreciator of Bing for DECADES, but on this one I have to give it to Russ ! Russ is the winner !
Russ Columbo had a smoother more velvety voice over Bing Crosby. I should know because I was 19 years old when both of them were beginning their careers. Columbo was the best bet for stardom at that time...over Bing Crosby. I know...I was there. George Staudohar, 97 years old. Duluth, Minnesota
no way...bing starred in one movie in 1932, three in 1933 (even making the #7 most popular for '33). i know of no movies that russ was in, except "broadway through a keyhole" (34). probably equally popular on radio and records, tho, i don't really know. most people i've asked, who were around at the time, say bing was 'way more popular. pat bonner
@@kathleenbonner4146 That's it, wait until the guy is 104 to respond to him. I beg to differ on his behalf. By the time he died at 26 yo, Russ had 11 film credits to his name. Bing, who was five years his senior, had exactly 0 film credits at 26. Besides that, Russ had Carole Lombard as his twist. Sounds like Russ "...was the best bet for stardom at that time." Heck, with such a short career, the fact that he's still remembered well enough to be debated speaks to his fame. Finally, George's testimony is eyewitness, yours is hearsay.
Well, I'm not far behind you, George. This whole thing is a matter of personal taste and preference. It's about much more than who had the better voice. Much more, George. Russ was good looking Italian style and Bing was....well, he was Irish American, wasn't he? As a female I'd rather prefer Bing for many reasons. Russ does too many boo-boo-boo-boooos for me.
Columbo's voice was more romantic and he played a violin! Bing, was older with a more stronger voice! I'm partial to Russ's voice! It puts you in the mood for love! My grandmother loved Russ!! 💕🎻💕
It doesn't matter what he played, this is about voices and who is the better singer. If Colombo played any instrument he had to have had tuition, whereas Bing didn't. Just natural talent as far as I know. This is about preference and I prefer Bing's quality and tone. Your grandmother would have adored Russ Colombo, but he puts me to sleep.
They have different styles. Bing is more of a traditional singer where diction and "squillo" are important. Russ is a musician, a violin player; his phrasing and voice emission imitates an instrument achieving extreme smoothness and sound fusion.
I rather think that Colombo's tragic early death has had an influence on any decision about who was best or not. He does muffle his words, and even in this style, diction is important. He still doesn't cut it for me, and by heaven Bing did!
Whatever squillo is, I'm all for it. Colombo sounds like a singer trying to sound like a singer. Bing sounds just terrific to me. Also he looks good but that's just my choice in life. LOL
Your so wrong.. Russ... his voice is very limited..far more "Traditional" as you say vs bing. 1. crooning was a new thing so bringing in tradition you fail pretty bad... Crosby... at least in mainstream created "Crooning" and he was a Soprano.. with outside talents of that.. Russ Columbo not real name.. is far lacking in phrasing. wind and al together "croon"..... Bing played guitar, piano, Banjo, drums, bass, flute, harpsicord, violin, and just about you name it..
Mr. Staudohar, Thank you for sharing your memories of those good old days. Naturally, we concur with your opinion. We think very highly of Mr. Crosby as an artist and respect him for having been a pall bearer at Russ' funeral. We can only imagine how their rivalry might have played out over the years but fate intervened so we shall never know. If you're on Facebook, please LIKE The Russ Columbo Society page. You'll be the second eldest member... our dear friend Herb Jeffries will be 99 in Sept.
Sorry Bing, but Russ has stolen my heart with his smooth tone. So sad what happened to him…Godbless him 🙏😘💕💐🦋🦋🦋. ( and yes, I agree he would have had a great career if he’d lived on bless him)
Bing had as unique a sound in his voice As any singer who ever lived Russ also had this rare unique quality Russ was a great musician and brilliant hit songwriter Who wrote many standards. It's impossible to ask which of these amazing voices was better. It's like What tastes better Vanilla or chocolate It's personal taste....
