Hello from Peru. Best thing to do is having water reservoir, the higher the number of liters the better. PROMART a peruvian company now working in Ecuador ( Guayaquil and building a 2° hardware store in Quito ) has huge water tank for saving 2,500 liters. They have 3 layer of plastic, external UV + thermic layer + internal anti-bacteria. My data says that about 1000 liters is good enough for 1 person during 1 week used for regular consume as washing dishes, washing clothing, washing ourselves, etc.
You're right, we're pretty much pooched when the power goes in winter. I think your suggestions are really good ideas. We keep a few extra gallons of water on hand at all times, and in terms of heat we have a gas fireplace that can run without electricity. We've had many smokey days from all the fires and record heat. You sound a lot calmer than I feel about climate change, which seems to be on a path of super acceleration. Cheers from Canada and take care.
I wonder why more emphasis hasn't been given to solar power? Due to its single digit latitudes, Ecuador seems like an excellent candidate to harness the sun's energy. Panel efficiencies and batteries are considerably more efficient and safer than the best technology available to us just a few years ago. Furthermore, I have yet to see any credible evidence that humans have had a significant impact on global weather patterns. I still attribute much of the extreme weather phenomena we're seeing to the grand solar minimum.
I appreciate the great research! We are on the coast, it's dry here but pretty typical so far. I am definitely considering a solar system but our generator works great. Get 8nhours per tank of gas.
The sad part is harnessing free energy from the ether has been around since Tesla, the Chicago fair in the early 1900’s was from free energy. It exist but it’s hidden from the general public ..
Interesting News!! So, if moving to Equador, you might need to bring a few solar panels with You!! I am surprised they don't invest in Wind energy, as the Coast seems to always be windy. Also solar panels installed on new construction would be a great help to all! Thanks for the report....praying for rain for You all!!
Again, great information. You've given me several ideas on things to bring for my particular needs. I teach via Zoom, and use a c-pap. Will look into the mini solar panels and battery banks. I have a generator--kind of a necessity here in Florida. Can you buy portable generators in Ecuador? Enough to power a fridge and a/c unit, for example?
How lnog do you think it would take to have a permanent geothermal energy system in place there and are there currently even funds available? That sounds like a much better long term solution than the unreliable hydroelectric sources.
Climate change really is becoming an issue but until every country makes changes it’s going to keep progressing. Makes me scared to think about what my grandchildren will face in years to come. We as humans are destroying our planet, polluting the ground, burning holes in the ozone layer, polluting the oceans etc. I hope the rain heads to South America very soon. Best wishes to you and Kris through these times.
Ok, so yesterday we had a 3 hour power outage from 10 - 1 pm. Today, Monday 9/23, we had a power outage from 10:15 am to 3:15 pm. This information was not made available by Cuenca High Life or any other format so that we could be prepared. I'm not sure where you are getting your information from, but there has been no power outages at night, as was proposed in the past. Lots of people in the government giving different times, and then, now, we get nothing. I am not on Facebook. Is there some reliable place to get information at least 12 hours before the outage hits?
Yes the major hydro electric plant was shut down as an emergency measure as it is dry. 3 plants actually. So all the overnight outages have changed to daily an d overnight in many cases. There is a schedule for each particular area now and it changes a lot. If you don't have Facebook then go to the website of your local energy provider and have translate on. Good luck 🤞
I lived in Manta last year. When the rolling blackouts were happening. I'm now in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and life is too short to live in that dump of a country called Ecuador. Get out now while you can. There are so many other nice places in South America. I went to Lima after Manta, and then I went to Medellin before Buenos Aires. I would never go back to Ecuador. Nothing is worth it there. I lived in Manta for 6 months, Lima for 4, and Medellin two times. The first time was 8 months, and the last time was 3 months. Now it's been 3 months in Buenos Aires, so I have time on the ground and know what living in these places is like. It's only going to get worse in Ecuador.
Thank you for such a detailed video - well done!
Thanks 👍
Thanks for the dispatch ❤
Thanks 👍
thanks for the news
👍
Thanks for keeping in real, Mike. Fingers crossed these challenges won't affect our trip to Cuenca in early November. Take care!
Hopefully lots of rain by then for sure.
Love it, thanks
👍
Thank you so much for reporting on this very important information.💚
Thanks 👍

Yes exactly. Mine is pretty big. Will last awhile if needed. I keep it at the top. Pool is backup.

We agree on climate change. Don't let my calmness fool you. Lol. Take care.
Thanks Mike, such great info!
Thanks 🙏

Not sure why solar is not utilized more. Geothermal is coming tho.

Everyone should have extra water stored up for at least a month, you can live without food for a while but not water …
Yes exactly
Very interesting!
Yup crazy times.
In Ecuador I can recommend propane-based power generator, because propane is sold to your house door and it's cheaper than gas
Exactly, thanks 👍

Yes you can buy generators. No problem. Thanks for your support.

They are supposed to start in 2025. Great solution 👍
The weather is turning. Ocean cooling.

Well said. Thanks 🙏
Please advise about more private home conservation of water & electricity

I wonder if Cotacachi is having problems with fires, lack of water/electricity?
I believe they are with electric and water shortages. I think the fires are more in the south.
And also Colombia - more severe there than here.
Mike. Are you on the grid or renewable?
On the grid.

We love it here. Glad you found your happy place tho.
It's worse in Colombia than Ecuador. Most of South America has been seriously affected by the drought.
"Nothing is worth it there."
Could you please elaborate?
Argentina!? ARGH!
