Verhoeven has such an iconic vibrant visual style to his action films, almost like a pulp comic come to life. They're unmistakably his when you see them, ie: Total Recall and Robocop.
Besides the great John Williams, Steven Spielberg's music man for his movies, there's Basil Poledouris, who not only did this movie did Robocop, The Hunt For Red October, Conan The Barbarian, Red Dawn and the western mini series Lonesome Dove to mention a few.
He also did Free Willy as well. In fact I think Klaus Doldinger and Basil Poledouris had the same story of doing first a war movie and later a children movie. Doldinger did the score of Das Boot and Neverending Story, while Poledouris did The Hunt for Red October and Free Willy
Basil Poledouris (The Hunt for Red October, Red Dawn) is the genius behind that score! He is known for really epic visceral music, I think he is the best composer to emphasize the heroism theme. He and Paul Verhoeven also teamed up for RoboCop. That's probably my favorite of the three Verhoeven sci-fi films. Really epic music in that one too! 🙂🤘🎶
Jen, Casper Van Dien is a sidekick character in the amazing Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow, starred by Johnny Depp. The cast is incredible: Christina Ricci, Michael Gambon [Dumbledore], Christopher Walken, Christopher Lee [Dracula/Saruman/Count Dooku], Martin Landau, ... . The film was based on the book by Robert A. Heinlein. He was a real military bad-ass turned author. The score is by the late great Jerry Goldsmith. He was a legend. RIP to both of them.
Sorry to hear that it took a whole lot of effort to edit this one to get it posted. I am grateful you stuck with it and that you seemed to have a good time watching it, apart from some of the more gory scenes. I think this movie is a lot of fun and holds up quite well. I do believe I have seen the second one a couple of times and the third one once, but in my opinion they are quite bad compared to this one. I do not think they are 'channel' worthy, especially taking into consideration the amount of extra time it takes to edit. For other sci-fi movies I would recommend Dark City (1998), Independence Day (1996), Evolution (2001) and Sphere (1998). Really enjoyed your reaction to this movie!
Hehe, I knew there were a few Total Recall actors in this, but only just realised the General who was hiding in the cabinet was the rebel leader on Mars with the other dude attached to his belly.
This is a fun movie. Not as fun as Total Recall or Robocop, but still a great commentary on propaganda and how that can really amp up a large group of people. Great reaction, Jen!
Jen, your reaction to this was a blast! You were so animated, and not in a terrified way. I remember one film critic described this movie perfectly: "A lot better than it deserves to be." Thank you, Jen! This was one of your best reactions, ever!
This movie is just as awesome as it was the day it came out. Seeing this on the big screen with a bunch of people was an experience that needs to come back like immediately.
2:27 Mark! Jen, howdy! 🤠 Before coming here to see your reactions, I saw those of "R Knights" and they mentioned the lack of gloves in this disection scene! I didn't think of it before they mentioned it. 😕 I guess COVID-19 has made them very aware of the need for safety in such matters. 🤔 But when I was a boy in the early 1970s, only the veterinarian wore gloves! The rest of use used our bare hands! He didn't share his gloves with us. However, I didn't want to disect anything when I was in high school, so I avoided "Biology" as a class! But I don't recall the students who didn't avoid the class, using gloves either. 🤔 🤷♂️
I saw this movie at the theater when it was released and my name is Rico. When that teacher yelled RICO,it was so loud I just about hit the ceiling😂 Great reaction! You always make me smile😊
35:10 Mark! 4.8K Thumbs Up + Mine! 👍 You're welcome, and thanks! 😊 Notes: The movie is based on a novel by Robert A. Heinlen and this movie does have movie sequels and a series. 😊