A fun posting. I had read of Ross Columbo and it was terrific to hear his lovely baritone. Both are great. Bing is more gritty and manly. Ross is creamier and smooth. These singer battles are often media creations though. Sinatra V Crosby. Crosby V Vallee. Sinatra v. Johnny Ray. Fitzgerald v Vaughan or for that matter the Beatles V. the Rolling Stones. The artists often admire each other. It sells papers when people pick teams. How lucky we are to have the recordings of them all to enjoy.
I Like them both, It's a shame That Mr. Columbo died so young who knows wich way his career could of gone. I Love Mr. crosby's Movies and Christmas specials. I was in my early Teens When Crosby past away and never even heard of Columbo until today , They must of been friends if Mr. Crosby was Russ Columbo's was one of his pall bearers I like to think there crooning together in heaven. My Dad was only 1 when this was recorded, He was A Crosby Fan. ThanKs Dad to the introductions to classics.
They are two excellent singers,in these two recordings Bing Crosby's has a different orchestration then Russ Columbo's version, I don't know if it's the sound quality of the record or how they recorded Russ Columbo's voice, it's not as pronounced or clear but the vocal quality and his phrasing ,the emotion is tremendous.. we're just accustomed to Bing Crosby because he continued to record and we're used to his style, his is more Pop sounding with all the whistling , Russ's version is very romantic and beautiful
What beautifully talented vocalist! So difficult to decide which one was best? They were both best in their own talents! I love Columbo's silky smooth voice, and Bing's melodious waves as he dipped into bass, yet Columbo was able to hit the higher notes. Thank you for introducing me to Columbo. He of course was by far the better looking one! Still love Bing!
Unfortunately Mr.Columbo didn't live long enough to let his talents grow the way it should. But even if he did, he had to compete with Bing on the silver screen as well, as in vocals I think they are both excellent
A vocal expert once noted about the singer allowing the song to be sung through them. That is what I sensed with Columbo. Although I didn’t care for the couple minimal times he over phrased in dated quasi operatic style, I found his rendition haunting, unique, wistful and longing. Crosby’s rendition seemed less intimate and more performance oriented where my ears were commanded to stand at attention to notice. Columbo ‘s I could drift with in dreamlike musical blending. Crosby’s entertained. Thank you for posting this and making me think.
I have only just recently discovered Mr. Russ Columbo and I am so sorry I hadn't caught his sound earlier. I thought his rendition of the song was very heart felt and romantic. I love Mr. Bing Crosby's version but I thought his was much more of a type of vocal gymnastics without true feelings.
Anybody remember the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band's L.P. "Gorilla"?? I swear, Legs Larry Smith was channeling Columbo on his rendition of "I Left My Heart in San Fransisco".
More than similar....it's the exactly the same style but from two different deliveries. Bing, a bit harder in his approach and Russ, somewhat softer. But the song itself In either case, is a rich peace and certainly raises some bittersweet nostalgia.
One big difference were their ages when they recorded this song days apart from each other. Russ was 24! I think Bing had to be significantly older. People mature and Russ' voice became much more baritone in just a span of a few years after this recording. ❤
In 1931 Bing Crosby's voice was at his best. A very clear and distinct crooner. Nothing before or after him compares. Russ Columbo has a very pleasant voice, but really is not in the same class as Mr Crosby. Crosby's diction, enunciation and phrasing is perfect. There are others that come much closer to the perfection that was Bing Crosby, but Mr Columbo is not one of them. I would class Russ Columbo as an also ran.
Two different styles-both very, very pleasant to the ear. Bing didn't say, "This is my signature song," that moniker was applied or given to him over time. They were both friends, and I cannot say I don't like the Columbo version, even though this isn't my favorite Bing song by any stretch. I love Der Bingle, and have several CD's of Russ, too. You get no "voting" from me over who's version is supreme---I like them both, but they are totally different singers. (Oh, and recording 5 days before doesn't mean that Bing heard it and copied it, of course. They both had their own styles, and you can't get me in any dilemma about who is better, among Bing, Russ, Al Bowlly, Buddy Clark, etc.)
Different textures, nuances, both have their own individual styles, to make a comparison is to be subjective, for me, I'm appreciative that both men existed to rapture my hears, Bing, Russ, thank you both.
