What did y'all think about the movie? I'm legit curious to hear from folks who didn't like it. Like people can like or dislike WHATEVER they want but social media discourse is akin to dumping gas on the fire and it's getting old

Sometimes it made me cringe, but mostly because it reminded me of my own childhood-
The parents who are shitting on this movie because "this movie is teaching our kids to be rebellious!" are the parents who saw too much of themselves in Mei's mom, and it made them SUPER uncomfortable when the movie said "hey, overbearing parents are bad, actually"
If they want something so obedient, then they should get a robot.

@@bluecrossfire2375 Yeah too many strict parents/guardians expect their kids to act like robots. Being too strict is going to make your kid more likely to rebel in secret and hide stuff from you. There is no such thing as a super obedient kid who's never tempted to rebel unless something's actually wrong.

I love how there are people saying that kids shouldn't see this movie because it's too "mature" but The Lion King and Tangled are perfect movies for kids even if they have murder, kidnapping and abuse in general, like "murder is ok but the mother asking if her daughter had her first period is just too much"

I thought Mother Gothel was showing an extreme side of parenting....but when that's the REALITY for so many children....I can imagine movies like this help them feel less alone. there's this idea that we shouldn't show kids the ugliness of adults but they experience that sh*t in real life I'd rather they had some mass media reflective of their situation instead of pretending all kids' lives are simply rainbows and butterflies

The fact that people were complaining about the period stuff pissed me off. It’s NOT inappropriate at all. It happens to every girl, and teaching them that is important. That whole mindset of “it’s inappropriate” is basically teaching girls that they should be ashamed of themselves and their developing bodies.
It's also teaching parents to parent based on what they find comfortable instead of considering what's best for their child.

@@josephstalin5751 It's a normal part of life for a lot of people. It's important for everyone to learn about it. What if you're a single dad with a daughter who just started her period. She's terrified because no one told her this would happen. A lot of people think they're dying when they first get their period because they aren't told its gonna happen, and it can be very painful and or a lot of blood. There's also a lot of misinformation about it in general. Sure it's not pleasant, there's plenty of things in life that aren't, but you can't just ignore it.

@@josephstalin5751 I didn't actually focus on you thinking it's gross. I explained why you can't just ignore it and not learn about it, even if you don't experience it. Like yeah, I never said it was pretty or amazing or anything. That would be lying. It sucks, and it is kinda grim when you think about it. I mean, I wouldn't calling shitting or pissing pretty. But it's something that happens and you do learn about those. You're warned about watching out for certain things, like cancer signs. That's important. There are important things to learn about periods too.
You thinking it's gross is relatively fine as long as it's not directed at the person going through it and you say it respectfully (which you didn't). But saying 'nobody wants to learn about that' is not only putting words in other people mouths (therefore not an opinion) but highly ignorant.
Also I definitely got taught all the 'gross' things that happen to penis's. It was just a part of biology class. Basic anatomy is kinda important to know since most people will experience it that way. Hope you actually try to understand what I'm explaining and listen to it, but that's your choice. That being said, I probably won't reply again because it's not really worth it. Have a great day and try to be respectful of others.

I saw a lot of parents my age (mid 30s) criticizing the movie for portraying a "rebellious" child not getting punished. The fact that the child was completely obedient to a fault and only "rebelled" after her mother traumatized and humiliated her, and constantly belittled or dismissed her interests, didn't really matter to them - the child "misbehaved," so they needed to be punished!
Says more about how terrible they are at parenting more than anything about the movie.
Yeah for real, that just says more about them as parents than anything else. Kids rebel for various reasons, especially when they are being abused. Maybe instead of wondering why your kid 'rebels' against you, learn why you're bad as a parent?
Well the adults that are mad at that detail were raised like that. You act out, you misbehave, you get punished, eventually. The reason why you break the rules is utterly irrelevant. I was raised the same way.
these are the people who maybe shouldn't have kids tbh. if you have a kid and expect them to be your little robot slave, that's disturbing. it's like they dont care that the mom is in the wrong here. it's good for kids to have their own minds.
it's crazy to see that take, like they completely missed the point and didn't even watch the movie. it's meant to be relatable to all folks but aside from growing up, it is largely about Asian parenting (particularly 1st-3rd gen) and generational trauma. the culture matters. her mom's supposed to be a dialed-down "Tiger mom." the only time Mei openly disobeyed her was taken personally and she completely lost it which is realistic.
her mom repeatedly embarrassed her (wasn't trying to be awful but showed she did not care about her daughter's feelings or considered her perspective), didn't respect her choices or trust Mei's judgment (shows in her comments and judgment of her friends), wants to be close but doesn't allow her to be honest or set boundaries, makes her feel like a bad person for her interests and being her age, had unreasonably high expectations, and basically everything she did made it very difficult for someone that young to be open and honest with her parent. if her mother wasn't allowing her to breathe and be human, especially at such an age, it's not surprising she eventually rebelled (or felt solace with her friends) and Mei wasn't exactly out there drinking and being a parent's worst nightmare. she also felt remorse for it.
the sad fact is that many Asian parents *would* double down like that audience wants but it would inevitably cause issues with their relationship and the kid's growing psyche. like did they not watch the movie at all?? especially finding the mom's fractured self in the forest? and it unfortunately doesn't always end nicely like with this family but starts the cycle again once they have children or causes irreparable damage... which the movie somewhat shows with the mom and grandmother, that I guess those viewers fell asleep for?

Honestly, the strangest thing I've seen about this film is adults saying that children shouldn't watch this film because it features and discusses puberty....a thing...THAT AFFECTS CHILDREN. My only guess is that some of the adults are actually guilty of what they're afraid of this movie reflecting in themselves. But at least Mei's mother actually tried to discuss her 'red peony blooming'.

I was laughing so hard at that scene, it was so awkward and hilarious. And honestly I really appreciate pixar including it as I cant remember a single pixar or recent animated movie that's ever acknowledged puberty and periods

Changing into the panda at school while hiding it from their mother is a classic teenager thing. There are so many things I found easier to tell my friends than my parents. Especially a parent as controlling as her mother. I wouldn’t call that an oversight.

