I liked the 488, need to be opened up to properly run, also needed a new carb with high jet. Some never had that. Also had the 680, vibratingest saw I have ever handled. 30 seconds and my hands were numb, I ended up chopping it up into a internal display demonstration saw.
I have complete 488 but it needs to be put back together back air cover is slightly craked.but looks just like his..I bought a carb and coil for it just haven't put it back together..I started my buisness with 488.about 5 year ago..was taken care of by my mentor
28 sounds nice! :) -12F in Minnesota this morning. It warms up to 19 degrees for a high tomorrow. Plan on heading to the woods! It is all what you are used to.
Nice saws It's - 6 F below where I am at.I think cold is just relative to where your at I've been in Whittier Alaska at 10 below and that felt colder then Fairbanks at 25 below zero .
Nice. I have a Shindaiwa 300. I bought it for $15 at auction last Summer. It runs/cuts great. It didn’t need any work. It’s in great condition. I have all the original paperwork too. I intend to grow a Shindaiwa collection.
I really want a shindaiwa 731sx which is just the red version of the Echo 7310 but unfortunately it's only available on the asian/euro and Australian markets I am going to try and convince a noted echo/shindy dealer in Fairbanks AK to order a few!! They are definitely a sharp looking saw!!!!!
Nice clean saws! I love the little 488. That's a sweet looking saw. It's been below zero for over a week here. Generally its about 15 to 20 here this time of year. I hate the bitter cold so I don't blame you!
I bought a used well worn 490 15 years ago as my first saw. Kept expecting it to die but it never did. Don’t know why I sold it but I did and ended up with a string of other saws mainly larger. 66 44 260 etc Always a problem with stihl saws. Usually carb or seal. Finally ended up going back to a single saw for everything and bought a 501sx. Perfect single saw set up. Little echo limbing saw was great too.
Western ky and it was 5 this morning. High of 14 today. Did get horizontal hustle saw fired up and heat cycles on it. Love the shindaiwa saws!! Stay warm. Oh posted crappy phone video of saw running.
Awesome scores👍🏻 don't think I've ever seen one in person. Totally understand not wanting to be out in the "cold". All in what one's used to. 15 is COLD here aswell, last week at 3F was holy s#!% cold to me🥶
Heyyy you got the same 680 as I do!! Cant wait. And if you find a intake throat thats still in production be sure to let me know!! I fixed the throat but its still a little meh but some newer echo throat might fit
I believe they take the exact same intake as the 550, 575, 577, 685, 695, and 757. And it is readily available with most any parts sources. I usually use either partstree.com or ereplacementparts.com.
@@novicelumberjackjust a heads up, partstree and ereplacement parts are the best place to get parts no longer available from the dealer. They purchase the NOS parts lots from dealers that close down so their stock of an old part that is NLA might be the only stock of that part.
A friend of mine had a 488 on a trash heap, I picked it out and did some repair, new chain ,bar and oil pump. It get so hot on the handle bar from muffler heat I cant cut more than 20-30 minutes, even using heavy gloves. i have tried to get the muffler off and open it up some but the heads on the bolts that hold it to the jug seem to be worn
My 680 is open port and has abysmal squish and you cant really lower the cylinder enough because it will start free porting. But that thumb screw idle is nice 👍👍 you got me all excited now and PLEASE PORT THAT THING!!😂
Those 680s are know for over heating and melting pistons due to the light weight and thin walled cylinders. Shindaiwa is a good brand of saw but thats one of their worst models. All that weight they shaved obviously came at a cost
I love Shindaiwa chainsaws. I currently have 3 of them. 2 488s and a 575. I kept one 488 bone stock but ported the other one. Man it's fun to run! It's my go to saw 99% of the time. I am always checking Ebay. I'll keep an eye open for a 680 cylinder for you.

Love the 488..it originally had that carb with one jet ..
I'm rebuilding a 695 and yes they r a open port and they just have different carbs on them I love those saws
"my Shindaiwa collection is complete" ...

I just got my 492 back from Super Dave, already had an echo 4910 but love the red saws so figured I’d grab one while there still around!

Nice score! Didn’t know a 680 existed.
Serious question. How do you remember all the different model numbers. ?
I've ran more ma machines in my time and couldnt recall any of the numbers.

Think it's time for a wood stove in the shop lol

I have replaced my worn out old Husky 262 XP with a Shindaiwa 488 and also have a 352s for limbing etc. Great saws !

Would explain why it's so hard to find a cylinder for one.
