Angle grinders and Recip saws are notorious battery eaters. You can easily burn through a 3-5Ah battery in 5-20 minutes. You either need a pile of batteries,or get higher Ah ones for some specific tools.
I just bought a new Ryobi model PCL445B brushed angle grinder and I am running a 4amp hour battery that came with my dad’s hammer drill, and I got to say for grinding metal it works awesome with moderate pressure. Yes i can stop it if I push too hard but for what I do it works for me. I also love using it with a Milwaukee wire cup brush for removing rust, paint, or cleaning welds ext. It also seems to work pretty well if I use a really thin cutoff wheel and use medium pressure. After Watching your video I feel like your grinder has a little bit less power than my brushed grinder. Great video.
Couldn't agree more. But also as a welder by trade all cordless angle grinders are for me "light" duty, in their defense I'm usually abusing the cordless grinders so I haven't been able to cut the cord completely out just yet.
Just picked one of these up from Direct Tools Factory Outlet. Paid $80 for a factory blemished one. I can’t tell what the blemish is by looking at it. Used it to cut some bolts out of the concrete where I tore a wall out in the basement. I didn’t use the cutting disc that came in the box and I had a 4Ah HP battery. Cut through the lag bolts without a problem.
I had a Ryobi angle grinder back in 2013 and with the batteries available at the time you would get about 90 seconds under load. It was great for removing old padlocks and tidy ups on fences away from power but it was what it was. i now have a 9ah battery and am considering buying one of these. PS I have 11 year old Ryobi 1.5ah batteries that still run great in the smaller tools.
It’s good that you are letting people know to keep this in mind. I just read that this model has a higher rpm than DeWalt’s grinder so it obviously has a high current draw. Every negative review I saw was about the tool cutting out too soon and I wouldn’t be surprised if the majority of those people never considered that the tool was just too BadAss for their old battery packs. It’s a consumer brand battery-powered tool and most home gamers are not using it for long, demanding cuts. I’m very happy with mine 😎 and for big cuts I can just use my big n’ ugly 5P pack that I Frankensteined together from 5 recycled 2ah packs
I agree completely. I initially got into the 60v flexvolt line specifically for using an angle grinder. For a long time a refused to get a cordless angle grinder for this reason.
I have the older one plus brushless non hp slide switch. I use the 9ah batteries, which Ryobi doesn't make anymore. It's awesome! I thought I could do better, so I bought the Milwaukee Fuel paddle switch. I found no distinguishable difference. I use both if one gets hot. I use the other one.
We've had it's father, the P423 for ages and recommend it. We've got Makita and DeWalt corded 4" grinders, but were waiting for brushless before trying cordless. We saw bad ratings were from 2AH battery users, but 4AH folks saying "replace the battery and it rocks". It became our "go-to grinder for cutting, wire brushing, and grinding, saving brush wear on the others - LOL. It was flawless until it lost a phase, so we just rotate and click again - it's that good. Will try PBLAG01B next purchase, but the P423 isn't even leaving then. Usually have to keep guards in the shop, but it rotates very well. Btw, tuck in those hoodie strings! I love the new quick hub and if this fits our ham-fisted folks as well as our P423, it will get frequent use. We just keep rotating batteries and gettin' the work done.
I agree with you 100% on a corded grinder. I love my 6" Dewalt 60v cordless grinder... for small stuff, but I still have a corded counterpart for the bigger jobs.
Good battery pointers. In the current race to make larger and larger batteries I could definitely see somebody buying a tool, putting the old 2.0 AH they have on it and immediately thinking it’s trash. Was surprising that it barely ran with the small battery. On a side note have you used the Lenox metal cutoff blades? They cut fast and have very good life. They blade is metal with abrasive grit so they don’t get smaller as you cut either.
It seems for a battery operated grinder at this price point, it does well. Ryobi isn't priced to beat a DeWalt or Milwaukee on performance... seems like a good tool.
IMHO , each battery operated tool has a battery that is performs with the best. Angle grinders are definitely battery eaters , on my m18 fuel if I'm doing something serious I use the 8ah , 9ah or 12ah. On the other hand the m18 fuel impact driver works well with the old 2ah or new 3ah......it's up to the operator to make a educated decision on battery choice. Great vid brother
Agree, but you cannot imagine the comments we get on how crappy a tool is because someone uses the smallest battery made. It is not the fault of the user and it is not the fault of the tool. Someone has to educate the consumer as to what they need and many people will not pay for a large Ah battery! I would wager that 80 percent or higher of all Ryobi users have an older 4Ah as their largest battery.