Wish I could see him when he sings this song. He was Carole Lombard's the greatest love. She couldn't take her eyes of him on the existing photos of them together.
I love Crosby's early years. The end of the twenties and the begining of the thirties are his shining hour for me. I discovered Columbo through YTB and I liked him very much from the first moment I heard him, but in this particular song Crosby is at his peak in his relaxed and warm style.
Bing was a better interpreter of a lyric. Russ may have been technically superior but, the singer should not overwhelm the lyric (whether it be bombastic or velvety smooth like Columbo). Crosby inspired Sinatra, Como & Bennett. He appealed to a popular audience better which is no doubt why he became a fine actor as well buttressed by his song interpretations. As Louis Armstrong said..."Bing's voice was like pouring gold out of a cup."
I just gotta put my 2 cents in.....Iv'e been singing professionally for just over 50 years....."Der Bingle" was the first crooner I latched on to.....For my taste Bing had the style, ease and suave far and beyond others.....Sinatra was quoted as saying that Bing was his big influence..... Even to this day, I find Bings singing influencing my own singing....Baba Booo !
It's important to note that Russ Colombo was a tenor in a trio and a violin player before he saw Bing Crosby at the Coconut Grove in 1930. There he saw the way Bing handled the microphone like an instrument and the technology allowed him to be more nuanced and personal in his style. Others saw him and imitated him. Russ Colombo was one of them. After seeing Bing, he became a baritone and copied his style.
This comparison between these two made me a bit curious. After listening to both on this post, I listened to a couple of Colombo's other recordings, he sounds as if he's forcing himself to sing in the lower baritone voice .
reading thru the comments, i'm surprised no one has said anything about the many genres of songs that bing could sing, even i would admit that the two were very close in crooning styles, but, and it's a big but, i can't fathom russ singing cowboy, or fast-paced, or semi-classical, or even religious, as bing so easily did them all.
Crosby himself credited Jack Kapp, Decca’s founder, with the diversity of songs and styles he recorded (Hawaiian, Western, traditional ballads, hit songs by the major Broadway composers) and said of Kapp, “I thought he was crazy, but I went along with what he asked me to sing.” Kapp had him remake some songs-e.g., “Home on the Range,” in which he urged Crosby to sing a key phrase at a slower tempo and more softly. The difference in the two recordings is remarkable.
I know this is a Russ Columbo site, and you want the viewer to vote for Columbo, but I can't help but give it to Bing! Bing's vocals are just so much crisper and more textured, and aside from that he has a greater Jazz feel, even on ballads like this. Don't get me wrong, I like Russ Columbo a lot, and I believe he deserves his star on the walk of fame for sure, but he's no Bing Crosby.
Bing's diction was better, whether or not each of them had had training (Bing hadn't). Bing definitely had the better voice. But, surely Rudy Vallee was the original crooner even though I don't like his rather thin style.
Sorry about seeming to be snarky about Bing and Russ. I like Sablon, the "French Crosby," who sounded amazing like Bing. Blue of the Night seems like a killer of a song to sing right, with long line phrasing and brutal breathe control required; an American Il Mio Tesoro. Listening to Russ and Bing singing Blue... I got to wondering which one of them might have cracked first.
Mr Columbo's rendition is very pleasant, much like a recital rendition. As others have noted, his timbre is certainly richer here. At this point in his life, Bing was paying the price for too much smoking, drinking and carousing. But Bing's version has so much more life and emotion, and a sophisticated, freer sense of rhythm and phrasing. "Like gold being poured from a cup", as Pops said. For me, no contest: Der Bingle by a mile. No surprise given my handle, eh? Thanks for posting!
Crosby's words are sung with clarity whereas Columbo seems to run out of breath in trying to prolong the notes. Columbo's is slower. We can compare but in the end it seems that personal taste decides it. Personally I prefer Crosby's version and his voice. The glissando is excellent.
Russ's version is more operatic, while Bing's version has jazz overtones. It's interesting to listen to the musical choices and influences by both musicians. Very sad that Columbo's career was cut short.
