The Beatles Song That Made Oasis's Sound

  • If someone talked to me about how they thought Oasis just made blatant Beatles ripoff music, this Beatles song would come to mind first. But could it also be one of the best Beatles songs, if not rock songs, ever? We run and douse our heads in the Rain to find an answer.
    (Oasis has some great records though, they're not ripoffs. except for that Coke lawsuit fiasco. that might have been a little bit of a ripoff)

    Something else not mentioned. Rain and Paperback Rider were recorded shortly after the Beatles had a conversation with George Martin concerning the volume of Paul’s bass on their records. They said it was too low, it needed to be louder to compete with other groups of the time. He complied and out came Rain/PR. Paul’s bass parts on both songs created a sensation among bass players of the day (I know this because I was one of them!) and imitations of the style abounded on the radio. Also, the innovative and aggressive playing of Cream’s Jack Bruce at that time was undoubtedly the spark that lit that bonfire. Studio bass megastar Joe Osborn in LA must also be mentioned for his huge contribution playing on songs like Midnight Confessions, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and many others.

      Cool history! Speaking as as guitar player, Paul's bass performances on both are some of his most memorable to me. Also if we're talking about bass in 1966, I wonder if you were into Pet Sounds when it came out that year. Carol Kaye playing Brian Wilson's compositions is the greatest bass sound I've ever heard, absolutely legendary stuff to my ears.

    The quote from Geoff Emerick there
    "The Beatles played the rhythm track really fast so that when the tape was played back at normal speed everything would be so much slower, changing the texture. If we'd recorded it at normal speed and then had to slow the tape down whenever we wanted to hear a playback it would have been much more work."
    _Literally_ makes no sense.

    • @cisium1184
      @cisium1184 Місяць тому +2

      Sure it it does. The goal was for playback to sound slowed down and draggy. You can achieve that either by: 1) recording at normal tape speed and slowing it down for playback, or 2) recording at a faster tape speed and then dialing it back to normal speed. Because the key you're in at playback is the key you need to match the dubs to, it's easier record the backing track by method #2 because you lock into that key. Then you can record all your dubs at normal speed and you do not have to play around with them to get everything in tune. Then the only track you have to worry about is the lead vocal which is the oppose dynamic of the rhythm track: recorded on a slower speed and a lower key and then sped up to pitch.

    I think that the analysis is good, but something in the argument is missing. You just proved the way The Beatles created a sound. But the way you deduce that is the sound that inspire Oasis has a hole. You must show how Oasis got their sound and in what way that techniques influenced Oasis techniques. Just showing that Rain song might be similar to Oasis, does not prove your point.

      @@antoniolucas98 Innerspeaker is like 60s/70s psych rock and Lonerism is 70s psych and pop, both with Lennon vocals, I mean I'd get some Zeppelin comparison but specifically No Quarter, I don't know about that. Check out some early 70s German groups like Amon Duul and Can for a lot of Kevin's influence on those two albums

      What would be the leading note? Fx ?

    Well, that stripped down, 2 guitar style - basic chords with more overdrive/less heavy distortion, was the sound of Britpop - a sort of British grunge. One of the many trends The Beatles got to first. Although Rain obviously influenced Oasis, that’s just one song, and Oasis can’t realistically be compared to The Beatles in any other way. I’d generally compare them more with the Kinks - although nowhere near as good.

    John Lennon is singing the higher harmony over his own voice during the chorus section. I can clearly hear it.

      @themusicalinfluenceweb  Місяць тому

      Woah, I just relistened and listened to the isolated backing tracks and you might actually be right. I was completely certain that was Paul but the higher harmony does sound a lot like John. It's like the highest notes I've ever heard him hit (even though it's probably sped up and the pitch is artificially higher). It just always sounded like something more likely to be in Paul's range to me but the vocal fry is way more John.

    The Oasis sound came from number of influences, including Slade, T-Rex, Sex Pistols and contemporaries like Stone Roses and Teenage Fanclub.
    Gallagher included a few Beatles quotes and tributes in some songs but they were never found to have plagiarised them. They did however plagiarise the Rutles!
