WOW , who else is listening in right now in Nov 2024 great then you and i got great taste in gene's soulful voice ENJOY and thanks for a excellent upload 💯👍🎵🎶✊
He was Golden . An original whose voice, like Roy Orbison, can never be replaced . Great songwriter too. Half- heaven, half-heartache is the song I get weepy about . ❤️
His voice is incredible. It is so controlled, its like an engine.. he pulls away gently and at 1.10 he lets us know that he about to open the throttle and so he does.. At 1.30 he really opens the taps and turns on the after burners and gives it full thrust. Being in my early 70's I still remember him 1st time round in the 60's and that song still send a shiver down your spine.. An incredible performance
My mum was a huge Gene Pitney fan, played this song at her funeral 3 weeks ago. Think she would have have approved. Hopefully she's met him now! Bless you mum xxxx
One of my all-time favorite singers. I read something in one of his cds. They said when he sung he never needed a microphone. His voice was that powerful. Love his songs. Rest in peace Gene. I hope you are in heaven. With a voice like you had, I'm sure GOD would have been pleased to have you in HIS heavenly choir.
I'll bet there is talent like this out there today,,but i dont have have enough time to search for it. there was no need to search for talent in the 60s. it was all around you. thank God for places like youtube. thanks for uploading this classic..
Yes, I love the music of Gene Pitney. I am a true Oldies- I grew up during the 50's and 60's- I was a teenager at time. My music is bound up in that era - my true favorite type of music - it brought oh such joy and happiness to me.
Gene Pitney was the Master of projecting the feelings and emotions in a song. I watched this video so many times and it still gives me goose bumps. His music has touched so many and I know his family will always be proud.
It so looks like the Pitney concerts that I attended in my very early teens! I'm surprised he got out of there in one piece! Beautiful operatic voice shows on this one! RIP xx
One of his best right here from the late and great Gene Pitney unbelievable voice wow RIP. Still play him on my internet radio show Classic Soul me The Masterblaster
This guy continues to amaze me after listening to his music for over fifty years. His voice still amazes me....This guy could sing with a voice as clear as crystal and in the same song he could add to it a kind of growl and then add a fuzzy sound of some sort then back again to crystal. He also had tremendous range and was a brilliant lyricist. You won't find any likes him anymore, or the others either; they are gone....all we have is their music and some folks that do covers but there're not near as good! I wonder if this kind of music will ever re-invent it's self?
I sang Town Without Pity at a concert in Somers Ct. Didn't realize he was buried right down the street. I visited him and thanked him for such great music.
We were fetched up with Gene Pitney, my mam loved him so very much, and we do too, I cry every time I hear him sing, for the memories of my mam, we know all the words to all his songs. My mam was going to go see him on his last visit to Sheffield, but she was in Sheffield Northern General on Kidney ward, very ill, Gene sadly passed away too before the concert went ahead, my mam passed away soon after. I will always listen and sing to Gene Pitney songs, he was an amazing singer, with a talented gift. He will always be remembered.
One of the first 45's I bought as a kid. I still get chills hearing it. I mustered the courage to ask a girl to dance at my first "sock hop",..... to this tune. Gene is the leader of the choir in heaven.
Gene Pitney had an extraordinary voice! I listen to this song over and over and it amazes me how he changes from not only from one octave to another but "how" he changes the "sound" of his voice. I really don't know how to say it but I'm sure everyonsizere knows what I'm talking about. It's like his voice is a synthesizer!
I saw his Dick Clark Shows and just loved the way he would jump off the stage to be close to his fans. He drove the security guys crazy. They had him at the Colliseum where they had horse shows. He had a stage in the middle of the ring. During one of his songs, he jumped into the ring, mud up to his knees and went to the railing to greet his fans. How can you not love this guy! This video shows this. His voice pierces my soul. RIP Gene. You are sadly missed. Christine...Syracuse, NY
i waited for year's to see this guy i finally gotta ticket for a show in manchester when he died two days before i was devastated he was a one off never to be repeated talent r.i.p
Wonderful song, pure talent. You won't see this song covered by any of today's so called artists; there's no improving on perfection. Thank you for posting it so those of us who still remember what music sounded like before it became manufactured in a studio, still have an opportunity to listen to it and appreciate it. Oh, and to the person who posted "yawn" get off of your electronic device and get some sleep, you obviously need some rest.