I can't even bring myself to tell my mother about my entire online history at this point because it's so much and yet my friends know
frfr. I could relate to that analogy so much in highschool especially, where I met my best friend and started finding a lot of things out about myself. but did my parents ever know? NOPE, at least nothing I didn’t tell them myself. it’s really a matter of trust and being comfortable opening up around your parents, and for a lot of kids, they sadly can’t do that. because they’re afraid of the judgement they’ll receive. I was afraid, and I was right in the end. I was judged, they didn’t like my friend, and all these new things about me they’d rather stifle. sometimes it’s suffocating having to depend on people that dont like the majority of who you’re becoming.
Honestly, as a Norwegian, this outcry online is really bizarre to me. In my country we have children's shows, children's books and children's movies that deal with puberty, and I don't hear anybody here screaming "Think of the children!" Hell, we even have a children's book for like 6 year olds explaining where babies come from, that's actually how I first found out about reproduction when I was a kid. The fact that people are genuinely advocating for keeping children in the dark about what's happening to their bodies when they're like 11 is insane to me, you'd think we were living in the 1800's or something. Most 11 year olds already know every swear word in the book, having a movie that mentions periods isn't going to scar them for life, especially since a lot of them probably already have gotten their period at that age, as was the case with me. This attitude of shame does nothing but make young girls more uncomfortable with and ashamed of their own bodies, because if it's something adults consider to be taboo, clearly it must be something that they should be ashamed of, right?

The part where she found her mothers younger self crying really hit me. That whole scene where she leads her mother through the bamboo, and almost heals her mothers inner child is so deep, and so well done.

The thing is that some parents shifts the blame onto their children rather than addressing it and talking to them about it.
I use to be depressed I was diagnosed with it, all my parents did was simply ignore it and say shit like, “I do all this for you why aren’t you happy?” And the only person that actually talk to me about it was my little brother because he is going through similar things.

With the whole red panda period thing, the director actually said that she wanted to do red pandas more because China and Canada 's colors are red and white. Which to me seems ten times funnier.
Which makes it more unique since black and white pandas are usually the traditional animals representing China.
That makes sense especially now that Canada is a communist country just like China. 👍

The idea that a movie about things that roughly half of mankind goes through at some point is "unrelatable" is so laughable. Besides, you don't need to have personally experienced a thing to be able to emphathise with it. I may never have had a period, but I can still have empathy for someone going through those changes. Just like I can emphathise with the shock of turning into a red panda, even though it's not happened to me.
Did it ever occur to you that maybe they just don’t think it’s appropriate for children? Like… I don’t think any children’s movie ever depicts male reproductive functions.
@@ARCtheCartoonMaster I've already seen it mentioned that yes, this actually a problem. The realistic and child appropriate depiction of male puberty is barely covered by media. Which of course sucks, but it's not like female puberty has media like this either.

As a girl, I didn't find this movie to be relatable. But I was never into boy bands and it just seems weird people are getting so excited a period was brought up in this movie. I don't care that it is in there, it just isn't anything special. I kinda just found all the characters annoying. I also didn't like that no one reacted realistically to the shape shifting child in what is otherwise normal earth. Unless canadians are way weirder than I thought they were.
Turning Red is well worth the watch. If you can relate to a clown fish, a talking car, and a superhero, you can relate to being a teenager.

A part in the movie that shocked me in a peasant way is when Mei first transformed into the panda and Ming brought her pads thinking she got her period. She even said the word “Pads”! The fact the movie didn’t try to censor it by simply implying that it was a hygiene product with women’s health being so stigmatized was such a breath of fresh air

I was a lot like Mei as a child (minus the top grades). I'd even draw / write what I considered "steamy and hot" in diaries. I'd develop crushes on every cute boy I passed by in the hallway. My friends were crazy over Tokio Hotel and we were sure each of us would marry a member of the band. I was never made aware of periods. I remember starting to bleed one day at school, being terrified, stuffing toilet paper into my pants, and being laughed at by a group of boys when they saw a stain on my butt.
When I got home, I hid in the closet and refused to open the door for my mom when she got home because I was scared of what she'd say. Why do we have to be ashamed of something practically every young woman will have to go through? Why not prepare them once they're around the right age? Why not let them know it's okay and not something to hide?
Oh god. Not telling your kids about puberty should be considered neglect, same as if you never teach them how to read.

@@samovarsa2640 I actually managed to translate all the internalized social pressure into a sense of purified non-conformity, ie: the world literally had nothing for me, so why bother trying to follow it? It didn't help that I was going through the process of being in love for the first time. Wanting to be a part of somebody's life while at the same time not wanting to have any interaction with the world. Yeah, didn't end well. Heart crushed to pieces, soul torn in two... It wasn't pretty.

did everyone forget about that one time where Mei's mum locks her in a room with the intent of hiding her there for a month? the following scenes where she's banging her head off the walls, sobbing on the floor and viscerally hating her own body really speak to me as something a lot deeper than 'shes not happy cos periods'. her parents even talk about how "No one can see her like this", "I never wanted this for her" etc etc - definitely not the kinda shit you'd say bout natural body developments.
I interpreted the red panda as an allegory for mental illness, rebelliousness and the literal 'wild side' to mei's personality that's been suppressed by the adults in her life. I'm not saying that the panda ONLY represents those things and doesn't include periods or puberty, but I think the metaphor stretches way farther than what people are assuming.
It could be that her mother did suspect that Mei had some kind of "problem" when in reality she was just acting like a healthy child, the same way she assumed her daughter was being molested by the boy at the store and her friends were using her.
Mei is a normal healthy girl who's been treated like if there was something wrong with her interests, making her feel insecure.
Or disabilities, be they physical or mental 🥰
as someone who sobbed their eyes out nearly the entire movie because it was,, half triggering me, i agree. 100%. it spoke to me on such an in-depth level that i had to cuddle up with a friend and cry for a little following the movie.
I think for many people it respresents different things. For some mental illness. Some going through puberty. The fact many can relate is something special. it doesn't have to be one spefici thing or another.
@@amberace Thats what I like about it so much. The panda can represent literally anything that makes you different or feel less than or uncomfortable. Because everyone goes through different experiences and the Panda can represent almost anything.
Seeing Mei draw pretty tame stuff and having it considered as “sexy” or “smut” was so hilarious to me 😭 I remember being around her age and doing the same exact thing, even down to drawing that stuff in such a secretive way to keep the imaginary eyes away lmao