This is your best reaction to date! The weekend this movie came out my family came to visit me over the weekend for my birthday (I lived away) and I got to pick the movie. It was this. Yes, my poor 83 yr old grandmother was subjected to this movie! In my defense I had no idea it was so gory. Favorite moment: the crazy laughing mom when the kids squish the bugs. Now you have to do the original “RoboCop” to finish the Verhoven trilogy.
People genuinely thought it was a "gung ho kill em all" movie back when it came out. Even the newscasts and Doogie Howser coming out dressed like a Nazi didn't clue them in that the movie is about how war mobilizes ordinary citizens into fascists. I think people got what it was doing after the Iraq War. I think if Starship Troopers was made in the 2000s instead of the 90s it would have been seen as way more on the nose. Verhoeven was way ahead of his time with this one.
Casper turns up in a supporting role in 'Sleepy Hollow', the Tim Burton modern take on Hammer Horror films. Well worth watching, Johnny Depp is the main guy playing a very quirky character, set in New England I think, late 1700s or thereabouts. Creepy and fun, bit gorey but in a cartooney way. Christopher Lee has a small part in it at the beginning, what a voice! Chills the blood, oh and it doesn't end well for poor old Casper!
The closed captions are great for this one - the troopers are apparently armed with fully automatic burritos and Klendathu is "an ugly planet, a pug planet"
Ah, yes! I remember watching coming out of the theater and saying, "What did we just see?!?" It was entertaining, gory, and thoroughly unlike Robert Heinlein's book! 😮 Glad you took a bit of a walk on the science fiction wild side, Jen! 😄
@@AlanYoungIII Back in the day that's how pulp Sci-fi films were made. Someone thought of a monster to put on the movie poster and based it around that. 😆
I really don't think Paul Verhoeven understood the book. He read a page of militarism and thought the whole thing was just fascists propaganda. This movie was kinda made in spite. Which is amazing but also a bit disappointing.
That's what you get when an anti fascist makes a movie from an arguably pro fascist book, i guess. Yes, I am fully aware that some people think the book isn't fascist because they limit the definition of fascism to the social theory rather than the militarisric implementation. I don't care. Edit: spelling Edit 2: i am very willing to accept arguments about the book being about fascism rather than being pro fascist, that's a valid point to make.
Hey, it's our god given right to invade the bugs' shitty desert planets that look completely useless for human colonization. They probably have, I dunno, oil or something.
@@batbrick3949 How long would a meteor have to fly even at light speed to reach across half a galaxy? No, the bugs didnt shoot the meteor; the human leaders just blamed it on them to start the war. Now, to be fair, its not proven or disproven in the movie, its just my personal interpretation.
@@batbrick3949 The film had mentuoned two things before thid: first, "Mormon extremists" had colonised a Klendathu himeworld, and presumably humans then defended them. When the asteroid was launched at the Buenos Aires, on the ship they mentioned it was coming out of the Klendathu Quarantine Zone - so the human military was already hemming them in and doing who knows what else (probably following on from the Mormon incident). We don't see why the war started, but we see enough to kow that the humans started it and were committing acts of aggression against the bugs and grossly underestimated them, and never considered a diplomatic solution - they immediately jumped to "the bug planet must be destroyed."
I wish I could go back and see this movie again for the first time. I went with my grandmother to see this movie and neither of us were expecting all the gore and guts. I remember seeing her wincing in the theater on multiple occasions.