Crosby was by far the more versatile singer. He could sing any type of song, ballad, swing, jazz, and blues. Bowlly was in the same catagory. Columbo was a crooner and a great one but was very limited as a singer.
Russ Columbo had a sweeter more romantic sound Bing's voice was more powerful And not as romantic But without doubt one of histories most identifiable Voices L.Russell Brown I was named after Russ !!! My dad loved them both equally
bing, in a walk. johnny mercer said it best, columbo did not have crosby's original talent and would not have lasted like bing did. buddy rogers had about the same career as russ would have had, remember, as early as '33, bing was already in the top 10 list in movie popularity, along with his radio and records. after 31 & 32, russ was already fading. as to this song, both versions are great.. i always say bing should have had "echo in the valley" as his theme.
I enjoy everyone's comments. The two singers sound much alike. Bing at that time was in his tenor period and got more baritone -- and more "velvety" -- in the '40s and even more so later. A tougher comparison would have been Bing's later version of this song with Columbo. I think most would then agree that Bing's is better and not so "smeary" which is what I feel listening to Russ. Also, maybe Bing couldn't play the violin, but I bet he whistled better than Russ! Both good musicians.
There is no competition to the smooth yet energetic voice of Bing Crosby. Bing has the elegant touch of every true crooner. Russ Columbo has a sound that makes me want to hear more of Bing. Something gentle of Bing's voice makes me feel calm. His voice is pure serenity.
One problem with the Battle of the Baritones is that neither seems to be a baritone. Crosby was a bass or bass-baritone. Early in his career he sang only at the very top of his range. Later he descended. Columbo - the favorite of my first voice teacher - was more of a tenor. Crosby's actual key here is pretty low. I can sing along with it easily. Of course I'm a real bass and it sounds terrible but it's not too high.
I gotta go with Bing. Russ Columbo is smooth and downright good but Bing is clearer and gets on with it. At times it seamed to me Columbo was just gonna run outta gas. Also Bing CAN whistle but Columbo's mmmdadadi dadada uh someone just does not cut it for me.
Crosby wasnt a baritone so this video is off from the start, 2nd Columbo's range is at best 25% of Bing.. No tarnish on either .. Songs were pushed to many artist... Tell me which one croons to you?
This was Bing's song, and most people would say that no one ever sang it better. But that's unfair to Russ, who certainly had a wonderful voice, and created a collection of masterpieces before his untimely death. So, yes, Bing wins here; but give Russ a chance with his best dozen, and the result would probably be a public tie.
I'm sorry, but the answer I'm giving is not the one you wish to hear. I think Mr Columbo's recording of this song is dreary, slow and lacking passion. Mr Crosby's version is, for me (and most people) the definitive version, particularly since he co-wrote it. Just my opinion of course, but I guess the public at the time thought so too. I'm open to listening to other recordings, as I think Mr Colombo's voice would have been more suited to light classical, and / or Neapolitan songs. x
Columbo has just that edge over Crosby. More mellow tones and rounded performance. Was it the Artiste or just a better orchestration or higher quality recording? Other contributors have said that had he lived, he would have prevented Crosby from getting right to the top. - Probably correct but we shall never know.
I prefer Columbo's interpretation of this song. His creative use of vocalizing the violin part as an alternate hummed verse is unique in the annuals of popular american music. His rendtion has more feeling, more pathos tnan Crosby's. this is not to denigrate Crosby's version which is more optimistic, lighter...like a travelogue... a sunny more upbeat version. When I was very young...12-14 I loved Crosby's version but when I got into my 30's I preferred Columbo's. His death was a great loss.
Columbo every time. His voice is pure gold. A life tragically cut short.
I was named after Russ my father idolized him and Crosby.

Russ Columbo was the all-time greatest crooner, far beyond Crosby. His versatility of mood and sweetness nails it.

Al Bowlly was (IMHO) the only one who could hold a candle to Bing.

YEAH COLUMBO.
Well I'll be! Thanks Columbo!