A lot of the time what’s considered as “explicit” when it comes to something a child made is greatly exaggerated, especially to the child themself or their overly-protective parent, so the other things she drew could very easily go in either direction, and frankly isn’t worth debating over

@@LuckyVine it’s not. The movie is poking fun at the mom for overreacting (as evidenced throughout the movie with her getting upset at a pre/early teen boy bands “gyrations”).
My boyfriend is a type 1 diabetic and he called me crying when he watched turning red and saw a diabetic character in the movie. That was all it took for him to convince me to watch it with him and it made me cry too, for different reasons. This movie does so much for so many people and even though I didn't absolutely love it the way I love a lot of other newer Disney/Pixar movies, I think it's really important and definitely worth watching

The whole period scene perfectly exemplifies Ming and her attitude to Mei. She thinks she knows what’s going on and thinks she all the answers because she genuinely believes she’s doing what’s best for Mei, but because Mei isn’t being open and honest she doesn’t realise she’s got an off reading until faced with something about her daughter at the worst possible time for Mei. She’s ultra prepared, but for the wrong thing.

In all honestly, I think that if a boy doesn't know about periods there is a problem. People forget boys may have wifes, girlfriends, friends who are girls, DAUGHTERS! The complaints I see about moms freaking out that their boys now have questions is DUMB. Your boys should know in an age appropriate way. Its a normal function. Its IMPORTANT.

Generally depending on my mood, my voice often fluctuates and can become monotone when I'm in more of a depressive or bored state. And I'm often criticized by my parents for showing "disrespect" or "acting like I'm bored" when I'm not trying to be, it's just how I sound at that point and time. So I like that this movie normalizes a character with a flat voice.
The thing that really made me go "really?" on the reactions for the film was that some parents felt that the period metaphors (and not so metaphors, no spoilers) were inappropriate for kids. People, your precious children will become teenagers one day. You will be forced to talk to a teen who is scared and confused by the development of their body and most likely will ignore you. Kill the stigma already and be good parents instead of complaining about a movie that will probably fill in your job in the future.
My grandmother got her first period at 8. My mother got her first one at 9. I didn't get mine until almost 14 and that was extremely abnormal. The people who don't want their kids learning about periods until they’re teenagers are the dumbest to me because if you don't explain these things to your daughters, they're going to be scared and confused when it first happens
and I can only imagine that if a parent isn't talking to their kids about reproductive changes that comes long with puberty when it becomes relevant for their age group, they're probably not talking to their kids about sex when they become teens either and thats also very concerning.
As an adult male, I REALLY appreciate what this movie is doing and teaching. It took me an EMBARRASINGLY long time to learn basic stuff about periods and what women go through, and it would have helped ME out in my teenage years if I actually had a better understanding of what girls went through in that time.

I went to a private school and I NEVER learned how the female body works. Hell, I barely learned how the male body worked. It was an embarrassingly long time for me, as well, to learn about all of that.
If anything, people blew that aspect out of proportion, like 2-3 times at most just Ming bringing up pads, while Mei and seemingly none of her friends have gone through puberty (maybe Priya, she had backup pads, iirc)
I fell in love with this movie so quickly as soon as Mei and her friends were introduced because it felt for the first time teenage girls were actually represented as teenage girls without trying to cover up or hide the "cringe"; like I started writing fanfiction when I was 12 and had obsessions over really niche interests, and they were large parts of my teenage-hood. I also found the part of hiding those things from your parents relatable too, because I did the same.
Yeah the cringe in this movie is honestly more reasonable since its a movie bout teenagers. Complete opposite of the use of cringe in the Emoji Movie
I love how it's showing the "pre-teen" stage even, I feel thirteen is around that. I feel that kids these days are skipping that stage. I remember shopping at justice, playing with dolls, and all that when I was 13. It was awesome
The crushes also feel like early teen crushes. It’s not dreaming about The One, it’s having the feeling of crushing on someone and processing what it means. We see Mei make the realisation that she’s crushing on Devon, and celebrity crushes are a fact of life. The fact there’s no love interest is refreshing to see.

Some of the fanfiction I wrote back in the day was so horrible. I look back & think, "I thought this was good?" But I was a kid exploring my creativity & feelings. Also, I password locked those stories. Didn't want Mom seeing them. So yeah, that all sounds very realistic.
Im a female, and the parts about puberty was literally SO relatable. The whole boy band thing, well, i was never really into them, but my friends were, and it was nice to see that in mei and her friends
I also never understood the appeal of boy bands, never understood why so many girls are crazy about a bunch of generic "pretty" boys. I was never a Fan of One Direction, never saw a Fan of Big time rush (I enjoyed their show more)And Especially, I never understood what people my age saw in Jasnten Biber! There are coming of age stories about boys where underage boys as young as 12 and 13 have explicitly sexual experiences and they are never criticised for being too inappropriate. When I was in high school I even had one such book as required reading in an English class.

I also don't get the backlash, I watched it with my brother and we could both relate to her struggles and loved it, the kind of movie I'd gladly watch again. Yes, the period thing is also there, but that's also part of being human and honestly for us, the movie was both an allegory of that and going from a kid to a teenager. I think that the people crying out there claiming that the movie is about disobeying your parents or inappropriate, either didn't watch it, fell asleep and never watched the end... or they watched something else, a lost tape from a paralell universe.

@@freshcorn1431 Yeah! Good point, this is not even close to be the first film or even animated series that present kids doing something against the parents' will. And I think it's reasonable, it's more common than we might think, to have parents pushing their wishes/expectations on to their children (often with good intentions), without considering what their kids actually like/want/expect or by default they consider the young ones can't have a correct judgement for themselves. It's not a surprise to have this as a common topic.

@@freshcorn1431 Exactly! Mei did rebel against her mother, but the movie treated it as part of life and did not encourage it (as shown in the climax, which is my favorite part of the movie). Ming also dealt with the same treatment from her mother and was unknowingly becoming like her own mom, plus the trauma of accidentally hurting her mother in her panda form. In the end, Ming accepted Mei for WHO she is, and not who she wants her to be (the "perfect little Mei-mei"). She realized and accepted that her expectations were hurting her, although it is understandable why she is the way she is.
I watched this movie with my adult sized kids, one of their BFF's and my spouse. We all loved it. I found it totally relatable though my teen years were mid to late 80s and my obsession were big hair bands, not boy bands. I remember being so pissed when I tried to join the Poison Fan Club and my mother threw away the mail they sent me. She said I was going to end up doing drugs or some stupid shit. Well jokes on her. To this day I am the only member of my extended maternal family who has never done recreational drugs and I'm 48. But I still like heavy metal.

