- Ukraine has destroyed a strategically important bridge over the river Seym, as it continues its incursion into Russia's Kursk region.
Russian officials have been quoted as saying the operation near the town of Glushkovo has cut off part of the local district.
The bridge was used by the Kremlin to supply its troops and its destruction could hamper their efforts.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukrainian troops were strengthening their positions in Kursk, and called the captured territories an exchange fund, implying they could be swapped for Ukrainian regions occupied by Moscow.

Ukraine isn't keeping what it's taken, so it's a buffer zone they want. Russian artillery and spotters will be much further back from the Ukrainian positions. They'd have to use more aircraft for intelligence, but using more aircraft increases aircraft loses. Satellites may help Russia but can't destroy targets with satellites. All an embarrassment for Putin.

The Ukrainians aren’t holding Russian territories but forcing Russia to commit their reserve forces away from the front lines in Ukraine as they quickly take Russian territory. Russia’s military supply, and combat troops are stretched along a wide front and mostly relies on railroads with their military trucks in short supply, whereas the Ukrainian supply routes are shorter. The Ukrainians are doing a diversional front into Russia to force the Russians to move troops and supplies away from the front lines in Eastern Ukraine.
But there have been statements that they want to hold the territory which worries me a little bit because they will be butchered by Russian army when they turn around to defend their territory

There are 3 bridges, this is the second one. The aim is force Russia to evacuate the region connected by the bridges but also restrict the escape route.
This may force Russians to leave behind materiel, which Ukraine can later use, and/or cause disarray within the Russian ranks. With one bridge, the evacuating Russian forces become sitting ducks and their plans to reinforce other fronts becomes severely limited.
By destroying the bridges closest to the Ukrainian forces, the Russians are forced to either engage the Ukrainians with the risk of being trapped (once all 3 bridges are destroyed) or forced to retreat towards the remaining bridge allowing Ukraine to take more territory and maintain military, and political, pressure
Must be said the strategy, tactics and execution here are impeccable. A less thought out plan would have resulted in all three bridges being destroyed simultaneously with little media coverage - it is in the Ukrainians interest to stretch this out and keep it in the attention of the (Western) media to bolster more support and foster disarray in Moscow. The best case scenario is for the West to commit even more support (read: long range weapons that can reach Moscow; these need not be used, just the threat that they could be) and for the Kremlin to annonce another mass-mobilisation including the middle-class Russians in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Clearly the Ukrainians have read Sun Tzu's thoughts on maneuvering and his thoughts on victory. "The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting". The enemy is not the Russians, but those in power. The Russians are a doubled-edge weapon that is Ukraine's most powerful weapon in this war ...

Russia is “rapidly approaching” a key military hub in eastern Ukraine, a local official has said, as Russian forces continue its advances despite Kyiv’s incursion in Kursk region. While Pokrovsk is not a major city, about 60,000 people lived there before the SMO and many have left since the start of the SMO. it serves as a key hub for the Ukrainian military thanks to its easy access to Kostiantynivka, another military center. Ukrainian troops use the road connecting the two to resupply the front lines and evacuate casualties toward Dnipro.
Serhii Dobriak, head of the Pokrovsk city military administration, urged the community there to evacuate without delay.
“The Russian forces is rapidly approaching the outskirts of Pokrovsk,” he said in a Telegram post on Thursday.
His warning is proof that Russia has not relented in its attack on other parts of Ukraine, despite Kyiv’s incursion across the border over the past week, a major development after two-and-a-half years of open conflict. Ukrainian troops use the road connecting the two to resupply the front lines and evacuate casualties toward Dnipro.
According to Dobriak, the Russian forces is “almost right up close” to Pokrovsk, Ukraine’s key logistics and military hub that has become the focus of the Russian offensive in the Donetsk region.
“They are a bit more than 10 kilometers (about 6.2 miles) from the outskirts of Pokrovsk,” he said, adding that the situation “is only getting worse.”
For months, Russia has been stretching Ukrainian defenses across the entire front line, trying to grind down Ukrainian military as much as possible before new Ukrainian recruits and fresh batches of Western weapons start arriving on the battlefield.
The city’s capture would bring Russian closer to their goal of seizing all of the eastern Ukrainian regions of Luhansk and Donetsk.
Kostiantynivka is the southernmost part of a belt of four Ukrainian cities - with Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk and Sloviansk - that form the backbone of Ukraine’s defenses of the region, so any progress of Russian troops toward the city is significant.
Officer of Ukraine’s 59th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade Serhii Tsehotskyi told Ukrainian national broadcaster Suspilne on Friday that Ukraine’s incursion into Russia had not led to a decrease in Russia’s attacks in the Donetsk region.
He said Russia attempts to advance do not stop “for a minute,” and “the battles continue around the clock.”
Ukrainian army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi acknowledged Friday that “intense fighting” is taking place in the cities of Pokrovsk and Toretsk.
The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War said Thursday that Russian forces are “maintaining their relatively high offensive tempo” in Donetsk, “demonstrating that the Russian military command continues to prioritize advances in eastern Ukraine.
