Okay I love that you show your failed attempts too. That's so real of you. Came across your page to learn while I wait for my D1 to get here. You're great!
just a tip, you can just use tumbler or anything you will try new that you have not experienced with and make a diagram with lots of squares each one with a different setting so that in one tumbler you have all the settings on it so which ever you like the best with the most detail on that setting you just use that setting for all the rest so you wont have to waste lots of tumblers for no reason....learned that from an actual laser engraver guy on his youtube page ;-)
Thanks for the tip!
Cheers
Figured this out on my own after wrecking a few of em lol
Blue tape and low burn settings are your friend for prototyping.
@josephKEOarthur problem with blue tape is that you will never get a real sense of what it will really look like if you trying to burn something on a different material because other materials don't burn the same so it's best to do a sample of every power setting in the can't type of material your going to be doing it on.
Awesome was the final results. Now talk us through step by step how you got there. I want you to know, we also Appreciate the screw-ups. It helps us greet the fears/challenges.
Thanks a trillion 💜💗
YA WHAT SETTING GOT TO THAT RESULT?
A much easier method of alignment (assuming you move that laser from time to time) would be to measure distances from that convenient targeting dot on your stepper motor to the center of the rotary axis and end of the tumbler and either creating a fixture in your software (if software supports fixturing) or simply aligning the base of the rotary with a square to the laser frame and moving the known distance from the targeting dot to engraving zero.
The machine is capable of both measuring and setting exact distances. There is no reason to eyeball it. My two cents. :)
I just bought a D1 with the Tumbler attachement and the Air Assist. Now I need to Justify the purchase!
Get to work, brother!
Cheers
I really enjoy watching this video as I am considering getting a laser I am learning all I can before purchasing one
Cheers!
Let me know if you have any questions.
First time watching your channel, love it! If I can make a suggestion, next time you make a mistake on a tumble, don’t waste another one, just spray paint it, and run your test again.
Thanks for the tip!
Cheers
But burning off spray paint is not the same as removing powder coat. What may look promising may not be.
If these lasers are like the CO2 overshooting the power won't matter because it will not harm the metal on the cup. You would need a fiber laser for that
@@rtml_aerial not true. If you run it too slow, you end up marking the bare metal as well and you get a dark result and see the lines.
@@bhutch216 I think that has been my downfall. What setting is just right?

Love your channel and found a lot of good tips. I’m just having a heck of a time with tumblers. Can’t get one to stay shine or be detailed without visible lines…have changed a ton of sittings and tried gradient grid but no luck.
I absolutely love your videos and your sense of humor is so awesome! Keep it coming!
Thank you!
I love the channel and the personality, the presence so to speak. Anyhow, got to show light burn man laserbox is childs play, show settings, speeds, powers, different power lasers, 5, 10, 20 so on, I see the result, but how did you get there?!
Loved your final tumbler. Now can you do a white based tumbler,,, and, engrave a mug as well, please?