I watched plenty of "coming of age" stories as a little girl that was centered around boys and they were never criticized as "unrelatable". I can't believe people are making such a big deal about the period scene in the movie. It is so tame! I WISH there had been a scene in a movie like that when I was a little girl as a way to normalize period talk. Instead, I just had to be surprised by it one day at school, bled through my pants, and had to walk around all day just completely embarrassed and not knowing what to do. Little girls deserve to see period talk as normal and little boys can still enjoy a movie and relate to it without everything being directly for them.

Look at old or foreign art, historical documents, and historical clothing. Where in many cultures and old paintings centered in those times people were very open about their bodies. Look at the Renaissance period. In Japan they even have families who bathe together and some public mixed bathing hot springs. They still have separate ones for people who do not wish to partake. Therefore leaving it up to an individual. Allowing people to be comfortable. Or how about the old settlers and women who had to breast feed and do chores? What about the Greeks and their naked art/open breast togas for breastfeeding mothers/when it got hot? So why in modern society did we roll backwards on that? Why should we be ashamed of something we have been going through since the dawn of time??
We are also very open about mental health and s*x education in our family. Which I am grateful for. It taught me to be more open minded and have more respect for s*x. Not only that but relationships as well. it wasn't something to do because everyone was or for fun. It was serious. We were treated with respect and allowed to have a back and forth with our parents. Treated like people with actual feelings and ideas. Allowed to trip and fall. If my 12 year old brother can know about periods and be fine? So can you.

I absolutely adore this movie. And as someone who grew up with her guardians expecting so much from me, it hit hard. I as expected to be straight, Christian, to go into ROTC and go into the army. To become a doctor or go into a more "fulfilling" career than art or becoming a streamer. And no matter how many times I argued saying it wouldn't be fulfilling if I don't enjoy it, I was always wrong. I went through so much once I became a teenager, and I didn't have a support system. When I went through heartbreak I needed to suck it up. When I was stressed I needed to suck it up and deal with it. It wasn't until my senior year of high school that I finally had enough. And I made me own decisions. I chose my own courses and didn't ask permission any more. And since I chose to leave ROTC, I was making a bad decision and ruining my life (according to them)
I want to watch this movie with then, and see how they react.

I love the scene with Mei and her ancestor. The smile she gave Mei when she keep the panda. Her ancestor was happy that finally one of her grandchildren wanted the gift she gave them.
And it’s such a positive twist on the whole notion in families of doing things for the sake of your ancestors. “Your great-xyz went through so much worse you should be grateful!” Etc. It sucks when families imply that your deceased relatives that you’ve never met and never can meet wouldn’t approve of you, especially as a kid where your self identity is already unstable. This is just a long winded way of saying it made me super happy too LOL.

Basically if they think those dead ones could be there right now, would they be telling you how you should live your life in this very specific way or would they want you to just be the best version of yourself?
I love how this movie makes it clear that it’s okay to be a kid. With how social media, television, and film is influencing this current generation of kids into growing up faster, I appreciate that Turning Red *exists* to teach them to take things slowly.

As a teenage trans boy, I LOVED this movie. This movie sparked a conversation between me and my mom, and we talked a lot about puberty and she told me I shouldn't be afraid to hide anything from her and that she'd support me and love me no matter what. Plus, it was very relatable to me personally, since I've had a lot of arguments and a lot of fights with my mom over a lot of things, like my choices to come out to my classmates, but we resolved things in the end. I love this film, I love Mei, I loved the artstyle, I love the accuracy of awkward girl friendships (yeah, most of my friends are girls, what'd you expect?) from the awkward art, the way they speak with each other, Priya reading YA novels like twilight, it was so fun for me!

The part where the mom was disapproving of the friends was a big part for me. I mean the trauma and emotional damage was also big but when mei went something along like “my mom doesn’t really like you” and her friend looked so upset. I immediately went they’ve put the gay pain in full focus. Having a friend you’re super close to and your mom sensing something “off” and not wanting you to be influenced by them. There’s nothing inherently wrong that your friend did but there’s just enough chemistry that your parents catch it and get over protective. One mistake and they use that to force you apart. Any baby crush you get suddenly feels crushing (ha)
Also the journal part hit HARD. My mom did the same thing. She had me write in a journal and PROMISED not to look in it. I left it at home once and she found out I was dating my best friend thru it. Oh the fight was BAD. I still have issues writing in journals now. It felt very real and as a young teen you really feel like every stresser is so big and crushing and any new thing is either really exciting or terrifying and I think this movie showed that well

This was an unapologetic, aggressive and endearingly honest movie. Definitely a good watch, and worth a couple of rewatches: so many fun little things crammed into the background, and so many delightful animation quirks that pop out...it's a delight.

Honestly, I work in schools, and I'm not fully convinced most administrators at schools have ever been kids or teenagers. No idea how else to explain some of the decisions I see on a daily basis from the adults in the room. So you might be on to something here as to why people don't find this movie relatable.

God too many adults/ peers I’ve come across act this way. I’m 23 and some people already start acting as if they’ve never been a teen/child.
I worked as a paraprofessional, it was k-8th grade, and none of the admin knew how to treat the teenagers, or the troublesome 4-6th graders. I was 19 at the time so it was super easy for me to talk to them. All of the other adults told me to just hand them referrals and send them to the office to be dealt with. All I had to do was come up to them and ask, " why are you doing that, man?" or "hey, that's stupid, and its going to get you hurt." I swear if they just treated the kids like people instead of problems they wouldn't have any.
I think the reason why these sorts of people don't understand what it's like to be a teenager, is probably because they were treated as if they were adults who should know better rather than teenagers who are likely to make mistakes as they were growing up. And while does not make their behavior justifiable, it does make sense.
Here is my take on the movie:
It is not my personal cup of tea. It had some storytelling choices that made me scratch my head and I didn't feel it actually brought its themes full-circle for a satisfying conclusion. BUT. It is an important movie that I hope is very impactful for people. It doesn't have to be something I liked or got invested in. It doesn't have to be for me. Because it's going to be a beloved story for many others. It portrays the struggles kids have quite well and has endearing moments that many people will really latch onto. We need more coming-of-age stories that don't shy away from the true growing-up experience and let kids see their full selves on-screen

respect! I love this film for its energy, animation, and style. it’s got a story about an expective and judgmental mother and a growing teen girl that I can relate to. All the criticism about the themes in this movie that “shouldnt be shown to children” baffles me. I would have loved this movie when I was younger, as much as I do now. I feel like a lot of those adults missed the point by at least a few miles.