at the time of release, the problem most audiences had was with the nudity. unisex showers were/are scandalous. and the fascism was taken at face value. the satire was lost in translation
@@alexsclewis The humans attacked the indigenous people of another place for no reason but colonizing (call it a reboot, if you will). The humans say the bugs sent an asteroid through the whole galaxy to destroy Earth. Let's analyze that: The speed of the asteroid was a few km/h (we see the it in the movie, it rammed Carmens ship). That would have taken millions of years from the bug world to Earth. Humans were not a threat at that time, so that is BS. Around the moon there is a ring of guns pointing into space not shooting the asteroid down? And I get that Carmens ship is off communication after hitting that asteroid, but although they know that it is heading towards Earth they do not turn around and warn them? They do have a Warp Drive... So, let's face it: The "asteroid attack" was staged and gave the military an excuse to attack the bugs. Why would the military want to do that, you ask? Because they lose grip on the people. Rico would have quit the military if not for the reason his home town was destroyed and he will most likely not have been the only one. People just joined the military to get citizen status for the benefits that come with it (watch the shower scene, it is all there). And if you need one last clue: Although Buenos Aires got destroyed on a regular day, interestingly enough Ricos teacher just "happened" to not be there and be able to immediately get a platoon of his own and a new arm? -Long story short: The humans are the invaders of bug territory without being provoked.
@@alexsclewis this was adapted from a book ( or book series, dunno haven't read it yet) and it's supposed to be satirical of Fascism, but this movie kinda fails in doing that, in my opinion, because the society looks more like a meritocracy than anything, and it only shows us "good stuff", never what kind of bad situations this kind of society/goverment creates. Again i haven't read the book so maybe it goes more in-depth in it, but looking at this movie face value nothing here looks to be "evil" or "bad".
Great idea with the "alert" thing instead of mentioning the video reaction each time, it reminds us of those videos and yet doesn't get old! I like it a lot
Basil is my third fave movie composer, but what he did for the Klendathu battle is the best example of music making epic visuals even more epic. My second fave soundtrack of his is Hunt for Red October.
13:52 Mark! Well, I don't feel like repeating here what I already wrote about at "R Knights" especially because I share to my "Facebook" account and repeating myself would be redundant there! For example, both women on the ship are in separate breast-themed episodes of "Seinfeld" and Patrick Muldoon once took a turn as "Austin Reed" on "Days of Our Lives". 😉 But your cute insert is something new to react to! 🎉 Ahem. Uh, I would replace "mob" with "stampede" in this context. 😳 A mob tends to attack Baron Frankenstein's castle while a stampede of people are running in fear from something or to something or they are otherwise excited. 🤔 Maybe "rush"? "Frenzied crowd"? A word that doesn't evoke lynching! 😮
No need to worry about having to do extra censoring - it doesn’t affect the fun of watching your reaction at all! And this was a LOT of fun! Can’t wait to see you react to Robocop now 😁 When Starship Troopers came out, critics hated it and seemed to take it pretty much at face value, missing all the obvious satire and thinking that the movie was just a big dumb action thing that didn’t realise how awful and cynical its portrayal of war was, and must’ve believed that all the fascist imagery was by accident. Joke’s on them, I guess! Nothing is by accident in a Paul Verhoeven film - he knows exactly what he’s doing, and this was his meditation on how war makes fascists of everyone involved. He was more qualified to speak of this than the critics, too, having grown up in Occupied Holland during the Second World War. The whole movie is a propaganda film, which is why all the leads are beautiful, everything is brightly lit, the sets are clean and the music is triumphant. The fun is watching the characters occasionally notice that things aren’t quite as nice as they seem, and the tragedy is that at the end the survivors are 100% complicit in the whole thing. Okay, film study over!
This movie is a satire, based on the 1959 Robert Heinlein novel, which proved to be controversial at the time. When Paul Verhoeven read the book, he stopped after reading two chapters, calling depressing and boring. When he made the film, he wanted to mock Nazism, Fascism, Communism and Totalitarianism. It drew negative Reviews by Critics when they accused of glorifying Nazism, when it was supposed to mock military propaganda. The film was a box office disappointment, making $122 million dollars against a $100 million dollar budget. It was nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to Titanic. It has sconce gained a cult following.
Not by me. I absolutely loathe this movie. It's the only movie I've ever seen in my entire life that I almost walked out on. I wasted $8.00 (not including popcorn and drink) on this. Anytime I and my kids were somewhere that sells DVD's, if they brought it to me to buy, I'd make them put it back. Happened enough times that it kinda became a running joke. Frankly, I'd celebrate if they decided to go all E.T. Atari game on all copies of it. I've seen and participated in debates about this so-called film, and no one has been able to convince me that it has any redeeming value whatsoever, except maybe what'shername's boobs. Satire or not, it has no resemblance to the original story, and should have been - at the very least - called something else. I might have liked it then, but calling it "Starship Troopers" means I expect it to somewhat resemble the book it's titled after. Hell, Keanu Reeves' "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and Tom Cruise's "War of the Worlds" are better adaptations of the source material, and I'm not a huge fan of those, either. Edit: I didn't watch Jen's reaction, but I'm a subscriber, so still "liked" it.
@@jodonnell64 The film is far from the best anti-war message I've seen and the adaptation from the book is laughable. However, to condemn Starship Troopers as having no "redeeming value whatsoever" baffles me.