GREAT JOB ON THE VIDEO, I AM NEW TO USING A LASER, GOT ONE ON FATHERS DAY, I KNOW I HAVE A LOT TO LEARN, I HAVE A CRICUT AIR 2, AND I DO PROFESSIONAL PRINTING ALSO, USING A LASER MAKES ME FEEL LIKE I AM USING A PRINTER AND CRUCIT MACHINE TOGETHER, I HAVE NOTICED THAT SPEED AND POWER IS THE MOST IMPORT PART, THE TRICKY PART IS FINDING THE END RESULTS THAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE, I FOUND IT IS HAS DIFFICULTIES GETTING THE SHARPNESS IN IMAGES, I HAVE BEEN WATCHING YOUR VIDEO FOR A VERY SHORT TIME, YOU COVER THINGS WELL, I LIKE YOU ADMIT YOU MAKE MISTAKES, YOU DONT CLAIM TO KNOW IT ALL, I HAVE WATCHED A LOT OF LASER ENGRAVING VIDEOS AND MOST OF THEM SUCK, WAY TOO MUCH TO DO AND WAY TOO MANY TEST A LOT OF SET UP TALK, AND A BUNCH OF PREP TALK AND AFTER ABOUT 15 MINUTES, MOST ARE TALKING AND MAKING EVERYTHING WITH WAY TOO MANY STEPS, I HAVE NOTICED THAT IT CAN TAKE AN HOUR OR 2 ON DETAILED DESIGNS AND PROJECTS, YOU DO A GREAT JOB, I HAVE LEARNED SOME THINGS FROM YOUR VIDEOS, I HAVE NOT TRIED PAINTED SURFACES OR ANYTHING MAJOR, MOSTLY ON CARDBOARD AND I STARTED WORKING ON METAL BUSINESS CARDS, I HAVE A DESIGN BUSINESS, AND I DONT REAL POST VIDEOS ON WHAT I DO BUT I HAVE 1 VIDEO ON ONE OF MY CHANNELS, THE CHANNEL AND THE NAME OF MY BUSINESS IS "REFLECTIVE 23 DESIGNS", I HAVE STARTED IT BACK IN 2020, IT TAKES A BIT TO FIND THE VIDEO YOU MIGHT HAVE TO SCROLL FOR A WHILE, THE VIDEO HAS ONLY BEE UP FIR A SHORT TIME NOW, YOU HAVE TO LOOK UNDER "HTV GLOW IN THE DARK" OR "HEAT TRANSFER VINYL GLOW IN THE DARK", ITS A LARGE WOLF SCENE I CREATED AND DESIGNED AND IT SHOWS BASIC STAGES OF WHAT I DO, ITS NOT THE GREATEST VIDEO, BUT IT GETS THE POINT A CROSSED, THE BACKGROUND MUSIC IS MUCH FROM ONE OF MY ALBUMS(I PLAYED ALL OF THE INSTRUMENTS, RECORDED, ENGINEERED, DID EVERYTHING, BY MYSELF), I JUST PUT THE VIDEO TOGETHER QUICK, SORRY I WENT ON A BIT IN THIS COMMENT, GREAT JOB
Thank you!

would be nice if you shared the speed n power. none was mentioned in the video nor description :(
Varies by machine
Thanks for the great video! I would suggest using a cheap vinyl cutter like a silhouette or cricket and cut out the vinyl sticker like a stencil and paint your thermal design on or if you want something nice that will not slowly chip away from washing it in the dishwasher, get a cheap powder coat cut from harbor freight and powder coat that baby! I have done this and it works great.
Thanks for the info!

Hey Donovan. So you can do this with a cricut and what kind of paint that won't come off. I have a cricut and would like to try this
"guns blazing ...may work in the bedroom ..." 😂😂😂 Awesome video, thanks!
Guess I have to get me a roller now as well. 🤔. Great research.
Really grateful for the videos and humor along the way. Here my idea maybe try a AR Mag?
If you've gotta spare one you want to send me...
Cool, Dad, Cool! Thanks!
What speeds, dpi, and power did you cut that at and how long did it take?
Hope you also make a video using the Sculpfun S10 laser machine in making that tumbler and using light burn as your software!! But regardless, awesome video!!
Quick question and not a poke the bear comment but, the last image is definitely not the first image. So, was it more of a poor image selection and not a settings issue? Really want to know how critical image selection is. Thanks!!
Poor image selection. I thought I could get better grey tones, but with the coated tumblers it seems like black and white are much easier to reproduce.
Cheers
What power and speed did you have the final burn on? Loving your content as well
Thanks Victor!

What ideas for teachers do you have? I’m a teacher and will be buying the X tool as a way to make some extra dough.
great video, i am looking for an awesome feel and look to my tumblers, therefore i want depth in the actual laser engraved materials, not just etching or marking. Would you give me some advice regarding settings so i can achieve my goal.
I don't want my products to look as if someone used a sharp object to draw on them but actual layers of both areas.

How do you know power to use when doing tumblers

Dig your videos! I am very new to engraving and your videos have been a great help. I have been trying all day trying to engrave tumblers and failed. Run a speed and power grid for best settings.
Beautiful job. Thanks for the info

Can this laser be used in a side room in the house? Interested for expanding my business. I use a side bedroom/craft room for all my projects.
I’d look into something enclosed like the xTool S1
That looks awesome!! If you don’t mind me asking what are your settings on this? I hear you have to spray this with something before engraving tumblers or anything metalish? Salud man! 🍻

In this video I think I just used the coated metal settings. And I've never sprayed anything on a coated tumbler before I've engraved it.

