I've noted Frampton is now training with the forward group. I think they see him as a backup fwd now. Reef is competing with Dean & Jiath for that defenders role. I think Dean has a really good footy brain and reads the play so well. Jiath has superb athletic ability and seems to have added some strength to his frame. Reef is somewhere in the middle. I think the most important factor will be which one competes better one on one with their direct opponent. Playing third man up can be easy. Being caught one on one with your direct opponent and winning or halving the contest is more important. Which ever one can prove more adept at that side of the game gets the first chance.

Nice well rounded analysis! And think these are all great points to raise and debate.
The other Collingwood channels can be a bit too rose-coloured which there's nothing wrong with that. But there's definitely a nice space for constructive analysis from a content perspective and it's personally something I prefer.

Hey Anthony, yes I agree..Reef needs more time in pre-season to build his defender craft.
I think as some of the others are saying in the comments, he needs to spend time with Howe, learning how to spoil and clunk the ball into better spots, either over the boundary line, or in the path of other players to get it out of the defensive 50.
See how he goes for the rest of the pre-season and if he can get better as a defender.
I think a few games in the VFL & then give him some games in the AFL to see how he goes.

He needs to have more on ball time to develop to next level. He has ability. We need to keep him.

Darcy needs to step up himself this season! Which I think he will. 💪

He's a half forward flanker that's about it.

    Collingwood & Craig McCrae
shouldn't rule out Tim Membrey playing in defence
    next year.
    The Pies defence and Howe,
    Moore, Maynard & Quaynor
    struggled in the same games
    this year.
    Membrey can kick goals up
forward but he also can swing
back to defend if the Pies
    defensive region is in trouble.

Need to see reef in the practice games as the second tall for me . Agree throw him in the deep end straight away to help fast track his development and then we’ll know if it’s worth pursuing.

I just think we have to give this guy time to settle into a position in the team. This past season, he played the 9 games and averaged 1.5 goals a game. At that avg, if he played a full season, he could have had a 35-goal season as a hybrid forward. Unfortunately for him, he was always first to be omitted or played as sub.
Looking at him at training he has put on size, he looks strong, and he has all the ability to play regular senior footy next season.
We are very skinny with our depth down back, l think Dean and Frampton are the first choice options, but l think McInnes has the ability to pass both quite quickly. So, in saying that, l wouldn't be surprised if Reef is playing round zero, ahead of Dean or Frampton.
I believe Howe, in particular, is a huge fan of Reef playing a role in the back 6....

He is fast. I like the ball in front of him.

If he is fit id play him from round one. If you wait weeks before you play him he might lose confidence. Im sure he will make mistakes but give him a decent run to prove his worth. Waiting weeks into the season to play him only puts more pressure on him and that wont be in his benefit.

Some forwards who transition to defense Moore Howe Tarrant for example shows it's not rocket science as some players who are used to leading into holes and spaces when playing as a forward have a natural instinct that allows to read incoming kicks from opposing midfielders when defenders
Don't over think it he is learning fast as most forward come defenders learn that spoiling craft first is phase 1 in transition from leading marking to more focused spoiling and blocking with body position in holes and leading routes.
Eventually his confidence and body size will improve so will his defensive over head marking, he will get stronger and smarter they have identified something obviously so give him a chance most forwards drafted take 3-4 years or more to develop Howe Moore Tarrant drafted as forwards ended up defenders because of natural football talent and raw ability to read the play all great spoilers in defense in beginning of transition process

This is a video for half way through the next season.....then we'll know. Stop hoping Dean n Frampton will get better....VFL players only. They failed to recruit a key defender.....it will be our downfall.....mark my words
