বাংলাদেশের সংগীতের কিংবদন্তি এই শিল্পী চলচ্চিত্র, পপ ও আধুনিক গানের জন্য বিখ্যাত। বাংলাদেশের বাইরে গজলশিল্পী হিসেবে দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার অন্যান্য দেশে তার বেশ সুনাম রয়েছে। পাঁচ দশকের দীর্ঘ সংগীতজীবনে ১৭ ভাষায় ১০ হাজারেরও বেশি গান করেছেন রুনা লায়লা। অর্জন করেছেন উপমহাদেশের কোটি মানুষের ভালোবাসা। বাংলা ছাড়া রুনা লায়লা উর্দু, হিন্দি আর ইংরেজি ভাষা জানেন। তবে বাংলা, হিন্দি, উর্দু, পাঞ্জাবি, সিন্ধি, গুজরাটি, পশতু, বেলুচি, আরবি, পারসিয়ান, মালয়, নেপালি, জাপানি, ইতালিয়ান, স্প্যানিশ, ফ্রেঞ্চ ও ইংরেজি ভাষায় গান করেছেন তিনি। বাংলা, উর্দু, হিন্দি, পাঞ্জাবি, সিন্ধি, গুজরাটি, বেলুচ, ফার্সি, আরবি, স্প্যানিশ, ফরাসি কিংবা ইংরেজি এমন অনেক ভাষার গান গেয়েছেন রুনা লায়লা। সুরকার নিসার বাজমির ১০টি করে তিন দিনে মোট ৩০টি গান রেকর্ডের পর রুনা লায়লা নাম লেখান গিনেস বুকে। ১৮টি ভাষায় গান গাওয়া, নিজের সংগীতজীবন নিয়ে নির্মিত ‘শিল্পী’ ছবিতে অভিনয় করা সব মিলিয়ে রুনা লায়লা উপমহাদেশের এক জীবন্ত কিংবদন্তি।
অনেকেই রুনা লায়লাকে খুব গম্ভীর ভাবেন। অথচ অনেক উঁচুতে দাঁড়িয়ে থেকেও খুব সহজ, সরল আর প্রাণবন্ত তিনি। নতুন কিংবা পুরনো কারও সঙ্গে কথা বলতে গেলে ঠোঁটের কোণে সহজ সরল হাসি লেগেই থাকে। রুনা লায়লা এমনই। তার চারপাশের মানুষগুলো যেন তার মুগ্ধতার আবেশে জড়িয়ে থাকেন।
