Yeah, I love the scholarly material with Oxford World’s Classics and Penguin Classics, so they’re my first picks for classics (along with Norton Critical Editions).
After those three, Everyman is my fourth pick. It’s the first hardcover one, though, and if there was really a book I wanted a nice hardcover of, I’d probably go with Everyman’s (or maybe Canterbury Classics/B&N Classics).

I completely agree! Everyman's is without any doubt the best collection on the market when one considers quality, selection and affordable price point. In my opinion, it should be every reader's first choice when selecting a primary book type around which to base and build their collection.
Edit: I just ordered my latest Everyman's, "The Stories of Ray Bradbury" from Book Depository - I cannot wait till it arrives! :)

    • @BookCravings

BookCravings Sorry about the late reply. Yep, I finished it. By and large and excellent collection of short stories and very representative of Bradbury's work as a whole. I highly recommend the EL copy as well! If you have a look on Goodreads you will find quite a large selection of reviews of the book including a number which have complete reviews of each story. Well worth the purchase price, especially if you enjoy the short story medium.
Just an FYI, when buying you might want to check on Book Depository. I have noticed that the UK editions of the Everyman's Library collection are usually quite a bit cheaper than the US editions of the same book, sometimes as much as $10-$15 dollars (Canadian). I believe that the UK version of the Bradbury collection was about $25 CAD whereas the US edition was almost $40 CAD.
      Regards
      Ray

I fully agree- I have over 30 EL editions. They are perhaps the best in hardcovers. But two caveats are in order:
    - volumes with less than 308 pages are now glued, not sewn. This is total cheating, and unacceptable. Their pocket poetry collections too are glued, not sewn. So one has to be careful, and not go by the hardcover label. The famous EL standard is compromised here.
    - foreign readers would like more explanatory material, and annotations in some cases. For this we have to look elsewhere now- like Penguins or Oxford, though they are flimsy paperbacks and would not stand repeated reading. Norton Critical editions are better, but they can be too academic, with dry theories foisted on us.

    • @BookCravings
      @BookCravings  5 років тому +3

Hi! I heard that only editions printed in the 90s were glued and a few printed nowadays. I have some volumes with less than 300 pages and fortunately they are sewn. I'm not sure how EL is managing this...

I have started buying Everyman's Library versions of my favourite Victorian classics. I have around 12 so far. Here's a question - do you prefer to leave dust jackets on? I think they look very elegant on the shelf without the jackets, but of course I want them to be protected. It's a tricky question for me. I even heard one person so they put the jackets on only when reading that particular book and they leave them off the rest of the time. What do others do / think?

Hi! Folio Society is better but very expensive. I love Everyman's Library because is more affordable and the quality is great. I also really enjoy the idea of having a collection of books of the same size and design. Another collection I really like is Library of America, which is an American non-profit organization. The books are a bit more expensive than Everyman's Library but the quality is similar.
BTW there is a big sale going on at the Folio Society website. It is the best way to purchase their books. They are expensive, but gorgeous and made to last through generations.
      Thank you for watching =)

    • @mjmooney

I DO have a 1991 Wuthering Heights that has distinctly bolder/blurrier font than all my later ELs, so there are certainly SOME changes across the years. I respectfully disagree. Merely because the text is available for free, does not mean that the production of a cloth-bound, hardcover book, with sewn bindings, and a scholarly introduction *should* be available new for less than $20 (roughly the equivalent of 2 hours work in a minimum-wage job in the US). I suppose it could be, but I don't know what kind of labor conditions would enable a publisher to produce this quality and still turn a profit (profits being the only reason we have quality books in the first place).
Also, these editions are generally available for much cheaper than $20 on the second-hand market. Anyway, happy hunting for quality books at affordable prices!