I never would have figured you to have any tattoos. There were sequels, and some cg movies, but overall, they weren't good. I would recommend the second, it tries a little too hard to be Aliens, but it's a bad movie that's worth watching I think. As far a recommendations, I will always recommend Equilibrium with Christian Bale, it's a dystopian future movie that's very underrated, but very good.
If you are a reader of sci-fi I recommend the book Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein. The screen writers used approximately 2 chapters of a medium length novel when writing this movie. The book goes into much greater detail on the politics and organization of the society. For example anyone could serve and be a citizen, even those with physical or mental handicaps. They would just find a job you could do.EVen if it meant cleaning toilets for 6 years, you would still get your citizenship. Citizenship was required to vote, run for office, participate in public debates. It also made anything else easier you got basically vip access to licensing for business, permits for having children(lots of overpopulation issues) permits for colonial expansion etc etc. The whole system was set up after a revolution led by the military and veterans to oust the corporate elites and corrupt politicians. They set up a new service based republic in which the powers of the political process were strictly held in the hands of those willing to fight to defend those rights and everyone else was in another tier. Eventually they expanded the idea of service to include other forms of service beyond the military.... I know that seems like a lot, but that's all basically explained in the first chapter or two. Have fun

CONAN for the win! Although his score for the miniseries LONESOME DOVE may actually be his best.

Jen, Casper Van Dien is a sidekick character in the amazing Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow, starred by Johnny Depp.
The cast is incredible: Christina Ricci, Michael Gambon [Dumbledore], Christopher Walken, Christopher Lee [Dracula/Saruman/Count Dooku], Martin Landau, ... .
An absolute must for your Halloween 2023 Special.
Burton's Sleepy Hollow is a very fun film. I second that recommendation
👍got to agree I think Sleepy Hollow would make a great film for Jan to watch
Not just Count Dooku is there, Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) is at the party too :)
Rewatching " I'm doing my part " this has everything grossness , action , wisdom nugget " join every mob you see " , fun soundtrack and finding out Jen has two regrettable tattoos Do you want to know more ? Yes we all wanna know more Jen 😀 . This was gory , Bananas but a heck of a fun time cheers Jen 🔥💙🔥💙
"Is this going to be a gory movie?"
Verhoeven: "Yes."
You guys did good with this edit. It feels like a normal reaction that's just censored. Everyone that watches a reaction has already seen the movie. Censoring the gore doesn't spoil this at all. It's smartly censored for the YT wardens.
Thanks! ☺️👍
I took a date to this movie when it came out. I thought it was hilarious.
Oh, and the date... did not go well. 🤣
Great reaction Jen. ♥

I guess that's one way to quickly determine if they're "the one"!
Why was that? Did your date not like all of the graphic dismemberment?

One of the most underrated movies of the 90s. Some people just didn't get the sattire.
The only sequel worth watching is the last one, fully animated, with reasonably high graphics quality.
@@patrickkenyon2326 Good to know, I might have to check that one out then. Thanks!
Hehe, I knew there were a few Total Recall actors in this, but only just realised the General who was hiding in the cabinet was the rebel leader on Mars with the other dude attached to his belly.
I'm glad you were able to appreciate the satire while also enjoying the gung-ho action. In my opinion, that's the "right" way to watch it! 👍

