This performance by a dying woman is so moving. She knew she was terminally ill when she recorded these (she died 6 months later). I thought for sure she’d tear our hearts out with “ist dies etwas der Tod”, but instead she really got me with the phrase before it, “Wie sind wir wandermüde”. Her inflection on “müde” says it all. May her beautiful soul rest in eternal peace.

This was recorded just prior to her passing, and she was able to perform this so well ???? Amazing. There are singers who couldn't touch her, even in full health.

ONE of the greatest interpreters of Richard Strauss in the late 20th century. EVERYTHING she recorded from her luminescent DAPHNE to this glorious and heart felt "Im Abendrot" is deeply special. You sense it you feel it in your bones. I saw one of her last American recitals at Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena, California. She was and remains one of the Great Sopranos of The 20th Century.

I am stunned - as I always am - by this performance. Lucia sings with the angels.

Popp's late-life recording is a kind of memento mori, sung with certain knowledge of her impending death. Her voice is not strong but the tone retains all its gloried silver. Her knowingness was always her strongest suit. She could infuse her singing with uncommon intimacy for that reason. It's why you can't really listen to this document and not want to cry.

Come ali di vento attingono al volo che ci porta, ove il pianto diviene gioia / In quel mistero dove si vuole, celeri essere alfine quiete di pura luce.

Anyone know of the violin soloist here?

I assume it's the principal violinist of the LSO in 1993. I'll see if I can find my CD copy.

Rodney Friend (b. 1939) The great concertmaster of the London Symphony from 1964-1994. He played the solos in the iconic Popp/Tennstedt recording of the Four Last songs in 1980 as well!

The French Horn at the end of September......that horn solo and then the subsequent adagio ending of September just tears me up (however you care to pronounce Tear....either way is fine.)