Russ Columbo is best.
Russ Columbo, He sang this song with more feeling lovely velvety voice
Shame what happened to Russ so sad .
I love them both
Love both voices, bug Bing was more versatile. Russ sounds slightly muffled and not as clear as Bing. But both voices are easy to listen to.

No comparison, Russ was amazing and handsome
If Russ Columbo had lived, you would never have heard of Bing Crosby.
Bing's diction was better, whether or not each of them had had training (Bing hadn't). Bing definitely had the better voice. But, surely Rudy Vallee was the original crooner even though I don't like his rather thin style.
In an interview I conducted with Rudy Vallee in the mid-1970s, he made clear that it was Gene Austin who was the first “crooner.”
I like both of them very much but in my opinion no one can sing a Russ Columbo song the way Russ Columbo can. Russ wins with me!!!!
Wonderful único y me ha encantado escuchar, los dos únicos, pero mejor Russ Columbo 🎶
I prefer one Bing Crosby than a barrel of Russ Colombo. My vote goes to Bing all the way
Mr Columbo's rendition is very pleasant, much like a recital rendition.
Columbo was a crooner and a great one but was very limited as a singer.
crosbys voice quality was hard to beat in his early years but columbo was great also
@Adoria01 - Truer words were never spoken... I couldn't have said it better myself... and I'm a writer! ;-)
WHAT ABOUT MICHAEL HOLLIDAY
one thing is certain...Rudy Vallee is the Sanjay of 1931
Columbo was the better looking of the two for sure. As I’m more accustomed to Crosby’s voice and style I would vote for him.
Russ Columbo recorded first ,so how could he be copying Bing
but. Bing. wrote it. and it was his them
Russ Columbo had a sweeter more romantic sound
Bing's voice was more powerful
And not as romantic
But without doubt one of histories most identifiable
Voices
L.Russell Brown
I was named after Russ !!! My dad loved them both equally
Russ Columbo all the way
I wonder how Russ’ vocals would have matured had he lived. I always thought he would end up sounding like Vaughn Monroe.
bing, in a walk. johnny mercer said it best, columbo did not have crosby's original talent and would not have lasted like bing did. buddy rogers had about the same career as russ would have had, remember, as early as '33, bing was already in the top 10 list in movie popularity, along with his radio and records. after 31 & 32, russ was already fading. as to this song, both versions are great.. i always say bing should have had "echo in the valley" as his theme.
Bing is always terrific BUT....Russ wins this battle hands down. IMHO
I would vote for Bing, their both great, but I'd rather have Bing I guess.
I like Bing’s style better.
Bing's voice is much more personal and beautiful than Mr Colombo's.
There is no competition to the smooth yet energetic voice of Bing Crosby. Bing has the elegant touch of every true crooner. Russ Columbo has a sound that makes me want to hear more of Bing. Something gentle of Bing's voice makes me feel calm. His voice is pure serenity.
Bing!!!
Everyone talks about Crosby and Sinatra but leaves out Perry Como who i thought he had a much mellow voice.
John Baginski except he always put me to sleep.
@@davidreidenberg9941 como? second rate
At last! Yes, the great Perry Como.
I'm open to listening to other recordings, as I think Mr Colombo's voice would have been more suited to light classical, and / or Neapolitan songs. x
Crosby.s voice was much stronger no comparison
Russ Columbo is much more beautiful sounding and romantic for this song ,his phrasing is excellent.. I vote for Russ Columbo
Columbo has just that edge over Crosby. More mellow tones and rounded performance. Was it the Artiste or just a better orchestration or higher quality recording? Other contributors have said that had he lived, he would have prevented Crosby from getting right to the top. - Probably correct but we shall never know.
But Bing could whistle!
Sorry Bing
For this song, edge to Crosby,
sinatra doesent sing...............he talks. he not in the same class as bing.
Russ Columbo. He serenaded Carole Lombard
I believe Russ is better.
I think Bing.....He's very clear.....you hear every note and every word.....dreamy voice. Columbo's voice was lovely but his words are not clear.
