      She is singing Sanctus (the Gounod of course) before the throne of God now and when switching it up with Hes got the whole world in His hand, and this lovely spiritual as well.
      RIP Jessye divine

    I listen to this over and over, and it only gets more beautiful! What a remarkable world we live in that a retired teacher in rural Iowa can listen to such magnificent beauty without ever leaving her home! That would have saved my Great Grandmother and three of her daughters from the last pandemic. They were immigrants who got no further than New York City, but were deeply grateful for that. They were starving in the Old Country. They couldn't take another day of lockdown and walked to the Met and could afford standing room only. They put on soft cloth shoes when they arrived, so as to bother no one. Carried them in a homemade knitted bag. They listened to something wondrous and died three days later. I pray that their dreams are filled with that wonder on the other side. My great Grandfather never recovered from their sudden deaths. Grandma took care of him for the rest of his life. She learned to create terrific meals without the guidance of a Mother. Her Father would not eat out because her meals were better than anyone else could make. And they really were! She was only seven when the deaths occurred. What a hard life given for the pursuit of beauty. But she never left off in that pursuit. Most remarkable seamstress I ever knew, beautiful painter. Pretty remarkable Grandma as well. Life isn't easy for any of us. But it can be beautiful if we commit it to love. That was the greatest lesson she taught. How deeply blessed we are to hear such wonder! How deeply blessed! Thank you to whoever makes this possibe! Bless you! How you bless us all! Francis Clare Fischer

    Two phenomenal voices, two performers who defined a generation. My heart is broken to see Jessye go. What a blessing, though, to have heard her.

    One of the most beautiful songs/hymns of all time being sung by 2 of the most beautiful voices of all time. I had the pleasure of hearing William Dawson speak in chapel in college, and our chorus sang this song 1 year (maybe 2).
    Like so many other folks here, I remember seeing this concert when it was first broadcast. My choral director showed us a video of Ms. Norman once (in the 80s), and I remember the first time I heard her on the radio was on a show called "Sing for Joy". The show was produced by Concordia College or St. Olaf College in Minnesota. They played hymns that were more on the classical side, along with some spirituals (no contemporary cut & paste music that all sounds the same). I wish it still aired because it was grand, even on AM radio.
    Thanks be to God that He provided us the Balm every soul needs. Hear, love, and obey Him so you can access that Balm.

    Favorite part 3:11 then again at 3:55 when Ms. Battle's falsetto (head tone?) soars through Ms. Norman's foundation. Compliment each other perfectly!

      Rex Ivan Dela Cruz - I Iove that bit of harmony as well. Battle pretty much uses her head voice through this entire piece.

  • @amesavis

    What sets this duet apart is the amount of restraint both of them show, and the way they modify their timbre to focus on the pure beauty of the notes, the roundness of the sound, and the soft lullaby qualify of the melody. Then even at the end they sing that note in unison and it's beautiful, although Kathy holds it too long.

  • @gcmacyman

    My favorite interpretation of my favorite spiritual. Jessye ruled the entire concert, her dramatic voice is better suit for spirituals. Kathleen's very agile and light voice is beautiful but her demeanor is not sincere. Jessye is full on sincere and it shows. When you try too hard it shows, when you let it flow, it REALLY shows, thus, Jessye is the real deal. Overall a wonderful concert...

    • @shells500tutubo
      @shells500tutubo 5 років тому +3

      So much venom toward someone you may not even know, just heard about. No one person ruled that concert and there is no one type of voice suited for spirituals except that it be heavenly, which Battle's certainly is. An insincere demeanor? WTF?

    • @Broadwaybuff-pi1qg
      @Broadwaybuff-pi1qg Рік тому

      I heard Battle many times in recital, and I can assure you she held audiences in complete silence when she sang spirituals as encores, with many people wiping away tears at the stunning beauty and feeling. Her "Lord, how come me Here" is unequalled.
