My grandpa always took us out to his garden and pulled some sweet carrots, washed them off and we munched on our carrots and talked about the garden. As an old man he had gotten out of the hospital with heart trouble. He crawled out to his flower beds and was pulling weeds! His beloved plants kept him alive long after he was supposed to pass on. He was a great example to his grandkids to grow a garden.

I'm in rural texas Greg. Gardens are everywhere. Hell the farmers even plant out in a corner if fields. Those are usually sorta community gardens. I try to get my years supply if fresh blackeyed peas and beans outta those gardens. They get watered by irrigation wells along with the cotton.
But yes I'm fixing to clean my back yard up and start laying out my new greenhouse frame. And build my box's. Next month that aught to be well on the way. With plants getting started indoors as well.

This a definite plug for the YT channel, Green Country Agroforestry .. because we use every scrap of carbon we can get our hands on (but for sound reasons, not alarmism!) and have pioneered a few techniques for urban gardening that lower the 'footprint' .. but once again, that is incidental, as carbon dioxide is not an environmental pollutant, and getting the carbon out of the air and getting it into the soil is a central theme to our gardening plan. Long term, we would love to get MORE carbon out of the substrate and into the living soil layers .. preferably carbon from carbonate rock, as the Oxygen liberated will improve the quality and length of life for us terrestrial critters. How much? My best guess is an average life span for a human of 200-300 years for an average, barring death from excitement or boredom, once we have restored the atmosphere to ideal levels (we are about 144 trillion tons short, last time I calculated it) Now .. for the bad news. There are not enough human beings on the planet engaged in normal human activities to produce that much atmosphere. We really should have been roasting limestone like it was our religion for the past 6000 years (the Mayans did .. I wonder if they knew?)
Water: Excavate trenches between garden beds, and fill them with organic matter: sure, organic garbage does the trick, but also lawn clippings, leaves, and wood chips (from trees, not the lawn and garden center. Leave that junk on the shelf. It will outlast the sun, with all the chemicals in it) Toss the odd bits of lump charcoal from your BBQ in there, too (lump charcoal, not chemically treated briquettes. Learn how to start a fire without the lighter fluid .. your food will taste better, and it will save you tons of cash) add wood ash *only* if your soil PH tests at 7 or lower (if you have really alkaline soil, you may need a dedicated ash pit. Adding ashes is not the right treatment for every soil.) All of this organic matter soaks up and retains water, slowly releasing it to the plants that you have growing in the garden beds nearby. Keep that soil covered, hydrated, and fed .. and you will never need fertilizer. If your walkway organic matter bank is wide and deep enough, you may only need to use supplemental watering when getting plants established .. and a rain barrel is enough for that. In-ground beds, made by stacking the good top soil layers (from those trenches!) are best .. but, if you NEED to build a raised bed, I prefer concrete blocks. They last for at least a century (unless you have acid rain issues .. again wood ash is very alkaline, and may be of use there) and are made with cement - cement is made by roasting carbonate rock, freeing the trapped CO2 .. which leaves us with a net *gain* in oxygen after photosynthesis. We need as much of that as we can get. If you're worried that there might be too much CO2, plant a forest. (I sell trees, full disclaimer🧙🏻‍♂🌳 ) Speaking of keeping soil covered! Planting trees around your garden area provides additional protection for the soil, shade during the hottest parts of the day for tender plants, and a constant host for beneficial fungi to keep your soil fed. (as well as replenishing organic matter and remineralization every time the leaves fall) Fun Stuff we're into over here 🌎🕊

Good evening, Greg. I listened to this update tonight. My reaction is that as I get older, it seems that the word common sense has been put to rest, and the Lunatics have finally taken over the asylum. I believe that as I listened to the update, I heard my grandfathers voice. Arguing with everything you said with a few swear words in Welsh thrown in for good measure. He was an avid gardener who spent hours upon hours in the garden. Growing up, when I visited my grandparents, we never went without fresh produce and vegetables. All fresh from the garden. And to me, it tastes better than what we buy today. Come to think of it, the couple bunnies who had a borrow next door even had their share. And yes, Greg Gandad has always used seeds from the previous years growing season. And if you think Trudeau and his bunch of dimwitts are coming for our coffee. I'm sure that is what will cause Canada to come to a stop. Greg, thank you for the smile and memory of my grandfather.

Have you seen the tree calculator online? You put in how many trees you have on your land and can see how your trees offset your carbon footprint.
So if they took that calculation and working your garden, it equals they're full of poop.
Did they forget food miles??? How much diesel is used for the food factories? How much chemicals are used? All the packaging for the chemicals. The cost of employees, cost of the utilities, cost of the food packaging to sell to stores, the cost of the employees at the stores.....
    They're lieing.

Who ever controls the food controls everything. They want us all completely dependent on them.
Been growing gardens for 60 years, I have chickens and ducks and rabbits and burn wood, so I have my own fertilizer. I save seeds, the only thing I spend money on is for a new shovel or a new water hose every 2 or 3 years. I'd say that's pretty damn little environmental impact. This whole thing is ridiculous.

Actually, you can heat with coal. If you have a wood stove. Get coal, and throw a hand full in to supplement. Just have to check ( very closely) on fumes, stove tolerance (how much can the stove handle) Biggest thing, is Fire Safety! Check it during the day. To make sure you can Safely used your stove. To much coal will melt your standard wood stove. So start small.
You can actually get coal stoves to heat your house.
