  • In Episode 5 of #DisastrousBugs, we will see how a software bug led to the early release of 3,200 criminals over 13 years. Some of them reverted to horrific crimes, including murder. Discover how a tiny glitch in advanced systems can cause major disasters.
The bug originated from a law passed in 2002 by the Washington Supreme Court granting sentence reductions for good behavior, calculated by OMNI software developed by IBM & Sierra Systems. The issue came to light in 2012 when a criminal, jailed for a brutal stabbing, was released prematurely. The software had been incorrectly awarding too many credits, a problem unnoticed for 13 years. Some released criminals reoffended, including a case involving the murder of a 17-year-old boy.