MY START IN MOVIES! SOMEONE GET JEN TO COMPLY!
This is a fun movie. Not as fun as Total Recall or Robocop, but still a great commentary on propaganda and how that can really amp up a large group of people. Great reaction, Jen!
The translucent violin was a low key mvp.
Except that Ace plays 'Dixie' on it 😬
Just another layer of Verhoeven's satire.
Jen, your reaction to this was a blast! You were so animated, and not in a terrified way.
I remember one film critic described this movie perfectly: "A lot better than it deserves to be."
Thank you, Jen! This was one of your best reactions, ever!
I am a simple man, when people react to Starship Troopers, I have to watch it! :D
Funny I never noticed the bruises on her neck before! :D
The most unrealistic part of this movie is mobile infantry losing a fist fight to a flight crew leader 😂😂
This movie is just as awesome as it was the day it came out. Seeing this on the big screen with a bunch of people was an experience that needs to come back like immediately.
3:57 Mark! Haha! One of the guys over at "R Knights" made the same observation about "Harvard" still existing! 😮
Honestly underrated, quite a few popular quotes stem from this gem!
More than a few...Trust Me!
2:27 Mark!
“EXPLODE! YUUUUP!” Best Jen line ever! 😹😹😹😹
I saw this movie at the theater when it was released and my name is Rico. When that teacher yelled RICO,it was so loud I just about hit the ceiling😂 Great reaction! You always make me smile😊
Now I so want to hear the stories of the two regretful tattoos.
😂😂
35:10 Mark! 4.8K Thumbs Up + Mine! 👍 You're welcome, and thanks! 😊
Notes: The movie is based on a novel by Robert A.
Definitely want to see Robocop soon! ☺️👍
This came out when I was waiting to enter the US Air Force. At least I knew it wasn't going to be like that. Fun movie.
Funny since I saw the film Basic 2 weeks before I went into the Army 😁
Casper turns up in a supporting role in 'Sleepy Hollow', the Tim Burton modern take on Hammer Horror films. Well worth watching, Johnny Depp is the main guy playing a very quirky character, set in New England I think, late 1700s or thereabouts. Creepy and fun, bit gorey but in a cartooney way. Christopher Lee has a small part in it at the beginning, what a voice! Chills the blood, oh and it doesn't end well for poor old Casper!
Most people don't realize this movie is satire right away. I applaud you for recognizing it and not just seeing a military bravado action movie.
So much fun! ☺️👍
The best movie based on the back cover of a book ever made. :D
Edit: spelling
Edit 2: i am very willing to accept arguments about the book being about fascism rather than being pro fascist, that's a valid point to make.
Remember Carmen (Denise Richards); you're gonna meet her again in James Bond. 😀
I do think it's telling that we never see the bugs invade a human world, just several instances of humans invading bug worlds
Hey, it's our god given right to invade the bugs' shitty desert planets that look completely useless for human colonization. They probably have, I dunno, oil or something.
The bugs launched asteroids at Earth, which destroyed entire cities. That was a WMD attack before the Klendathu invasion.
@@batbrick3949 @BatBrick39 It is at least implied that Buenos Aires might be an inside job
@@batbrick3949
How long would a meteor have to fly even at light speed to reach across half a galaxy?
You probably watch rest of Paul Verhoeven movies, Robocop, Basic Instinct and Hallow Man. He has an interesting filmography.

at the time of release, the problem most audiences had was with the nudity. unisex showers were/are scandalous. and the fascism was taken at face value. the satire was lost in translation
Was lost to me as a kid when I saw it. The satire is much more obvious to Americans Post-9/11.

@@Cheepchipsable how were the humans in this film in the wrong, exactly?

No need to worry about having to do extra censoring - it doesn’t affect the fun of watching your reaction at all! And this was a LOT of fun! Can’t wait to see you react to Robocop now 😁
When Starship Troopers came out, critics hated it and seemed to take it pretty much at face value, missing all the obvious satire and thinking that the movie was just a big dumb action thing that didn’t realise how awful and cynical its portrayal of war was, and must’ve believed that all the fascist imagery was by accident.

"Offensive Things Exist" might be my new favorite wisdom nugget 🤓
If you enjoyed the satirical tone, I'd recommend Robocop (1987).
Have fun