One of the REAL talents, as were so many during that era. Shame you don't hear this on the radio (agree, werbeone). i like upbeat version by Bill Medley, and great version by Cindi Lauper, but this is truly a special treat and I play this often. Thank you for posting!
Gene Pitney was unbelievable, and here we have him at his best. If anyone could post "True Love Never Runs Smooth" by him, I'd be eternally grateful! Thanks for posting this one.
I was 13 when this song came out and it still stands as my favorite. I never heard anyone do an ending like this before or since. His voice could not be recreated. It was one of a kind. God only handed out this voice to Gene. The rest trying to do his music are just wanna be's. RIP to the greatest voice in my lifetime.
Gene Pitney was unsurpassed in his vocal command and power. I'm a guy and cry at the end of this song! He had the best control, modulation, phrasing and total lungs, especially at the end of this song! How he did that was nothing short of amazing! This may have been a voice-over, but he showed just how much he put into it! BTW I saw the Cyndi Lauper version and while it was good, she needed 2 breaths to still fall short of what he did in one breath. However, I like her a lot and even more that she chose this song.
Saw Gene Pitney in 1984 - in Hamilton - and he hit and held the very same note we hear here. Luckily that was the last song of the show, because the roof was gone when he hit that note.
Hello Olivia. Saw Gene a few years back in Sussex UK. he was awesome and I am still a young un.. Miss him still... what a voice and i believe he entered the R&R hall of fame quit and late is his life :-)
was going to see gene in ireland the year he died never will stop loving your songs rest in peace sweet man gone too soon xxxxxxxxxxxx catherinexxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Wow - I've heard Bill Medley's fantastic up-beat version of this and love it, and Lauper's take is soul-stirring right to the last note, but the dramatic, power-ballad style Pitney is the benchmark for this song. Thank you for posting!!!
Man oh man - how did he manage the ending of that song? The notes keep getting higher and higher and the power doesn't let up! Goosebumps! Thanks so much for posting this! Wouldn't it have been great if we could have had the quartet of Gene, Jay Black (of Jay and the Americans), Roy Orbison and Tom Jones do this song together? Some might want to include Elvis too...
@ Olivia Pitney, your uncle was and still is amazing. I love his songs; especially "Something Gotten Hold of My Heart" and "Tulsa", among many others....
I agree he was the best of all time the voice is an amazing gift ,thank you for sending him in this lifetime i have been a strong follower since the age of 12 years old ,funny that my family are all hip hop ,soul and other music but this guy hes is the best ,can you get another voice to match ,hes between opera, country what a blessing
I agree, gdouglas999.....Gene & Roy were the best singers the 60's produced. What a shame they both died so young. Although I regrettably never got to see Gene Pitney (my favorite) perform live, I was fortunate to see Roy Orbison about a year before he died. I remember him getting a standing ovation after just about every song, & SO well deserved.
Your uncle was unsurpassed in his vocal command and power. I'm a guy and cry at the end of this song! He had the best control, modulation, phrasing and total lungs, especially at the end of this song! How he did that was nothing short of amazing! This may have been a voice-over, but he showed just how much he put into it!
Olivia Pitney Olivia you should be proud. One of my favourite singers of all time. I will never get tired of listening to him. I used to rewind in the old days of cassettes and just keep playing him over and over. Still to this day (after years of listening) his voice gives me goosebumps. I love all his songs but this one is most definitely one of my favourites. I love watching him too so my favourites of the videos are of him singing live at the time, even those that have gone a bit out of sync.
This is one of my favorites of his. Thanks for posting it. The first time I heard Gene Pitney sing was when "Town Without Pity" was on the late show. I stayed up till the end to see the credits and the next day I went down to the records store and bought every album they had of his! Wish I'd gotten to see him in concert. There will never be another like him.