I recently watched this movie with my mom and with her being pretty conservative I was worried she was going to make the same asinine comments about how "showing kids periods is bad because reasons!" or "child rebellious because of strict and overbearing parenting? must be punished!" but it turns out the only thing she was annoyed about was the fact that the movie didn't come out when I was a pre-teen so she could show it to me and make the puberty talk go a lot easier for her 🤣
I love how this Pixar movie actually sounds more realistic. When Abby's mom says something sounds like stripper music and when Mei's mom rants about drugs and perverts.
Reminds me of how my actual mom and her friends gossip about each other and talk about their own children.
i also wanna point out how theres so much greens and reds used in this movie. Red, of course, is the main color of the movie, while green is the anti red. I like how her mom and the rest of the women in the family are wearing green, symbolizing that they reject their red pandas. Not once have I seen Mei wear green in this movie, it's ALL shades of red so her accepting her red panda in the end was pretty obvious even from the colors alone

The scene with the diary got to me and made me laugh so hard because that’s almost exactly how I was when I was thirteen. The dynamic Mei has with her friends reminds me so much of myself and my best friend. Even their concert goal (but instead of a teen boy band my friend and I are Sigur Rós fans - which is how we met in the first place).

As a teenage girl myself, I almost lost my mind when the mom started talking about periods. No one ever talks about them in children's movies, and they are treated like something to be disgusted and ashamed of in other genres. Hearing it discussed as something simple and open made me almost cry. I remember getting it for the first time as feeling revolted and like a freak. I just felt kind of seen, you know?
That's how I felt too. I paused the movie and cried because when I first got my period, it was so embarrassing and I had white shorts on (I don't wear them anymore) and I remembered feeling like a freak. Idk just seeing the mom being so sweet and casual about pads just made me emotional
YEEEEES. I started spotting a few months before I actually had my full flow and it was so awkward because i was so young and with a friend that was even younger than me. Kudos to her mom for being really casual about it even though I was only, like, 10. Unlike my mom who kinda made me feel like I couldn't be having it because hers didn't come until she was 14 ;u; happens at different times to different people, everyone. Don't make kids feel weird when their body decides to go turbo on the puberty train.

Yeah i remember i kinda had to figure everything out myself. My mom was maybe too casual about? I had stayed home cause i felt off and just weird and maybe about an hour into hiding i noticed i was bleeding and found some panty liners cause i had remembered asking my mom about pads one time and she said girls will bleed monthly cause thats just kinda how it is. She didn’t really know the why and everything just dont use douches and keep yourself clean. She had noticed all the disposed liners in the garbage and put it together that i had gotten my period. Just showed me a pad and that was it.

Honestly I have never related to a movie more than turning red, in terms of its portrayal of young teen girls and their friendships + overall lives
even though I don't see myself in the parts of the film that discuss Mei's culture, I've never seen another kids movie talk about puberty the way Turning Red did
And past that, it was also just really enjoyable to watch. The animation was really cute and I loved how they made young teens actually _look_ like young teens, and I also enjoyed the scenes in the bamboo forest when the ritual is performed. It was such a beautiful visual to show Mei and her family giving up their panda forms
I find it insane how mad people got over this film considering how unique it is. Again, this is the only film I've ever seen portray discussions of puberty while still being lighthearted and cute, but also realistic (you know...aside from the giant red panda)

The show honestly got a lot of backlash for so many awful reasons and honestly it makes me wonder how the parents who were upset about this film raise their kids.
My mom was a bit like this… and i will say.. now in early thirties, my mom STILL keeps family matters away from me to “protect” me. It’s terrible. Messed up today cause my mom KEPT STUFF FROM ME. I went an texted my uncle to find out that she didnt tell me that their dog PASSED AWAY two weeks ago. And it was asking if they wanted another dog to be a sibling to theirs 🤦♀️she texted me later telling me this bit. Like “thanks, glad to know 5 minutes or 20 hours away you will not tell me anything” she hated metal music that i love, cause she thought it was the source of my depression. Umm… yeah.
As a child raised (not asian part but the keep things away over protective bit) i love my family, i understand why she did it, but i wish she would of communicated with me more. It's a common trait in narcissists, and even if your parent isn't abusive or a narcissist, their parent could have passed on some of their bad parenting skills onto their children which can cause issues like shown in Turning Red.
It becomes a big problem when negative anything (emotions, loss, etc) are just blocked out in favor of a happier, more perfect seeming image.
Some parents intentionally block out all negativity in their kids lives in fear that they'll become depressed, but as a result they just discourage healthy behaviors like crying or showing negative emotion in fear that it is harmful.
It's honestly really just interesting and sad how much influence parents have that they're so ignorant of at times.
I can only the rage comes from exposing kids to periods and puberty forces that conversation for parents that didn't want to have that conversation. Like any parent who was ready to talk to their kids about puberty would've already done it by then or used the movie as an entry point or teaching aid for a bigger discussion. Theres no reason to get mad at turning red unless you as the adult are uncomfortable with puberty (even though you're literally a parent and have gone through sex, puberty, etc yourself in order to become a parent) and or you didnt want your child to know about an extremely common biological process that will be very relevant to the child very soon...for some reason.
I think a lot of adults have unhealed shame, trauma and immaturity regarding their own bodies and typical biological processes and didn't process or deconstruct them prior to becoming a parent and that is very concerning to me and calls into question their motives and expectations for becoming a parent in the first place.

Well, first of all, congrats on staying true to yourself, a lot of people couldn't say the same, but I gotta say it's more complicated than that... Parents do know better majority of the time, but if your parents have their traumas and toxic behaviors, I'm afraid there isn't much a kid can do, you just had bad luck with your parents/family and it will destroy much of your life too, there's no much to it sadly... Also kids not knowing much or being smart enough or having enough experience to know what to do or what they want... You need some lucky event to get out of a toxic family as a kid, I don't think it's an issue that can be fixed.

