  • Mart Smeets (NOS) interviews Bernie Ecclestone at the Grand Prix weekend in Zandvoort 1985. Bernie explains why 1985 will be the last F1 race at Zandvoort.
Mart Smeets shows a total lack of knowledge how things work in F1, also some of his questions are really small minded. This is however no surprise because the NOS always have been more interested in cycling, ice skating and football. They hardly paid any attention to autoracing.

This is priceless. When the reporter starts to talk about "This is Netherlands and we have our character..." and all that shit...and then Bernie delivered the "...you'r talking about we're Netherland and bla bla bla...but hotels have raised prices since last week to this week...". That was just brilliant. And Bernie always talks without raising his voice did you see?

Until I watched this, I was not a fan of Mr Ecclestone. I live in the town he came from but thought he was arrogant. Thank you for posting this as Bernie made a lot of sense whilst listening closely to the questions asked of him.

Bernie is a very very smart guy. He loves making deals and everyone who dealt with him says he is true to his words.

Well you can disagree with the journalist's line of questioning, but you can also question Ecclestone implying that races should essentially be bought by local (or national) authorities as has become so normal nowadays. Also a bit disingenuous by Ecclestone to suggest he cares about crowd numbers. He cares about the money. Nowadays they can go to Qatar and to many other places with zero people in the stands and F1 doesn't care whatsoever. Meanwhile a German GP could sell maybe 200.000 tickets and would still lose money if some local wouldn't pay up. I understand F1 is a business and that's exactly the problem. Too much business, too little sport.

Still, Bernie owned him and outsmarted him in this interview without even raising his voice. I think Mart Smeets was not used to a man as clever as Bernie.