Geme Pitney souring performance is a musical masterpiece...a magnificent voice and talent who was great in concert and rocked LA in the late 90's and this song was amazing live...Bravo Gene!!!
Gene was so friendly. We emailed back and forth for a year. He arranged two free tickets for my son who was living in London when he gave a concert there. So down to earth and an amazing voice.
Glad my parents introduced to music of this Era! Today’s music just doesn’t stand up to the standards of this music! Singers knew how to sing back then!
captivating every time - timeless song sung by a guy who had a ridiculous amount of real talent and stage presence - American Idol & others need to get off the air-they will never hold a candle to stuff like this, or even the great variety shows of the 60s & 70s,for that matter...thank you, zatara2000 and others on youtube for helping me to stay "back in the day" and have easy access to real music !
Such a voice, and talent at such a young age.He had a special range in the gift of his voice, and he had it all his lifet till the end, which was too soon. His songs were deeply felt and he himself was in a class of his own.I adored him.Thank you Gene.
An absolutely stellar performance! Keep your eye on the cute girl with long, dark hair who is to the left of Gene Pitney. When Gene steps up on the platform to sing, the girl starts to "lose it" and Gene looks at her. I think this is the same girl who gives him a big hug when the song is over. The awesomeness of READY STEADY GO was that the fans were so close to the performers and this made for an exhilarating interaction. Long live the Sixties!
What I loved about Gene Pitney was that he needed no fancy moves or gimmicks. He just stood there and used that marvellous voice of his. This man never made a bad record imo.
This song popped into my head the other day and I was amazed that I remembered the lyrics word for word. Gene Pitney could have sung anything. I was a kid when he was at his peak of fame, but I remember so many of his songs. Great voice and phrasing.
This song has helped me in tough times, and to this day when I'm feeling down, I put this song on and sing along and it makes me feel I'm gonna be strong
I love this old footage. I never saw him in person and this is the next best thing. What a voice! This song gets me every time. It never, ever gets old! I only wish I was the girl at the end!
Memories of visiting my cousins in Rockville Ct. [yes Gene was from a town called Rockville] . they lived a few houses across from his house and would wait on the stoop for hours hoping to get a glimpse of him. The Crystal Lake Ballroom was a place where he honed his talent, it's still there I think. Saw him at Mohegan Sun just before he died and he still had a great set of pipes. RIP
I thought Gene Pitney had such an unusual voice, gosh what a range, Saw him in concert, it was just awesome. They just don't have music today like that
i love and hate this song at the same time...the opening line..."Ican see your slipping away from me" reminds me of my mums passing in ;87, and time does not always mak things easier. However thi really is a beautiful song thanks for the posting x
Been my favorite since I was a child. Still listen to him.
What a voice! I loved him so much back then and even tho I know hes gone..I love him still. Singers today cant hold a candle.
Hi Sallie . . .you just need a good dose of Kenny Vance :o)

ANOTHER INCREDIBLE SONG BY THIS INCREDIBLE SINGER. WHAT A VOICE. LOVED EVERYTHING HE SANG. RIP Gene.
Well said Olivia, he was always my favourite singer and nobody to touch him. I will always stick up for him. ❤️
This song still makes my scalp tingle....52 years later, it still has raw power.
The original 'power ballad'.
I grew up in that erra. I love music at that time. Gene Pitney was one of my favorites. I miss his style of singing.

My favourite of all his songs, but not long enough. I have to listen to it at least twice.

On each of these threads, there should be a warning: Scroll down at your own risk. The trolls can be off-putting, to say the least.
Some of his songs brought me to tears because of certain events in my life - this song was one of them. Thanks, very much, for posting this song ;)
Yes they do now.

Gene was one of the best male voices of the 1960's, the era of the greatest pop music ever
What I loved about Gene Pitney was that he needed no fancy moves or gimmicks. He just stood there and used that marvellous voice of his. This man never made a bad record imo.
Exactly the same applies to Roy Orbison!
Also grew up hearing Gene.. Felt the tears when he passed. The people there, knew talent, for Gene Pitney is one WOW of a singer ..