When parents tell you not to touch the stove that's a safety issue that's possible to prove, when they pass on bigotry or hurt their kids (wether out of maliciousness or something being wrong in their psyche) a child needs to know that's not right and they're allowed to seek help and generally not accept that as normal. Too many people took the phrase "well I turned out fine" as an excuse and it's fucked. Had that same experience when my parents pulling (empty) threats to force me to vote on Ferdinand Marcos Jr. (some corrupt prick) on Philippines' election day on May or I will be kicked out of the house. I want to vote on Leni Robredo because her track record as a politician is cleaner than other candidates, plus voting for that Marcos Jr. is already stupid when you hear actual facts that he's a crook. Instead I will just lie to them outright that I voted their idolistic martyr. They used to grow up on Martial Law and say its "the golden age", yet they also add that people should remain on inside their houses all the time from that era.
This kind of stuff that I can't even control motivates me to have a high paying job in the future and live alone on my own entertainment. No more naggings, no more restrictions, no more gaslighting bullshit. I want my mental disorder meds to fully continue instead of stopping them because "they're expensive" or "you can overcome this on your own". I want to learn how to use a skateboard because I find it fun and they're another good transportation alternative, stop telling me not to do because "its dangerous" when I cant learn how to fall properly and use protective gear. I want to be alone, but have alot of resource to sustain what I want. I don't want to have children and go childfree in my whole living life, but i'm fine with finding a future partner with the same childfree ideals as me. I just want to be free, but it may take years to get what I want.

Yepp, and also, it works especially well if you consider the panda as not just as a metaphor for puberty, but for your 'true self' specifically. Mei got popular when she stopped trying to be so perfect and instead socialized with the kids and had fun with all of them and actually expressed herself. The scene where the kids suddenly see the panda in the bathroom reminded me of one time I was on a school trip, and I decided to dress up nice and cute and let my hair out instead of wearing the boring, constricting old stuff I usually did, and one classmate just stared at me in disbelief, not even recognizing me for a moment. It's that sort of freedom that you allow yourself, that makes other people notice you. So looking at that plot that way, I felt it went really well with the whole 'learning to become your true self' message ^^

Hiding under the bed also shows at least a healthy level of trust in her parents. She doesn't trust her mother to approve of her friends and lifestyle, but she does trust her to not go snooping around her room. If she didn't have at least confidence that her privacy would be respected they would have hidden all that stuff at one of the friend's houses. Though confidence was eventually broken that does indicate it's not a regular occurrence.
Oh heck yeah. When I was a teen I was reading a smutty fan fic and I shut down the browser before leaving for school. I think it saved the last session and my mother saw it and I got told off for it, as if it was any of her business. But my mother sucked and was abusive when I look back on my childhood so I cut her out of my life when I was an adult.
The proper response to finding stuff like that is to first off, not go into a persons room uninvited (and people wonder why others struggle with boundaries, it starts with the parents) but if it's in a more public space, like a living room or on an unmarked tape, book, whatever, don't make a big deal about it. Simply let them know that some of their stuff is probably stuff that should stay in their room if it's something that is quite personal.

As a person who was once a teenager, I thought it was nice. I have my own issues with my parents, but it was nice to see a mom love her daughter and a dad support his child. And in the end they all came out of it with better relationships and stronger sense of self. It was nice. It’s real, it’s a bit raw, and it’s really unapologetic. And being a teen is real, raw, and unapologetic.

I'm late after a year, but anyways... I didn't see the movie in the cinema, but rather was impressed by the animation as well as feeling terribly nostalgic by the time I was in middle school. I wasn't into boys bands much, but I was totally *in love* with anime. I still love them by the way, but god damn we're being teens for such a short period of time. 😫
i honestly feel this is THE MOST relatable coming of age story ever from disney. yes, it’s cringey, BUT THATS THE WHOLE POINT! puberty is the epitome of cringe, and that’s ok! it is literally the most embarrassing part of your life, but it is critical for making you the person you are today. its exciting to find a movie that actually covers all that geared towards kids.
if people are cringing in a bad way towards it, it's not for the same reasons someone else cringes, likely not even at the same parts of the movie

Which is weird considering that many disney movies center around a kid disobeying their parents in some way. I feel like I see a lot of hate for that kind of theme anyway if it doesn't feature an amoral teenager like Lady Bird like I've seen a lot of people hating on Katie Mitchell and Flint Lockwood for doing this exact same thing without understanding their point of view. Like I understand hating on a kid if they're being rebellious to the point of breaking laws and being just general mean people but these characters are just following their dreams that their somewhat overprotective parents happen to dislike.

i can't help but notice that the internet consistently goes up in arms about female centric movies. people lost their minds over turning red because of the fact that it centers around a girl going through puberty, people were calling barbie anti-men which is FAR from the actual message of the movie. there's something to be said about how twitter in particular will write off a film that has even just vague themes regarding feminism because they think it will only resonate with a female audience. i've talked to men and women alike who loved BOTH movies because the messages aren't just applicable to women and girls. just because the story is about a girl doesn't mean it's automatically going to alienate boys. no one complained when everything was about men in fiction. it really gets you thinking 🤔
i saw this film and it IMMEDIATELY became a favorite comfort movie for me. I watched it like 6 times in a week at one point. Three times in English, once in Mandarin, once in Japanese, and once in Vietnamese. I have chilled out on it since, as i've been slurped into UA-cam content again, but man do I just love and resonate with Turning Red so much
As a guy in their late 20s I could related to this 100% because I remember having to deal with my strict Asian parents in early 2000s. Having them hover parent constantly and making sure everything was perfect.