Wish I would've done my research before hand. I only have the 4amp hour batteries. Bought this to strip paint from an aluminum boat. Figured out very quickly that was a mistake. Had to run out and get a corded version. At least it'll make a good cutoff tool 😂
Same motor in Milwaukee on non brushless saw ,i changed motor in my Ryobi saw with a "Milwaukee motor the motor was a identical china made 7500 series motor and i guess its the same for the brushless motors
I've been running the old (first green) 115mm grinder with the rotating battery for like 10 years now. 125mm disc fits it and also clears the guard...she's had a lot of hot suppers and still going strong.
The Milwaukee 2980-20 and the 2785-20 do not have that side style push button guard these are the 2 grinders i have from Milwaukee this ryobi guard reminds me of the dewalt 60v flexvolt grinder that I have @WorkshopAddict
Very good video. I already own the last version of this one. I do very little cutting. especially rusted bolts in cars (suspension), and is good for that. But I am planning to go beyond that doing some metal working as DIYer. Which corded Angle grinder would you recommend me??? Thanks in advance and keep the good work.
This Ryobi is coming out in Feb 21. As for corded, which is what you want for more metal working, look at the Dewalt line. They have some nice smaller units that really have great power!

I love Ryobi tools. But you have to keep your expectations realistic with these tools. There not pro level tools. I think their excellent dyi or if you needed something in a pinch on the pro level it would work but that's not their main role and it wouldn't make sense for TTI to do that.
dj jd Dewalt forced me to switch from 18 to 20v 2 weeks ago. Those tools got used very Hard for 14yrs I shopped hard for 12 new 20v tools for 1200 bucks. Dewalt wants $300 for the trim gun! Bought Ryobi yesterday for 99 bucks!! Works great 18v Dewalt lasted 15yrs with every day use. Ryobi last me 2yrs per tool. I expect my new Dewalt tools to last 2.5years?? I bought a Makita saw in 1985 for $90, replaced it in 2020 for $99, new!

The Ryobi just by it's very nature of cost vs company profits is going to do the same job almost as well as the Dewalt but its simply not going to last as long being used day in and day out. Just as a company tier system TTI spends its money in Milwaukee. I've often said that you could build a house with Ryobi. But in that I said a house. With Dewalt or Makita you could build houses. Depending on the work, I would agree. There are some cases where cordless absolutely rocks and I would not trade them for the world, but in others, you need a cord.

I get that. The initial cut outs had me a bit annoyed, but realistically, this tool needs larger Ah batteries and does fine with a 9AH. It is not Milwaukee quality, but pretty good for a Ryobi.

If you need to cut or grind in a remote location such as in a field or a lot with no power outlet, cordless grinders are great, otherwise go corded.

I have a Dewalt Brushless AC Corded grinder and it is a beast! Dewalt is nailing it with most of their grinders.

I like the weight of the tool. Even with a 2Ahr battery, it has plenty of power to clean wires and junk between floor joists doing basement reno's
Love mine.....you go threw alot of grinding disks plunge cutting rather then scoring it across and of course no cut-outs as a result.
This is one of the tools ryobi needs to work on. Don’t have none of these problems with my Kobalt frinder

I have been using the 115mm brushed version for years ,can't kill it ,imo there is no need to go brushless.

I got the batt drive simply because there aren't electrical sources at the barn I board at.
I love mine and I'm waiting for the new 12 AH battery to hit the Home Depot shelf or online.

If that is under 1500 watts out, then I wouldn't recommend it. I need higher power for the type of my hobby work.