The name of song is Stand by me.
Will this 5 or 10 watt penetrate a Yeti Tumbler Other videos are recommending the 75 Watt
You can do it with the 10W. Not sure about the 5.

how long did it take for the laser to etch the final result? I am looking at buying one and this is a great help, but I am curious as to time/tumbler ratio
About 35-45 minutes. In my testing the 20watt unit can engrave faster. But I haven’t tried it with the rotary yet.
@@BuildDadBuild that's not bad at all! I know the dialogue lasers especially a 10w, isn't everybody's dream per se, but I'm really liking this machine. Of course I wanted to go with something like a gloforge, but who can afford something like that as an entry level?! I appreciate your response, as well as your videos. Hey brother I’m getting lines after my engraving of the tumbler and IdK why!! Do you know why?? It’s vertical lines past the image!
Usually means you need to update the firmware.
Have you tried a gun Barrell??
No. You would probably need some sore of transfer agent. And being able to engrave it at all would depend on the material of the barrel.
Cheers
Great video! I'm learning so much from you as a newbie. How could you make the silver park under the black coating gold or a different color?
Mask the whole thing. Run your engrave and then spray it a different color.
Best way to align it up is by removing the bottle and get the laser to be center between the rollers
I am using the D1 to engrave tumblers and the engrave time says, for example, 35 minutes at 50 speed setting. But the actual time is almost 4-5 hours! I don't know what I am doing wrong. Please help! I'm new to this and I'm guessing it's a simple fix. I've also worked in Lightburn but the dimensions don't come out right, (big sigh with frustration). Thanks in advance.
Not sure. It might be the type of file. If you have a bunch of white space around your image the laser tracks that ...
Freaking awesome! So what were the final settings on that awesome ying-yang tumbler? Still 100% power with 70 mm/s?
It was whatever the settings are for painted metal.

There is an app you can control with your phone or iPad, but it’s very limited.
Hey thanks for all the help. I'm pretty new to all this and I have a question. I got the skinnier tumblers but the cylinders slide down on the rotary tool. Is there a way to keep this from happening besides bracing? Probably an easy answer, just wondering what others do. Tia
Sure is. You need to put a little weight inside the tumbler. Like a beanbag or a ziplock bag full of rice.

So the bottom line is to use black and white images? I also looked at the xTool D1 and it looks different than yours.
A little shading is OK, the first image I had just had too much gray.

Hi there, was surfing the web and came across you. Enjoyed watching you. I am looking at making spoon rings. I'll be using mainly stainless steel spoons, however, may also use sterling silver, and silver plated. My question is, can this machine engrave, on a small surface, such as a ring? Or, do you have any suggestions on another machine that would work? It would be preferable to find a machine that engrave on a variety of surfaces, and sizes, from rings, to lets say tumblers for example. Really new to this, and green lol 😆. Any ideas would be appreciated. I have subscribed, and look forward to watching more of your videos! Thanks in advance. Cheers 🍻
It can engrave on small surfaces the issue you may have is trying to mark sterling silver eilmth a diode.
Have you ever tried it with paper or cardstock? I have not been seeing that being used during my research.

Hownlong did it take to engrave your tumblers?
Too many variables to answer that.
Missed said in my previous comment. CAN'T get the shiny stainless steel to shine through.

Like 35 minutes
Hey sir, do you have any trouble with designs on conical / tapered objects? Drinking glasses and tumblers? I am going to upgrade to the D1 but my laser is stationary and I think that may be why it distorts the image. Thanks in advance!
It’s probably slipping on the rollers.
@@BuildDadBuild Thank you! I thought that too, so I used rubber bands but it still did it. There is a math equation that seems to help with the tapered stuff but I watched your videos and you never had any problem. If I do straight walled tumblers its fine. I thought it may be because my laser head doesn't move like the D1 does. Again, thanks for the help!
Is the software easy to use?
It's pretty easy. And simple.