I feel like a point often being left out of turning Red is the catalyst for Mei really starting to lie to her mother is that Mei has been doing all she can by her mother for a long time, and the one thing she wanted was to go to the concert and when her mother didn't listen to how much Mei loved it, the dissent really started because Mei felt ignored and no longer saw a point in trying to keep it up anymore. This does boil down to simple "miscommunication" but the girl did a full PowerPoint presentation! It was probably this moment that resonated most with me I suppose, where as a teen you're doing your best to convey yourself and things you love and trying to bridge that gap and it instead is written off as "dumb teenage phase thing". Teenagers have a lot of phases but I think writing them off all together has always been a bad reaction by adults - because one day one of those phases is going to stick and you're going to be the unsupportive parent. Especially when we know that age is all about experimenting and finding yourself. Most teens have that moment, the moment you just snap and question it all. Why are you doing these things? Why are your parents an authority? People tend to focus on the idea as a whole but it was definitely this one act, to me, that really changed their relationship.
Yes!!! It reminded me of something I did once. I cry a lot but I cried in front of my parents once because they said I couldn't go to a sleepover. I've always been a straight-A student, no drugs, no sneaking out or drinking. And proud of it. I told them I don't even bother asking them if I can do things anymore because I know they will always say no so I always told my friends "I can't" instead of even asking. I was crying telling my mom I never ask for anything so when I asked now it was REALLY important. I was always feeling left out never able to hang out even with girls only sleepovers. Thankfully I was able to do the sleepovers more often with only specific people and as long as I left early 😅
this was exactly what I took away from the movie too.
The feeling of being ignored hurts so much, and it literally pushed us to become dumb teenagers that just ended up figuring things out on our own. It's not ideal, we just wanted someone, anyone, to listen to us and help us feel validated in our feelings. That's why I can't get behind these shows and things that force kids and teens to be good, you have to listen to them.

I was a late bloomer when it came to all the teenage stuff like rebellion and finding yourself. It wasn't that long ago that I became an adult, but the movie strongly resonated with me because I had only started figuring things out for myself during my late teens (coz school and family pressure and all). I never had a friend group like Mei did during my teen years, but I had a couple of friends who were in them, so I actually saw a lot of my old classmates in them. The early 2000s nostalgia hit me like a truck, but Mei and her family and friends felt way too familiar to me, so I can say that this movie has a very special place in my heart.
I love how openly this movie shows how it feels to be a teenage girl. It only makes sense people would hate on it, because everything teenage girls like/do seems to be the worst thing ever and soooo embarrassing. When in reality, it's all in good fun! And this movie shows it well

I know some people don't like teenagers and that's fine but the way Mei was acting was nothing compared to some other teenagers they praise like Lady Bird for instance. Every kid is going to fight with and disobey their parents at pretty much all ages but unlike most teenagers, it doesn't sound like Mei has done anything horrible, like she just wants to see a concert. The mom is the one that's being too hard on her.

Maybe because I'm a guy I actually find this movie even more fascinating, because it's interesting to see the world from girl's perspective. Yeah, I never dealt with female puberty and was never into boy bands, but I could still relate with many of the teenage issues. For instance, I often played Doom when my mother wasn't around.

Turning Red is definitely a really cute and wholesome movie. I love how there were some relatable moments and the characters were really good. I definitely love the art style. Pixar is reaching new strides and I am excited for the future
Okay I didnt even think about this before but when he said "I liked this more than Luca" I realized that they're basically the same premise? But NO ONE had an issue with Luca. Or the fact that he ran away from home, or did something dangerous, or disobeyed his parents. So do these people have an issue with the rebellious children or do they have an issue with the rebellious child being a girl?
It's more stemming from the political undertones and hidden stuff. I'm not going to explain my opinions on it, but there a few moments that may be questionable for some parents. The my panda my choice, an ouja board, twerking, and "stripper music." These are just a few things I've seen being discussed.

I think a big part of the issues stems from the critics saying things like “unapologetically horny” in the reviews of a kids movie. Also, this has a similar premise as Luca, but it tackles more adult themes than Luca does. Brave also had a girl who acted out and was rebellious and did dangerous things, and no one complained. And it’s not like Merida was much older than this character either. He calls her a young adult, but she’s turning 16 I believe in the movie.
@@FfStar yeah I do understand that. I'm Christian myself so I do see that point of view but I think some of those points are putting far too much projection onto a kids movie. It's a movie about puberty and theyre actually tackling it instead of sidestepping it. Children need to see stuff like this so that they know what they're going through is normal. I understand the age thing but if they put it at pg-13 that keeps it from all the girls who start this much much earlier. I think pg is perfectly fine, it's parent guided as it should be. But turning the movie off after 5 minutes and calling it "demonic" as I've seen some youtubers do is just way too far.

Most parents already do a horrible job at introducing kids to puberty so really they should be happy that they have a fun movie that really talks about those things. I do agree that there are some lines and some parts of the movie that are a little iffy but for the most part, unless your child is at the age where they're going through similar things themselves, it's gonna fly right over their heads.
I laughed my ass off at the whole scene of her drawing under the bed and the mermaid drawings. Absolutely the funniest most relatable part of the movie. And the part that made me cry was Mei's dad telling her that the version of her she's being when she's with her friends when she's being herself made him laugh. I never had that as a kid, my parents thought I was just weird and I couldn't really be myself at home at the risk of being considered annoying. Telling his daughter that that part of herself is a good thing was really important and beautiful.

I love how the mother never actually looks actively impending and never looks evil, she only does when she gets extremely angry towards the end, it makes it seem like she is just as in the right in her world as the main character's
I really do too. Especially because so many things will want to fall into the mean "tiger mom" stereotype for Asian mothers. And I love that this movie gives a lot of layers to the mother and she is extremely loving and caring, you can tell that while Mei is dealing with a lot of guilt she actually still does love her mom and wants to make her proud and loves being around her. Like I loved the scenes with them at the temple because I was like "awww, I love that there is conflict but the relationship is still filled with love."

Basically all I knew about this movie was that it mentioned tampons and stuff as a normal part of a teenage girl's life. I was basically like "Oh, that's cool, I'm glad they went there, the societal discomfort of mentioning periods is dumb" but otherwise I wasn't super interested in it. But now that someone has actually covered the MOVIE instead of getting all weirdly hyped up about the word "tampon," I think it sounds amazing and I actually want to watch it. So GG, you convinced me to see this instead of just appreciating the token period mentions from afar, lol.
I turned 14 a few months ago, and Turning Red was the most accurate representation of teenagers I've seen in a while. I loved the scene where she -tecnically- writes fanfiction, I mean that's all I did last year so I felt really connected, target audience reached, pixar

As a woman raised in a strict but loving household, I relate HARD to Meilin. I was peak cringe, awkward teen girl who drew smut and tried too hard. I think the animation lent to the hyperactive feeling of the early 2000s middle school experience.

