Canoeing the McCormick Wilderness Part 1 - Getting in

  • I have always wanted to explore the McCormick Wilderness but never had to chance to. With the Canadian border being closed I thought this was a good a time as ever. So my daughter Kalie and I decided to not only explore the area but to also bring canoes in which is very rarely done. We were in search of remoteness and solitude of which we found both in abundance. In this first part of the video series we put in the effort to actually portage and paddle a canoe back to our campsite.
Lots of great info on the area:

In the 70s we had boats hidden out there on different lakes until the forest service found them ! Thanks for the memories

Very cool! I am hoping to get out there again and portage into some more lakes.

It great to see people who usually go over into Canada doing different types of trips this year. I did Minnesota instead of Algonquin for my spring trip and am going back for 10 days starting Saturday

My first thought was the Boundary waters but heard horror stories about how busy it was this year so thought I would go here for the remoteness. Have fun on your trip!

Great adventure! For my solo last year it was a toss up between McCormick and Trap Hills. I chose Trap Hills, which was excellent. Now after watching this video I know where to head next!

Bulldog Lake site is amazing. The peninsula in Lake Margaret looks promising too.

@@Mrjrose01 The site on Bulldog was awesome. Spoiler alert, I was never able to get over to Margaret due to thunderstorms but I saw a couple posts online that mentioned a nice campsite up on a bluff and that it was the most beautiful lake there. Next time I am there I AM going to make it to that lake!

@@schultzoutdoors8799 I actually did make the trip to Bulldog last October. Arrived on a Saturday afternoon, did a solo bushwhack in the fading light to that same site on Bulldog. Maps don't reveal how swampy it actually is in the forest there, I was stressing massively since I had to backtrack many times as the sun was dropping. Took me 2 hrs from White Deer Lake.
Planning a return in the next couple of months for more adventure!

@@Mrjrose01 Very cool! Hope the site was just as nice as I'd left it. Although I doubt the wood I left was still there. I hear you about being in unfamiliar woods as the sun is going down, very unsettling. Glad it turned out good. I'm hoping to get back up there this year yet as well to finally canoe into Margaret.