I can relate myself every one loves you but the moment you mess up or want something for yourself its a problem. Or when I cosplay everyone is obsessed with my costume and wants pictures but when I take it off and walk back in I don't exist. The movie points out so many valid points i couldn't list them all.
Mei going and doing everything really resonated with me-- I teach english in Korea which, while not the same as China, does have a lot of similar cultures around the importance of 'initiative' in education. When I was in the capital, I had students who were going to upwards of 12 'academies' ~3 hour afterschool classes that deep-dive into specific subjects. English, Science, Math, Art, Dance, Sports, etc. Seeing Mei doing so much reminds me so much of my students, and all the things that they did and had to do to keep their parents happy.
Also one thing I LOVE about pixar animations is their textures. I might not like the models for the characters in turning red, I swear to god I want Mei's sweater. It LOOKS soft. The fact that an animated sweater LOOKS soft and cozy is incredible

A hundred thousand times YES! No matter what any spokesperson for a company says, it's always down to this. If a company thinks they can get a better bottom line by being nice to you, they will. If they think they can treat you like crap and it won't hurt their net profit (or even increase their profit), they will.

It's refreshing to see a movie that doesn't have the "Asians should stay in Asia" message and actually explores what it's like to be a Chinese-Canadian with the message it shares. It's also great to see how it depicts teenagers as awkward and fallible.
The back and forth between the mother and daughter is very relatable; every teenager has gone through this during their life.
If there is one country from Asia that I really sympathize with the need to leave it, that would be China (north Korea too, but that's kind of a given).
And it's not that I inherently dislike immigration, I just think that there are questions with how we handle it, but that's another story.
What movies have the “Asians should stay in Asia” message? I’m going to assume movies that come from china because I can’t think of a single western movie with that theme in a long time.

I remember watching the trailer for the film, when I first saw it, I thought the movie would just be straight up weird, no necessarily bad, but just weird.
But then I watched the actual movie and it’s _definitley_ weird, but like in a good way, and I really enjoyed it
I like this non scripted video where you just let your thoughts flow. It was really organic like listening to a friend describe it in conversation which was such a easy way to consume the content (not that your videos aren’t typically)
I watched this with my 8 year old daughter during her Spring Break and it hit me with way more emotion than I expected. Knowing she’s growing up and puberty is coming and our relationship will soon change. Then when her mother told her she was sorry if she learned to sacrifice her own well being to take care of everyone else, I could’ve sob. Hit so close to home. I have that exact concern for my own daughter. It’s interesting because it’s perceived in animated movies the message is being directed at the children watching but Turning Red holds a mirror up to us parents, telling us to let our kids be themselves and grow into themselves. This isn’t a movie for the 5 year olds watching. Sure they’ll love the cute red panda and the action, but the story isn’t for them. This is for the tweens getting ready to enter teen hood. And for us parents getting ready for that change too. It speaks to both of us. I loved it. I’d love to see Pixar make more movies directed at the older kids. They don’t all have to be for the little ones.

There is definitely a gap in the market for media aimed at older kids. I've noticed the shows that feature more realistic older kids tend to get a more invested following, like Gravity Falls, the Owl House, Amphibia etc.

I think the scene that shocked me the most, moreso than drugs or tampons or whatnot, is where the mom legitimately accuses someone of being a pedophile- IN A PIXAR MOVIE. It caught me off guard, but I would still consider it a movie for kids, maybe 10-12+.
yeah that was really surprising when I watched it today. like dang that's a heavy accusation... but stuff like that is good to include in kids movies, could be a good lesson learned or just for parents when it goes after kids heads
Tbh I'm glad this movie threaded more "controversial" lines, it was very refreshing to see. Today's media seems extremely dumbed down sometimes which pisses me off. Plus, kids should know about the dangers of pedos anyway

i think it is a masterpiece.. every teenager experienced puberty not just girls. this movie just shows how hard it is to grow up. and i watched the movie 3 dimes at Launchday.
Finally! Someone else who loved the movie!! I watched it with my friend this weekend, I went in thinking it's just another Disney movie with a weird art style. But I'm so happy I watched it, for me it was really relatable and I didn't mind the characters or story. It all came together perfectly and now is my favorite movie lol
I felt the diary drawing scene in my SOUL. I used to write stories about a girl going to summer camps and holding hands or making out with the hot guy. Those got me so steamed up and I'd read them over and over. I found a few in an old box a few weeks ago, and BOY, were they CRINGE. 😆 But I got some good laughs out before I threw them away. That's what Turning Red is all about. That very relatable moment where puberty hits all of us and we're struggling to understand who we are and deal with a flood of hormones at the same time. Whether you menstruate or not, all people can appreciate this coming of age story.
Oh god yes 😅 My cringe writing was a 49 chapter fanfiction called "beam me up Goku" which was some sort of crossover between Dragon Ball Z and Star Trek Voyager. It was soooo bad but soooo fun XD

@@wolfgang3385 I was obsessed with this one girl when I was 13 and in my English class we had to write a poem and mine was about her.(We didn't have to present it thank God) I guess I haven't changed much between 8th grade and 12th grade because after 3 years of not seeing her I like the same girl. I think I've chilled though. I can actually sorta talk to her now.

I watched this shortly after it came out. I thought it was pretty cute, and the mother/daughter dynamic going from obedient to rebellious child over the course of the movie was interesting, especially with the use of the red panda as a metaphor for changing. The hiding of things (money and information) under her bed felt so real because Meilin was doing exactly what a lot of kids do at that age: try to hide stuff (physically and mentally) from their parents, because they're terrified of what the reaction will be. Overall, super cute movie that is worthy of re-watching.
I related to this movie a lot!! The red panda is a metaphor for change, agreed! (Spoilers) Mei keeping her panda is symbolism for how she chose to embrace the changes and her inner “beast” instead of hiding it and putting it away (like her family did and wanted Mei to do).
I agree and I think it is definitely worth researching because there are a lot of things you probably missed at first
The red panda metaphor loses its point by the end of the movie though. Everyone decides to hide their red panda personas despite the movie being marketed as needing to embrace it.
@@YujiUedaFan everyone except Mei of course. Which was the point. She decided to embrace it and break tradition. But it's not surprising her mother and the rest could not, as keeping it suppressed was a thing very heavily ingrained into them.
6:42 attention to detail moment, even the Canadian symbol on her shirt looks like a red Panda going "Argh!!" Or "Rawr!!!" 😆
